There is no reliable one-size-fits-all backup-power number for an AI data center. Estimate it by defining which equipment must stay powered, totaling its peak demand and planned growth, and checking that the UPS, generator, and distribution paths can carry the load through the outages and maintenance events the site is designed to survive. Keep the UPS-protected load separate from the larger emergency-power load: cooling and other facility systems belong in generator sizing only when they are inside the emergency-power boundary.
First decide what your estimate includes
“Backup power” can mean several different loads. Write down which one you are estimating before you total anything; otherwise, a UPS figure, a generator figure, and a whole-facility figure can be mistaken for one another.

- UPS-protected load: the equipment that must ride through an interruption or transfer event. This may be a selected portion of IT equipment rather than every server and facility system.
- Generator-backed emergency load: the equipment that must operate while the site is on generator power. Depending on the design, this can include UPS systems, cooling, controls, lighting, and other auxiliaries.
- Total facility electrical capacity: the broader site requirement, which may include IT, cooling, lighting, and backup equipment. Schneider Electric’s data-center power-sizing material treats these as elements of total electrical capacity; that total is not automatically the UPS load.
Make a load list for each boundary. If cooling is necessary to keep the protected IT running during an outage, include the required cooling equipment in the emergency-power calculation. Do not automatically multiply protected IT load by PUE to estimate a UPS that only supports selected IT loads.

Build a peak-load estimate for the planned deployment
Use the actual equipment configuration
List the GPU servers, network equipment, storage, and other devices in the planned deployment, using their manufacturer specifications and the intended rack configuration. Estimate their concurrent peak demand, not just a snapshot of average utilization. Include the deployment phase being designed and a documented growth allowance so the estimate does not silently assume either today’s smaller build or the eventual maximum build.

Keep the assumptions visible: equipment count, configuration, peak demand basis, and which loads are included. A GPU rack’s power-input arrangement is specific to that system and cannot serve as a generic AI-data-center sizing rule.
Account for cooling and auxiliaries only at the right boundary
Separately identify the mechanical and auxiliary equipment required in the emergency operating mode: for example, the cooling equipment the design requires, controls, and other facility loads. Use the actual equipment and operating requirements rather than adding an arbitrary percentage to IT demand. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 Best Practices Guide for Energy-Efficient Data Center Design recommends evaluating which equipment requires UPS service and considering initial, future, and part-load conditions.

Keep power measures distinct
Record real power in kW and apparent power in kVA where the equipment specifications or design require both. They are not interchangeable: power factor and the equipment’s limits affect the capacity a circuit or source must provide. Check phase balance and manufacturer limits as well as the summed load; a total that appears adequate can still conceal an overloaded phase or path.

UPS: identify the load to bridge
Use the protected-load list to establish the UPS output requirement, then account for the selected UPS topology, its efficiency, operating load, and the manufacturer’s limits. The required battery capacity and ride-through duration cannot be inferred from IT kW alone: the project must specify the interruption or transfer events the UPS must bridge and the required autonomy.

UPS efficiency and loading vary with the system and operating condition. The DOE guide reports that, among double-conversion systems—the most commonly used data-center system—efficiency improved from 85% to 90% in the 1990s to 95% or higher in 2023. That is a guide-level historical/current comparison, not a performance guarantee for a particular UPS. The guide also gives an illustrative 100-kW-load case: a 10-percentage-point increase in UPS load factor and a 1.2% efficiency increase can result in approximately 13,000 kWh of annual savings. Treat that as the stated scenario, not a universal savings forecast.
Generator: total the emergency boundary
Build the generator load from the equipment that must operate on emergency power, including the UPS input and required cooling or auxiliaries when those loads are within the boundary. Apply the site’s actual transfer sequence, source topology, equipment ratings, and load behavior. The cited guidance does not establish a universal generator multiplier, transfer time, runtime target, or margin, so a generic percentage cannot substitute for an equipment-based design.

Generator capacity is not just a matter of adding steady-state kW figures. The design must verify the conditions that govern the actual equipment and transfer sequence, including kVA, power factor, phase balance, and the load each source must accept. Required generator count and fuel autonomy also depend on project-specific requirements not supplied by an IT-load total.

Test the design against failures and maintenance
State which event the design must tolerate: a component fault, planned maintenance, or loss of an upstream power path. Trace the route from utility and generator through switchgear, UPS, floor distribution, and rack distribution. Mark where nominally separate feeds meet a shared UPS or other common point, then calculate the load each surviving path must carry in the event being tested.

NVIDIA’s DGX H100 electrical specification illustrates why path tracing matters. For that specified system, each of three required rack power-input paths must support half of expected rack peak power. NVIDIA also describes a typical N+1 arrangement in which two of three rack paths can converge at an upstream UPS, leaving a shared failure point; its enhanced N+1 design uses three discrete UPS paths. These are details of the cited DGX H100 design, not rules for all AI racks.
Redundancy labels alone do not prove that a workload will remain available. NVIDIA’s specification warns that a failure of one system in a multi-node AI workload can stop the job across the systems, and identifies checkpoint recovery as an availability consideration. The facility design and the workload’s recovery plan therefore address related but different risks.

Caterpillar’s 2017 design overview discusses 2N, 3M2, and N+1 arrangements as topology choices with trade-offs. Use topology descriptions as a starting point, not as proof of a particular site’s capacity or current equipment performance; check the selected equipment and all shared paths in the project design.
Use a practical estimate worksheet
- Set the design case. Record the deployment phase, equipment population, peak demand, and growth allowance.
- Draw two load boundaries. Mark equipment that must ride through the interruption on UPS, then mark all loads that must run on emergency generation.
- Enter equipment-level demand. Use manufacturer data for the actual GPU-server, network, storage, cooling, and auxiliary configuration; record kW, kVA, power factor, and relevant phase information where specified.
- Choose the outage cases. List the component fault, maintenance event, or upstream-path loss the design is required to survive.
- Trace and test each path. Check the load and equipment limits on every surviving circuit and upstream junction, including shared points and the transfer sequence.
- Review staged operation. Check UPS loading and efficiency during early deployment as well as at planned growth stages.
- Have the facility design verified. A qualified electrical/facilities design professional should validate the equipment ratings, supplied kVA, failover conditions, and rack power paths before deployment. NVIDIA specifically calls for qualified facilities verification and testing of the rack paths for the cited DGX H100 design.
What an estimate cannot establish by itself
A planning estimate based on this method is not a facility design, compliance determination, or trustworthy kW/kVA recommendation. Without the project’s IT load, cooling duty, autonomy requirement, jurisdiction, fuel plan, generator step-load data, and selected redundancy tier, it cannot establish generator count, battery capacity, or required runtime. The ASHRAE AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework identifies resilience as a design topic and points to related NEMA publications for UPS, switchgear, and energy storage; the applicable project requirements still need to be established and reviewed by qualified professionals.
