For whole-cluster protection on Ubuntu, encrypt the storage that contains PostgreSQL with Linux dm-crypt and LUKS. Unlock and mount that volume before PostgreSQL starts, and include WAL, tablespaces, replicas, snapshots and backups in the same protection plan. Use PostgreSQL’s pgcrypto module only when selected columns or values need to remain encrypted after the database is online; it is not a replacement for volume encryption.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
LUKS protects a locked or removed disk. It does not hide data from an attacker who has access to a running, mounted system. Key custody, boot behavior, backup handling and recovery testing are therefore part of the encryption design, not optional follow-up tasks.

The right architecture for PostgreSQL at rest on Ubuntu
PostgreSQL stores a cluster as ordinary files: relation data, indexes, free-space maps, visibility maps, transaction metadata, write-ahead logs and control files. If those files sit on an unencrypted filesystem, a person who obtains the disk, a machine, a snapshot or an exported backup may be able to read them without starting PostgreSQL.
The usual Ubuntu design is to put the filesystem containing the cluster on a LUKS container backed by Linux dm-crypt. Ubuntu describes full-disk encryption as ensuring that data on a disk or selected partitions is encrypted at rest, and identifies LUKS as its block-level encryption framework. PostgreSQL’s own encryption-options documentation lists “dm-crypt + LUKS on Linux” as the block-level or full-disk option for preventing data disclosure after a drive or computer is stolen.

The operating sequence is deliberately simple:
- The machine boots far enough to make the encrypted block device available.
- An authorized operator, an approved TPM-backed policy or another documented mechanism unlocks the LUKS mapping.
- Ubuntu mounts the filesystem at the path PostgreSQL expects.
- Ownership, permissions and mandatory-access-control rules are checked.
- Only then does the PostgreSQL service start.
That arrangement encrypts the cluster while the device is locked. Once the volume is unlocked and mounted, the operating system presents PostgreSQL with plaintext files, as it must for normal database operation.
What “at rest” covers—and what it does not
Protected when the device is locked
LUKS is designed for disclosure from lost, stolen or decommissioned storage. Someone who removes the drive, copies raw blocks or obtains a powered-off computer should not be able to interpret the PostgreSQL files without an unlock credential and the corresponding LUKS metadata.

Not protected on a running, mounted host
PostgreSQL documents the boundary clearly: “This does not protect against attacks while the file system is mounted, because when mounted, the operating system provides an unencrypted view of the data.” A malicious process with sufficient host privileges, a compromised administrator account, or an attacker who has already bypassed database authorization can still access plaintext through the running system.
What must be included in scope
Decide whether your requirement covers only the primary data directory or every copy and derivative. A complete inventory commonly includes:
- The active PostgreSQL
data_directory. - Tablespaces stored outside the main directory.
- WAL files, including an external WAL archive.
- Logical dumps, physical base backups and backup catalogs.
- Read replicas and standby servers.
- Cloud snapshots, image templates and volume clones.
- Temporary staging directories used during export, restore or maintenance.
Encrypting only the primary directory leaves an unencrypted dump, snapshot or replica as an alternate path to the same information.
LUKS, pgcrypto or both?
The two technologies operate at different layers. LUKS encrypts blocks below the filesystem. pgcrypto encrypts values inside SQL expressions. They can be deployed together, but they solve different problems.

| Plaintext availability | Filesystem contents are readable after unlock and mount | Plaintext exists while queries, functions or applications decrypt values | Plaintext still exists during normal processing on the running host |

| Primary failure mode | Cannot start or recover if the volume cannot be unlocked or mounted | Lost key makes encrypted values unusable; incorrect handling can expose keys | Either failure can interrupt service or data access |
Choose LUKS when the requirement is “a stolen server or drive must not reveal the cluster.” Add pgcrypto when a particular field—such as a regulated identifier—must remain ciphertext in the database even after the volume has been unlocked. Do not describe pgcrypto as full-disk encryption.
Inventory PostgreSQL’s real storage paths first
Do not format or move a volume until you know exactly where the cluster and its supporting files reside. Run read-only inventory checks as an administrator and as the PostgreSQL service account.

- Find the active data directory. Connect with a role that can inspect server settings and run

pg_tablespaceand inspect each location. A tablespace can place relation files on a different filesystem from the main data directory. - Confirm WAL placement. Check whether WAL is inside the cluster or redirected through a supported external arrangement. Include archive destinations in the encryption scope.
- Inspect the host filesystem. Use commands such as
findmntandlsblk -fto map each path to a filesystem, logical volume and block device. A directory name alone does not tell you which device stores it. - Locate backups and exports. Document the destination of physical backups, logical dumps, WAL archives, temporary restore space and automated snapshots.
- Record service dependencies. Note the systemd unit, mount point and any cloud-init or orchestration step that currently starts PostgreSQL.
Save this inventory as part of the change record. It is the reference used to verify that no unencrypted copy remains after migration.
Plan the change for a new host or an existing cluster
Fresh Ubuntu installation
For a new server, create the encrypted storage during installation or with Ubuntu’s supported storage tooling, then initialize PostgreSQL directly on the mounted path. This avoids copying a live cluster and makes it easier to ensure that the first database files are created inside the encrypted filesystem.
Existing single server
An existing cluster needs a migration plan. A filesystem cannot safely be reformatted underneath a running PostgreSQL instance. Schedule downtime and use a verified backup-and-restore or a replication-based move to the new encrypted volume. Keep the original copy untouched until the new cluster has passed consistency and application checks.
Existing production service with a standby
A standby can reduce downtime, but it does not remove the need for a tested rollback. Provision encrypted storage on the replacement or standby host, copy or replicate the cluster using your established PostgreSQL procedure, stop writes at the cutover point, verify the promoted node, and retain a recoverable copy of the previous state until the retention policy permits deletion.
Cloud virtual machines
Determine which layer owns encryption: guest LUKS, the provider’s volume encryption, or both. Provider-side encryption may address a different trust boundary than guest-controlled keys. If the requirement is that your organization controls the unlock key inside the guest, document why guest LUKS is still required. Treat provider snapshots and machine images as separate storage objects that need their own encryption and access policy.
Prepare and mount the LUKS-backed filesystem
The exact partitioning and service-order commands vary by Ubuntu release, installation method and whether the disk is new. The safe sequence is consistent, however.
Recommended Free Tools
- Back up and verify restoration. Before changing storage, create a backup whose contents can be restored on a separate test system. Record the backup’s encryption status and key location.
- Create the container on the intended device. Use Ubuntu’s supported LUKS/dm-crypt tooling. Double-check the device identifier: initializing the wrong block device destroys its existing contents.
- Create a filesystem inside the unlocked mapping. Choose a filesystem and mount point appropriate for PostgreSQL and your operational standards. Do not place only part of a cluster on the encrypted path unless every remaining path has an intentional protection design.
- Use stable identification. Configure the mapping and filesystem with stable identifiers rather than assuming a device name such as
/dev/sdbwill remain unchanged after reboot. - Make the mount available before PostgreSQL. The PostgreSQL service must depend on the mount. A successful boot with the encrypted device still closed must not result in PostgreSQL creating a new, empty cluster on an ordinary directory.
- Set ownership and permissions. The PostgreSQL service account must own the cluster path and be able to traverse every parent directory. Keep permissions no broader than the existing secure configuration.
- Preserve security policy. Recheck AppArmor or SELinux rules where enabled, and update path-specific policies if the cluster moved. A correct Unix owner is not sufficient when mandatory access controls deny the new location.
- Validate before cutover. Open the mapping, mount it, confirm the expected PostgreSQL files are present, and start the cluster only after the mount dependency is proven.
Never use an interactive unlock step as an undocumented workaround. If a human must enter a passphrase at boot, document who is responsible and what happens after an unattended restart. If boot is automated, document the trust assumptions and recovery path.
Move or initialize the PostgreSQL cluster safely
Initialize a new cluster
Install the PostgreSQL packages, unlock and mount the LUKS filesystem, then initialize the cluster in that mounted location using the Ubuntu packaging and PostgreSQL version you support. Verify that the service reports the intended data_directory and that no database files were created on the unencrypted root filesystem.

Restore an existing cluster
For a logical migration, restore the dump into a cluster initialized on the encrypted filesystem, then compare roles, extensions, ownership, privileges, row counts where appropriate and application-level checksums. For a physical migration, use PostgreSQL’s supported base-backup or replication process and preserve the source version and configuration requirements.
Handle tablespaces and links
Tablespaces may be represented by directories or symbolic links beneath the cluster. Recreate the target directories on encrypted filesystems, preserve the PostgreSQL service account’s access, and verify each tablespace after startup. A cluster is not fully protected if its main directory is encrypted but a tablespace remains on an unencrypted disk.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Retire the old copy
Do not delete the old data until the encrypted cluster has started successfully, applications have completed functional checks, backups have run from the new location and rollback requirements have been met. When the old device is decommissioned, follow your organization’s secure-erasure process; encryption alone does not prove that an already-unencrypted historical copy was destroyed.
Choose an unlock and key-management model
Ubuntu documents passphrase-based unlocking and TPM-backed paths, including Clevis integration. LUKS derives a key-encryption key from the passphrase and stores the encrypted volume key in the LUKS header. Ubuntu identifies PBKDF2 with LUKS1 and Argon2 with LUKS2.
| Model | Strengths | Costs and failure concerns | Questions to document |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator-entered passphrase | Simple mental model; no automatic boot dependency on a TPM | Requires an authorized person after reboot; unattended recovery and remote restarts are harder | Who enters it, where is the emergency credential, and how is access audited? |
| TPM-assisted unlock with Clevis or an equivalent policy | Can unlock automatically when the machine satisfies the enrolled trust conditions | Depends on TPM availability, enrollment, measured-boot state and recovery procedures | What happens after a motherboard, firmware or boot-chain change? Where is the recovery key? |
| Operationally managed alternative | Can fit an organization’s existing key service or remote-unlock process | Adds network, service-availability and authorization dependencies | Can the host boot during an outage, and who can revoke or rotate credentials? |
Keep an offline recovery method separate from the server. Restrict access to recovery material, record rotation and revocation procedures, and test them. A key that exists only on the encrypted host is not a recovery plan. Conversely, placing an unlock secret in an unprotected startup script defeats the intended threat model.
Use pgcrypto for selected fields, with clear limits
The pgcrypto extension provides hashing, password hashing, PGP encryption and raw encryption functions. PostgreSQL requires OpenSSL support for the module. It is appropriate when the application needs ciphertext for particular values rather than for every database block.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A typical design stores ciphertext in a dedicated column and has the application supply a key through a controlled key-management process. The application decrypts only when it has a legitimate business reason, and queries that do not need the plaintext operate on the ciphertext or on a separate non-sensitive representation.
Before enabling this pattern, decide how key rotation works, how old ciphertext is re-encrypted, how searches and indexes operate, how nulls and encoding are handled, and what happens when a key is revoked. Deterministic encryption can reveal equality patterns; randomized encryption improves that leakage profile but makes exact-match queries more complicated. Do not invent a key in SQL source code or commit it to a migration file.

PostgreSQL cautions that “All pgcrypto functions run inside the database server.” Data and passwords therefore move between the client and the server in clear text unless the connection is protected. The documentation recommends local connections or SSL and says to trust the system and database administrators; if that trust is not acceptable, perform cryptography in the client application instead.
Even when a column is encrypted with pgcrypto, decrypted values and keys can exist in server memory during processing. Host hardening, least-privilege roles, protected client connections and careful logging remain necessary.

Protect backups, replicas and snapshots separately
Volume encryption on the primary host does not automatically encrypt data after it leaves that volume. Apply an explicit policy to each copy:
- Physical backups: encrypt the backup repository and restrict restore credentials.
- Logical dumps: write them only to encrypted destinations and remove temporary plaintext files after a verified transfer.
- WAL archives: protect the archive location and the credentials used to upload or retrieve segments.
- Replicas: provision encrypted storage on each standby; replication traffic still needs transport protection and authentication.
- Snapshots and images: control who can create, copy and restore them, and verify the encryption policy of every resulting object.
- Restore workspaces: encrypt the temporary filesystem used during recovery, not only the long-term backup bucket.
Document retention and deletion as part of the design. An expired encrypted backup may still be recoverable by someone who has the key; an unencrypted export can bypass every control on the primary server.
What LUKS does not replace on a running server
After unlock, use normal PostgreSQL and Ubuntu security controls:
- Separate login roles and grant only the privileges each application needs.
- Require strong authentication and protect client connections with TLS where traffic crosses a trust boundary.
- Patch the operating system, PostgreSQL and extensions through a controlled maintenance process.
- Restrict shell and sudo access, and monitor privileged actions.
- Protect configuration files, service credentials, logs and connection-pool secrets.
- Monitor failed unlocks, unexpected mounts, database access and backup downloads.
- Keep the database host isolated from unnecessary services and administration paths.
These controls address attacks against a live system. They are complementary to, not substitutes for, encrypting the storage itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRecovery and validation tests you should run
Encryption is not complete when the first mount succeeds. Test the entire lifecycle in a non-production environment and repeat the tests after major boot, kernel, firmware or PostgreSQL changes.
- Locked-device test: shut down cleanly and confirm that the encrypted mapping is closed. Verify that the raw device does not expose readable PostgreSQL files.
- Normal boot test: unlock through the documented method, confirm the filesystem is mounted at the expected path, and verify that PostgreSQL starts only afterward.
- Failed-unlock test: enter an invalid credential or simulate an unavailable TPM policy. Confirm that PostgreSQL does not start against an empty or fallback directory.
- Permission test: verify that the PostgreSQL account can read and write required files while unrelated users cannot.
- Backup test: create a backup, inspect its destination’s encryption and access policy, and restore it to another encrypted test environment.
- Replica test: restart a standby and verify that its storage remains protected and that replication resumes only after the volume is available.
- Recovery-key test: use the offline recovery procedure, record the time and approvals required, then rotate or revoke the tested credential according to policy.
- Application test: run reads, writes, migrations, scheduled jobs and maintenance tasks against the encrypted cluster, including tablespace and WAL operations.
Record expected mount paths, service dependencies, owners, recovery contacts and the exact point at which an operator should stop rather than allow PostgreSQL to start.

Performance and hardware decisions
The authoritative Ubuntu and PostgreSQL material for this setup does not publish a universal throughput penalty, latency figure or hardware recommendation. Encryption overhead depends on CPU instructions, storage speed, filesystem behavior, workload, PostgreSQL version, concurrency and the amount of data actually read or written. Measure your own workload rather than applying a percentage from another server.
Benchmark before and after encryption with representative queries, checkpoint behavior, WAL generation, backup throughput and crash-recovery time. Test the busiest and most failure-sensitive operations, not only a synthetic sequential read. A TPM may change boot automation and recovery operations, but its presence does not by itself determine database query performance.
Common failure modes and fixes
PostgreSQL starts before the encrypted mount
Symptom: the service fails, or worse, creates a new cluster in the ordinary mount-point directory. Fix: stop PostgreSQL, do not write new data there, confirm the LUKS mapping and filesystem are mounted, restore the intended cluster path and enforce a service dependency on the mount before restarting.
The volume unlocks but PostgreSQL reports permission errors
Symptom: the service account cannot traverse the path or open relation files. Fix: check ownership and mode bits on every parent directory, then check AppArmor or SELinux policy for the new location. Avoid solving the problem by making the directory world-readable.
A tablespace or WAL path remains unencrypted
Symptom: the main directory is on LUKS but a separate device, archive or tablespace is not. Fix: repeat the storage inventory, move the overlooked path to protected storage, and update backup and monitoring configuration.
Remote reboot leaves the service down
Symptom: the host is reachable but PostgreSQL cannot start because no one unlocked the volume. Fix: choose an intentional passphrase-entry process, a TPM-backed policy with recovery keys, or another approved remote-unlock design. Do not leave a plaintext key in an ad hoc script.
A TPM change prevents automatic unlocking
Symptom: firmware, bootloader or motherboard maintenance causes the enrolled policy to reject the machine. Fix: use the documented recovery key, repair or re-enroll the policy under change control, and verify that automatic and emergency paths both work before returning the host to service.
An encrypted dump cannot be restored
Symptom: the backup exists but the key, permissions or extension setup is missing. Fix: keep backup encryption keys and PostgreSQL restore metadata in separate, controlled systems; test restoration regularly rather than discovering the dependency during an outage.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the requirement protection from a stolen, powered-off disk or server? Use LUKS/dm-crypt for the storage containing the cluster.
- Must selected values remain ciphertext while the database is online? Add
pgcryptoor perform encryption in the client application, with a managed key lifecycle. - Are WAL, tablespaces, replicas, snapshots, dumps and restore workspaces included? If not, the design is incomplete.
- Can an authorized person or an approved automated policy unlock the volume after reboot?
- Is there an offline recovery method for lost passphrases, TPM failure or hardware replacement?
- Will PostgreSQL be prevented from starting before the encrypted filesystem is mounted?
- Have backup restore, failed unlock and rollback procedures been exercised?
- Are running-host threats addressed separately through authentication, authorization, TLS, patching, least privilege and monitoring?
The resulting design is layered: LUKS protects the storage medium while it is locked, PostgreSQL and operating-system controls protect the running service, and pgcrypto or client-side cryptography protects selected values when their ciphertext must persist after unlock. No single layer covers all of those states.
