Type a web address you already know, open an app you installed from a trusted source, or confirm details against genuine product packaging or a manual. Do not treat a search ranking, logo, caller ID, or an unexpected message as proof that a contact is real.
This guide explains how to find an authentic support channel, what to check before signing in or sharing information, how to handle suspicious texts and emails, and what to do if you already paid or disclosed details. The recommendations are general U.S. consumer guidance; the official route, consumer agencies, and available channels vary by company and country.

Use this safety rule first
End any contact attempt that asks for your account password, gift cards, a wire transfer, or remote access to your computer. Then start again through a website address or app that you reached independently. The person contacting you may use the company name, logo, phone number, or a convincing support script, but those details can be copied or spoofed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Reach the company independently: type a known address, open an already-installed app, or check printed product material.
- Check the destination: inspect the complete domain before signing in or submitting account, payment, or personal information.
- Corroborate when possible: compare a manual or package contact detail with the company’s own site.
- Reject unusual demands: never send gift cards or wire money, disclose a password, or grant remote computer access as a condition of support.
- Use another route when a message feels wrong: ignore its link and number, and ask the company through a trusted channel whether the message is genuine.
Start from a route you chose, not one an unknown sender supplied
Type a web address you already trust
If you have used the company before, enter its address yourself or use a bookmark you created during a prior legitimate visit. On the site, look for labels such as Help, Support, Contact, or Account. Follow the route shown on that site rather than relying on a phone number or sign-in link in an email.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers have created fake customer-service information and paid to place it in search results. A result at the top of a page is therefore a lead to inspect, not an identity check. The FTC’s instruction is simple: “Visit the company’s official website for contact information.”
Open an app you already installed
When the company provides an app, open the copy already on your device and use its built-in help or support area. Do not install an app merely because an unexpected message tells you to do so, and do not assume that every company has an official app. An app is useful only when you obtained it through a trusted process and can identify the company behind it.
Use printed material as a second check
A product package, warranty card, manual, or other printed material may contain legitimate customer-service details. Compare that information with the contact page reached from the company’s own website. A match across independent materials is stronger than a number supplied by an unknown caller, but continue to verify the web domain before entering account details.

Inspect the full domain, not just the page design
Look at the address bar and read the complete web address. A familiar logo, colors, or wording can be copied onto a fake page. Pay attention to the registered company name in the domain, unexpected words, misspellings, extra punctuation, and a different domain ending. A page that looks professional is not enough; the address must make sense for the company you intended to reach.
Do not let a search advertisement or a shortened link make the decision for you. If you arrived through a search, compare the result with a company address you know, and navigate from the verified home page to support. If anything about the address is unclear, close the page and begin again from a trusted source.

Do not mistake a familiar identity signal for proof
A high search placement, a caller ID that displays the company name, an official-looking logo, or a message that uses your name can all be imitated. These clues may be consistent with a real company, but none independently verifies the contact. Verification comes from how you reached the route, the domain you inspected, and corroboration from trusted company material.
Check before sharing any information
Pause before entering an account number, payment information, identification document, or other personal data. Confirm that you are on the company’s verified site or in its trusted app and that you reached the support route without depending on the suspicious message itself. When in doubt, stop and use a different independently reached channel.
Choose the contact route with four tests
Evaluate every possible route against four questions: How independently did you reach it? Did you verify the domain or app? Can trusted company material corroborate it? Do the requests resemble ordinary support rather than demands for secrets, unusual payments, or remote access?
| Possible route | How independently you reached it | What to verify | When to stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website address you typed or a bookmark you created | High | Read the complete domain and navigate to the support page | The address is misspelled, unexpected, or asks for an unusual payment or secret |
| App already installed on your device | High when you recognize its origin | Open its built-in support route and confirm it is the company’s app | An unsolicited message tells you to install a different app or surrender control of your device |
| Product packaging, manual, or warranty material | Independent printed source | Compare the contact detail with the company’s official website | The printed detail conflicts with the verified site and cannot be reconciled |
| Search result | Medium until the destination is checked | Inspect the URL; remember that paid placement can contain fake support information | You cannot establish that the domain belongs to the company |
| Link, phone number, or sign-in prompt in an unexpected email or text | Low | Ignore the supplied details and find another direct route | Immediately, unless the company independently confirms the message |
Handle unexpected emails, texts, and calls safely
Do not use the message to authenticate itself
An unsolicited message may say that an order failed, an account is locked, or a refund is waiting. Do not click its link, call its number, open its attachment, or enter credentials into its sign-in prompt while deciding whether it is genuine. Those details are controlled by the sender and cannot prove the sender’s identity.
Instead, close the message, type the company’s known address, or open its established app. Check your account there for the same issue. If the message might matter, contact support through that independent route and ask whether the company sent it.

Use a second way to reach the company
CISA’s Secure Our World phishing tip sheet states: “Look up another way to contact a company or person directly:” The point is not to find a second number inside the suspicious message; it is to locate a direct route yourself, such as the company’s verified website. The FTC gives the same practical advice for unexpected company messages: use a website or phone number known to be real.
End a pressured interaction
Pressure is a warning sign. A caller or message that insists you act immediately, threatens account closure, or demands a particular payment method is not entitled to your cooperation. End the call or conversation, block or report the message using your device’s normal controls, and restart through a trusted channel.
Know what legitimate support should never require
Never disclose your account password
A support representative may need information to locate an account, but your password is a secret used to authenticate you. Do not read it aloud, type it into a form reached from an unexpected message, or send it in a reply. If you entered it on a page whose domain you cannot verify, stop using that page and access the account from the company’s known site.
Do not pay with gift cards or wire transfers
The FTC identifies demands for gift cards or wire transfers as scam indicators. These methods are difficult to reverse and are not a normal condition for resolving an account or purchase problem. Do not buy a card, reveal its number, or send a wire because a supposed support agent says it is required.
Do not grant remote access as a condition of help
Unexpected support contacts may ask you to install remote-control software or let the caller operate your computer. Decline and end the interaction. If you genuinely need technical assistance, begin at the company’s verified website and confirm any procedure there before allowing access.

Be cautious with other sensitive information
Unexpected requests for personal or payment information deserve the same pause. Verify the route first and ask the company, through an independent channel, what information it actually needs. A request that combines secrecy, urgency, and an unusual payment method is a reason to stop rather than a reason to comply.
Step-by-step: contact a company without relying on an impersonator
- Define the problem. Write down whether the issue concerns an account, purchase, billing, delivery, or technical trouble. Keep order numbers and dates available, but do not include a password in your notes.
- Choose an independent starting point. Type a web address you know, open the company’s established app, or consult a package or manual. Do not start from an unsolicited message.
- Inspect the destination. Read the full domain and confirm that it corresponds to the company. If you found the site in search, treat the result as unverified until this check is complete.
- Navigate to support yourself. Use the site’s or app’s published Help, Support, Contact, or account-help route. The exact labels and available channels differ by company.
- Corroborate the contact detail when possible. Compare a phone number or address with a manual, package, or other trusted company material. A match is useful; a conflict means you should pause and investigate through the verified site.
- Prepare only necessary information. Provide the problem description and relevant transaction details through the verified channel. Keep your password private and refuse gift cards, wire transfers, and remote-access demands.
- Evaluate the interaction. Stop if the representative applies unusual pressure, asks for secrets, or changes the contact route to one you cannot verify. End that interaction and contact the company again through the trusted route.
- Record the legitimate case. Save the support case number, date, and the independently reached channel so you can return to the same route without trusting a later unsolicited message.
If you already clicked, shared information, or paid
Stop the suspicious conversation
Do not continue negotiating with the sender or caller. Close the page, end the call, and avoid using any phone number or link supplied in that interaction. Re-enter the company’s known address or open its established app if you need to check the account.
Contact the bank or payment company independently
If money was sent or payment information was exposed, contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or payment company using a phone number or website you know is genuine. Explain what happened, ask what protective or reversal options are available, and follow the institution’s instructions. Do not use contact details from the suspicious message.
Secure the affected account through the real site
If you disclosed a password, return to the company’s verified website or app and use its normal account-security process to change it. Do not follow a reset link from the suspicious message. Review the account for activity you do not recognize and tell the company through its verified support route.
Report in the United States
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s guidance, last reviewed August 28, 2026, points consumers to the Federal Trade Commission, FBI, state attorney general, and local police for scam or fraud reporting. It also identifies ReportFraud.ftc.gov and IC3.gov. These are U.S. resources; other countries use different agencies. Reporting does not replace contacting your financial institution promptly.
Best Value
The FTC’s phishing guidance also directs people who shared information to IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps. Use the site by typing the address yourself or by reaching it through a trusted government source.
What can and cannot confirm a contact
- Can help confirm it: independently reaching the company’s known website or app, reading and verifying the domain, finding the support route there, and comparing details with genuine packaging or manuals.
- Cannot confirm it by itself: a top search result, paid search placement, a familiar logo, a company name in a text, caller ID, a phone number supplied by the caller, or a polished support page reached through an unexpected link.
- Strong reason to stop: a password request, gift-card or wire demand, remote-access requirement, or pressure to act before you can verify the route.
Limits and regional differences
There is no universal official phone number, contact form, or app that every company operates. One company may offer in-app messaging while another publishes only a web form or a regional phone line. Follow the options displayed on that company’s verified site for your country and product edition.
The FTC, CISA, and CFPB recommendations cited here are U.S.-focused consumer guidance. If you are elsewhere, use the equivalent consumer-protection, financial, and law-enforcement bodies in your jurisdiction. The core method remains the same: reach the company independently, verify the destination, corroborate it when possible, and stop when the interaction demands secrets, unusual payments, or remote access.

Authoritative guidance behind these steps
- Federal Trade Commission, “Scammers and ‘customer service’ — another imposter scam” (August 2020): explains that fake support information can appear in search results, recommends typing a known address, checking a found URL, and consulting packaging or manuals, and warns against passwords, gift cards, and wire transfers.
- Federal Trade Commission, “How To Avoid a Scam” (July 2023): advises avoiding links in unexpected company messages, using a known trustworthy website or phone number, and treating pressure or requests for sensitive information and particular payment methods as warning signs.
- Federal Trade Commission, “How To Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams”: recommends contacting a company through a phone number or website known to be real rather than the details in a suspicious message, and identifies
IdentityTheft.govfor recovery steps. - Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Secure Our World phishing tip sheet (distributed as of August 14, 2023): advises looking up another direct way to contact a company when a message looks suspicious.
- Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, “Who do I contact for help with a scam or fraud?” (last reviewed August 28, 2026): lists trusted financial and government reporting routes, including the FTC, FBI, state and local authorities,
ReportFraud.ftc.gov, andIC3.gov.
When a company problem arrives with an unexpected message, treat the message as a claim to verify—not as your contact directory. Close it, reach the company independently, inspect the domain, and use only the support path you can establish as genuine.
