No—not on the evidence available. A 2025 study found that engineered activated carbon made from spent coffee grounds could remove selected organic pollutants from prepared water samples. It did not test a complete household filter or show that the material makes drinking water safe, and it did not establish protection against bacteria, viruses, or other hazards.
What the coffee-ground study actually tested
Block and colleagues’ 2025 study produced activated carbon from spent coffee grounds using magnesium carbonate activation. The resulting material had a reported surface area of about 600 m²/g. In aqueous-solution experiments, it removed selected substances—including methylene blue, methyl orange, diclofenac, tetracycline, and bisphenol A—by up to 100% under the study conditions. Those findings show potential as an adsorbent: certain molecules can attach to the material’s surface. They do not show that untreated coffee grounds, homemade biochar, or a particular household filter will remove the same substances from a person’s tap or well water. The study’s pollutant-specific results are not a test of representative drinking water, and they do not establish performance against metals, nitrate, salts, pathogens, or a mixture of contaminants.

Why pollutant removal is not the same as safe water
Adsorption does not disinfect
The coffee-derived material was not shown to inactivate disease-causing organisms. Adsorbing some chemicals cannot be treated as proof that bacteria, viruses, or parasites have been removed or killed.

A 2021 field study followed under-sink activated-carbon block filters in 17 North Carolina private-well homes for five months. The study reported that the filters were not protective against coliphages in the incoming water; some bacteria also increased in filtered water. Those were not coffee-biochar filters, but the results demonstrate why carbon filtration should not be assumed to provide disinfection. Read the study abstract.
A result for one chemical cannot be generalized
Different contaminants behave differently, and removal depends on the material and the conditions. A 2023 study of date-palm biochar in modified biosand filters found differences by contaminant and between laboratory and pilot-scale systems; some dissolved ions were not removed. That study was not about coffee biochar, but it illustrates why results for one feedstock and setup do not establish performance for another. Read the study.

Even a promising result for a chemically engineered biochar is specific to that material and filter design. In a 2025 bench-scale study, aluminum-hydroxide-coated biochar in a particular biosand setup kept fluoride below 1.5 mg/L for 313 days. That does not establish fluoride removal by untreated coffee-ground biochar or by a homemade filter. Read the study.

What determines whether a biochar filter works
“Biochar” is not a single standardized filter medium. Results can change with the feedstock, how it is activated or modified, pore structure, target contaminant, water chemistry, contact time, flow rate, and the design of the full filter. The coffee study itself reported pH-dependent removal.

A 2024 review discusses biochar and activated carbon made from locally available materials as promising adsorbents, while also describing health risks and the engineering considerations involved in household treatment. It supports further investigation, not a blanket claim that homemade media make water potable. Read the review.
For a household device, useful evidence would need to cover the exact filter configuration and source water, including relevant contaminants, microbial performance where needed, flow and contact time, breakthrough (when the medium stops removing a contaminant effectively), and maintenance. The cited coffee-ground study does not establish safe preparation, possible leaching, microbial growth in the device, service life, or maintenance requirements for a homemade filter.

What to do if you need safer drinking water
Choose treatment based on the hazards in the actual water source rather than on a filter material’s general reputation. If you use a private well or suspect contamination, identify the relevant risks through appropriate water testing and follow guidance from the responsible local public-health or drinking-water authority. A carbon cartridge may be relevant for a known contaminant only when its exact performance claims address that contaminant; a generic cartridge is not a universal purifier or a pathogen barrier.
The World Health Organization’s household water-treatment evaluation scheme assesses technologies for microbial contaminant removal and helps inform selection of effective options.
