Launched in April 2023, Juice is expected to reach Jupiter in July 2031. As of 3 October 2026, it is still en route; its close investigations of the moons are planned for the future, and its goal is to assess environments relevant to habitability, not to claim it has found life.
What will Juice investigate?
Juice is designed to answer two connected questions: what are Jupiter’s ocean worlds like, and could the Jupiter system support—or have supported—life? The mission will examine the moons’ ice and possible subsurface oceans, their geology and interiors, and the way they interact with Jupiter. It will also study Jupiter itself: its atmosphere, weather and climate, upper atmosphere, magnetic environment and rings.

These are investigations of conditions and possible habitats. An ocean or a potentially habitable environment is not evidence of life, and Juice is not a life-detection mission.

How will the spacecraft gather evidence?
Juice carries ten dedicated science instruments, grouped by ESA into three broad types. Together, they observe from a distance, probe the moons’ physical structure and measure conditions around the spacecraft.

Remote sensing: images, spectra and atmospheric observations
Remote-sensing instruments observe Jupiter and its moons across wavelengths from ultraviolet to sub-millimetre. JANUS, the optical camera system, is specified to reach up to 2.4 m resolution on Ganymede and about 10 km at Jupiter. These are instrument capabilities, not a guarantee that every observation will achieve that resolution. MAJIS will study Jupiter’s clouds and atmospheric constituents, as well as ices and minerals on the moons. UVS examines ultraviolet emissions, exospheres, aurorae and the upper atmosphere; SWI studies temperature, composition and dynamics.
Geophysical measurements: radar, topography and gravity
RIME is an ice-penetrating radar intended to sound the icy moons’ subsurface to around nine kilometres. That figure describes the instrument’s intended sounding capability, not the depth it will necessarily reach everywhere or in every set of conditions. GALA measures surface topography and Ganymede’s tidal deformation. The 3GM radio-science instrument contributes measurements of gravity and geophysics, and studies neutral atmospheres and ionospheres.
In-situ measurements: the environment around Juice
J-MAG, PEP and RPWI investigate magnetic fields, particles, radio emissions and plasma. These measurements help show how each moon interacts with Jupiter’s powerful magnetic and plasma environment. RADEM monitors radiation. PRIDE combines Juice’s communications signal with radio telescopes on Earth to determine the spacecraft’s position and velocity precisely.
The spacecraft’s cross-shaped solar arrays total 85 m². Its 16 m deployable RIME antenna and 10.6 m magnetometer boom extend key observing hardware away from the spacecraft body.

Why are Ganymede, Europa and Callisto being compared?
All three moons are thought to have subsurface oceans, but they differ in surface history, geological activity and their relationship with Jupiter. Comparing them can help scientists test how ice shells and interiors vary, how materials move between interior, surface and space, and what those differences mean for the evolution and potential habitability of the Jovian system.
| Moon | Planned encounters | What Juice will investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Ganymede | Five flybys in 2031–2032, followed by entry into orbit in late 2034; mission end is planned for 2035. | Its subsurface ocean and ice shell, geological record, magnetic field and dynamo, and interactions with Jupiter. |
| Europa | Two flybys in July 2032, with a planned closest approach of about 400 km. | Surface chemistry and geological activity, possible shallow water, ice-shell structure, and exchanges between the subsurface, surface and space. Possible water-vapour plumes are a subject of investigation, not a confirmed Juice discovery. |
| Callisto | Twenty-one flybys planned between 2032 and 2034, with a planned closest approach of about 200 km. | Its ancient, heavily cratered surface, shell and possible ocean, interior and gravity, surface chemistry, and signs of past activity. |
Why is Ganymede the main target?
Ganymede is Juice’s primary scientific target and the destination for its concluding orbital tour. Its ocean, ice shell, geological record and unusual magnetic field give the mission a chance to study a moon as a world in its own right, while also measuring how it responds to Jupiter’s environment. The planned sequence begins with five flybys to shape the Jupiter tour; in late 2034, Juice is scheduled to transfer into orbit around Ganymede.

It was a decent lesson representing the Solar system for a young child. Perfect for handmade craft, DIY decoration, school project, science projects and more.
Europa and Callisto provide important contrasts rather than substitutes. Europa offers a chance to investigate a geologically active surface and possible exchanges with the interior. Callisto’s ancient, cratered terrain preserves a different record of the system’s history. Studying all three lets scientists place Ganymede’s results in a broader context.
What is Juice’s route to Jupiter?
Juice launched on 14 April 2023 from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5. Its planned route uses gravity assists to change the spacecraft’s trajectory and build the speed needed for the Jupiter journey.

On 28 September 2026, Juice passed 8,640 km above the Indian Ocean at closest approach. ESA reported that the encounter increased its velocity by 3.5 km/s and deflected its path by 20° from its pre-flyby trajectory, improving the route to Jupiter. The flyby also gave instrument teams a chance to calibrate instruments using Earth, the Moon and Earth’s magnetotail. Those calibration observations were not the mission’s planned close-up science of Jupiter’s moons.
Juice Spacecraft Operations Manager Angela Dietz said the navigation required “ultra-precise navigation in real time” and that the team used only a small amount of the propellant reserved for the flyby, leaving more for observations at Jupiter. ESA lists a nominal science lifetime of four years; that is the planned science duration, not a guarantee of how long the spacecraft will operate.
What will Juice’s Jupiter observations add?
The moons do not exist in isolation. Jupiter’s atmosphere, magnetic field and plasma shape the environment around them, while the moons in turn interact with the planet’s system. By studying the planet alongside its satellites, Juice can interpret measurements of particles, fields, aurorae and surface or atmospheric material in context. Jupiter also serves as an archetype for gas giants elsewhere, making the mission relevant to understanding giant-planet systems beyond our own.
What Juice has—and has not—found so far
At the 3 October 2026 status point, Juice had not yet begun its close Jupiter-moon investigations. Its launch, gravity-assist encounters and instrument calibration are steps on the way to the science phase, not evidence that it has discovered oceans, life or active plumes. Those remain questions the planned observations are meant to investigate.
