To enable two-factor authentication (2FA), sign in through your broker’s official app or website, open its security settings, choose the MFA or two-step verification option, and complete the prompts for a supported method. The exact labels and choices vary by broker and account. Before you finish, check whether verification will be required at every login or only on untrusted devices, and learn how to recover access if you lose your phone.
Where do I find my brokerage account’s security settings?
Start in the brokerage’s official app or website. After signing in, look for a section such as Profile, Security Settings, or Security Center. The setting may be called “Two Factor Authentication,” “Multifactor Authentication,” “Two Step Factor Authentication,” or “2-Step Verification”; terminology varies between services. CISA advises users to start by looking in the security settings of their accounts (CISA: Turn On MFA).

If you cannot find the option, search the broker’s own help center for “MFA,” “2FA,” or “two-step verification,” or contact support using contact details from the official site or app. Do not rely on instructions for a different broker or account type.

How do I turn on two-factor authentication?
- Sign in through an official channel. Open the broker’s app or type its website address yourself. Avoid links in unexpected messages.
- Open account security. Go to Profile, Security Settings, Security Center, or the equivalent.
- Choose the extra sign-in check. Select the MFA, 2FA, two-step verification, or login security setting and choose the option to enable it or require a second method.
- Select an available method and enroll. Follow the broker’s prompts. Depending on the method, you may need to confirm a phone number, install or sign in to the broker’s app, allow notifications, or connect an authenticator app.
- Choose when verification is required. If the broker offers a choice, decide whether to require verification on every login or only on devices it does not recognize as trusted.
- Check your recovery details. Confirm the contact information the broker uses for alerts or recovery, and understand how to regain access if your phone or verification device is unavailable.
- Check that you can complete the process. If practical and consistent with the broker’s instructions, sign out and sign back in to confirm the selected method works.
MFA adds a check beyond your password. It can take the form of a code, an app approval, or another method supported by the service; it is an additional layer, not a replacement for protecting your password (CISA: Turn On MFA).

Which verification method should I choose?
Choose from the methods currently offered in your own brokerage account. CISA describes text or voice messages, application-based MFA, phishing-resistant MFA, and fingerprint or face scans as common forms. Its guidance recommends phishing-resistant MFA when available, but that does not mean every brokerage offers it. Do not assume a particular method has a specific security property unless the broker says so.
- Check device dependence. Text messages, app approvals, and authenticator apps require access to an enrolled phone or other device. Consider what you would do if it were lost, replaced, or reset.
- Check broker compatibility. Authenticator-app support differs. Fidelity says it supports most authenticator apps and lists Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Apple’s Passwords app as examples; that does not establish support at another broker (Fidelity: Extra security at login).
- Weigh convenience against frequency. A trusted-device option can reduce repeated prompts, but it means that device may not require MFA on every later login. Avoid marking a public or shared device as trusted.
- Understand recovery before relying on one device. Procedures for a lost phone or changed number are provider-specific. Know how to reach official support if the enrolled method stops working.
Do I need to require a code every time I log in?
If your broker offers the choice, requiring verification at every login adds an extra check each time. Limiting it to untrusted devices can be more convenient on a personal device the broker recognizes, but it skips the prompt on trusted devices. The right setting depends on your needs and on how you protect and control the devices you use.

For example, Schwab’s setup tutorial presents “Always at login” and “Only on untrusted devices” as choices. Fidelity says a trusted device can skip MFA on future logins, though MFA may still be required for certain sensitive transactions. Those examples describe the named services, not a universal brokerage setting (Schwab: How to set up two-factor authentication; Fidelity: Extra security at login).

Fidelity
Fidelity directs customers to its security settings or mobile app. Its guidance describes approving a login with a mobile-app push notification or connecting an authenticator app. It says trusted devices can skip MFA on later logins, although certain sensitive transactions may still require it, and advises against marking public devices as trusted (Fidelity: Extra security at login).
Charles Schwab
Schwab’s tutorial gives the path Profile > Security Settings > 2-Step Verification. It demonstrates choosing text verification, selecting a mobile number already added to the account, confirming the number if needed, and entering the code sent at the next login. The tutorial also describes the “Always at login” and “Only on untrusted devices” choices. Schwab says technical support can generate a code if a customer cannot log in through two-factor authentication (Schwab: How to set up two-factor authentication).

Robinhood
Robinhood’s verification overview describes checks that may apply to sign-ins or account changes, including device approval, an SMS one-time code, bank verification, a selfie, or an image of government ID. It does not give a complete, stable menu-by-menu enrollment path, so consult Robinhood’s current in-app help for the steps that apply to your account (Robinhood: Verify your identity).

How should I protect access and prepare for a lost phone?
Keep your recovery contact information current where your broker uses it, and identify the broker’s official recovery route before changing or replacing your verification device. Fidelity says accurate contact details support alerts about important transactions and profile updates (Fidelity: Extra security at login). Recovery methods are not the same across brokers; Schwab’s support-generated code is an example of one provider’s guidance, not a general guarantee.
Never give your password or verification code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly by phone, text, or email. Fidelity says it will not ask customers for login credentials or a security code in an unsolicited communication (Fidelity: Protect your account). Use contact information found in the official app or website if you need help.
Turning on MFA adds protection beyond a password, but it does not guarantee that an account cannot be compromised or that every scam will be blocked (CISA: Turn On MFA).
