On iOS 27, “recovery restore screen” can mean one of two things. The newer on-device Recovery prompt is reached by powering the iPhone off, disconnecting it from power, and pressing and holding the side button until the recovery prompt appears. The older recovery mode, which shows a Connect to computer screen, requires a USB cable, Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on a PC, and a button sequence that depends on your iPhone model. Identify which screen you are seeing or trying to reach before you start, because the steps are different.

Enter the on-device Recovery screen on iOS 27
Apple describes iOS Recovery as a guided, on-device option for repairing an iPhone. Use these steps for manual entry:

- Power the iPhone off.
- Disconnect the iPhone from any power source, including the charging cable.
- Press and hold the side button until the “Press and hold to recover” screen appears.

Enter computer-based recovery mode
Use this method when you need the Connect to computer screen, for example to update or restore with a computer. Apple says to keep the iPhone connected to the computer by USB for the whole process and to use an up-to-date Mac or the latest Apple Devices app on a PC.

What you need
- A USB cable that is compatible with your iPhone and computer
- A Mac with Finder, or a PC with the latest Apple Devices app
- Enough time to finish the process without interrupting the connection
Button sequence by iPhone model

Steps
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with the USB cable.
- Open Finder on a Mac, or the Apple Devices app on a PC.
- Follow the button sequence for your model in the table above.
- Keep holding the buttons until the Connect to computer screen appears on the iPhone.
- When the computer offers Update or Restore, follow the next section before choosing.
Choose Update or Restore
If the computer offers Update or Restore and you have not yet tried Update, Apple says to try updating first. The two options behave differently:

If a software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPhone exits the Connect to computer screen, let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode steps.

Recovery Assistant
Apple’s Recovery Assistant can address startup problems by downloading a software package. If the problem continues on the latest iOS, Apple directs users to recovery mode.

Restore with a nearby Apple device
Apple documents a nearby-device restore for certain supported models when a specific restore animation appears on the iPhone. It requires an unlocked nearby Apple device connected to Wi-Fi. Eligibility depends on the iPhone model, and this method is not a general replacement for the cable-based steps above.

When recovery does not work
- If the Connect to computer screen or the Restore screen does not change after the steps above, Apple says service may be needed.
- If a button is broken or stuck, a cable, app or computer cannot repair it. Contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider.
- If the computer process fails, the iPhone exits recovery mode unexpectedly, and the download keeps stopping, retry with a different cable or USB port and confirm that Finder or Apple Devices is up to date before escalating to service.
