That setting gives the host access to the Escape-menu Save command; it does not add a Save button for ordinary multiplayer clients. An administrator can save during play with /save. If you need persistence that does not depend on the original host, move the world to a dedicated server and let the server own the save.

What “client-side saves” means in Space Engineers
Space Engineers separates the person hosting a session from the other players connected to it. The host, or a dedicated server, owns the authoritative world state. A normal multiplayer client receives the world and sends gameplay changes to that authority; it does not receive an independent copy that it can commit with the Escape-menu Save control.

The EnableSaving session setting is therefore narrower than its name may suggest. The SessionSettings reference describes it as controlling whether “the player hosting this world can save through escape menu.” The same reference explicitly says multiplayer clients will not have that option in the menu regardless of the setting. Turning the Boolean on cannot override that permission boundary.
- Local host: the player who launched the world can use the Escape-menu Save command when saving is enabled.
- Ordinary client: no Escape-menu Save option is provided, even when
EnableSavingis enabled. - Administrator: can issue
/savein chat, subject to the server’s administrative permissions. - Dedicated server: the server process owns persistence and writes the authoritative save.
This explains why Save may appear greyed out or be absent when you join a friend’s world: your account is a client, not the session host.

Enable saving in an existing locally hosted world
Use this procedure when the world is already in your local save list and you normally start it from the game client. Do not launch the world before changing the setting; edit the save from the list first.
Before changing anything
- Close any running instance of the world.
- Make a copy of the entire world folder. The default Windows location is
%APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves; the game may contain additional profile or platform-specific locations. - Keep the backup outside the active save directory so an automatic cleanup or overwrite cannot remove both copies.
Exact menu path
- Return to the main menu.
- Choose Load Game.
- Single-click the existing world in the list. A double-click normally launches it, which bypasses the edit screen.
- Choose Edit Settings.
- Review the world settings and make sure saving is enabled for the host. The setting is represented by
EnableSavingin the session settings. - Apply the change, return to the world list, and reload the world.
- Once loaded, perform a deliberate host save and verify that the world returns to the list with a current timestamp or other expected save indication.
The menu path is for an existing save; it is not the same as changing defaults for a newly created world. If you edit a different entry or create a new world by mistake, the original session will retain its previous settings.

What the setting changes—and what it cannot change
Enabling saving changes the host’s access to the Save control in the Escape menu. It does not transfer ownership of the save to connected players, create per-player save slots, or allow a client to write the host’s files. There is no supported switch that turns the ordinary client into a second local host while remaining in the same multiplayer session.
If you are a guest and need a checkpoint, ask the host to save. If you have administrator rights on the session or server, use the chat command /save instead of looking for a client-side menu item. The command is an administrative fallback, not a way to grant every player Save-menu access.
Dedicated-server worlds: where saving is controlled
A dedicated server changes who owns persistence. The server process, rather than the person who originally created the world, is authoritative. Players can disconnect without taking the world’s save system with them, and the server can continue running when the original host is offline.
For a dedicated installation, EnableSaving is a Boolean session setting. The SessionSettings reference identifies sandbox_config.sbc as the prioritized settings file for session settings. The safe editing sequence is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Stop the dedicated server completely. Do not edit the active configuration while the process is writing it.
- Locate the server’s copy of
sandbox_config.sbcfor the target world. - Make a backup of the complete world directory, including the configuration and player-data files.
- Edit only the relevant setting, preserving the surrounding XML structure, capitalization, and closing tags.
- Save the file, then start or restart the dedicated server.
- Reload the world and test a save from the server side or with an administrator’s
/savecommand.
A malformed XML file can prevent the world from loading or cause the server to fall back to another configuration. Keeping the original file beside your edited copy makes recovery straightforward.

Local hosting versus dedicated hosting
Choose the hosting model based on who must be able to keep the world available and who should control saves.
| Question | Local host | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the authoritative save? | The player who launched the world. | The server process and its world directory. |
| Must the original host be online? | Yes, unless another host takes over by loading a copy. | No; players can connect while the server is running independently. |
| Where are world files stored? | On the host computer, normally under %APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves on Windows. |
In the dedicated server’s save directory; the exact parent folder depends on the server installation. |
| Who can trigger a save? | The host through the Escape menu when saving is enabled; an administrator can use /save. |
The server controls persistence; an administrator can use /save when permitted. |
| How are backups made? | Copy the complete local world folder or publish a private/unlisted Workshop backup. | Stop the server and copy its complete world directory before configuration or version changes. |
Neither model gives ordinary clients an Escape-menu Save button. The practical difference is whether the host’s computer or a continuously running server is responsible for the authoritative files.
Move an existing local world to a dedicated server
If the goal is to let the world persist independently of the original host, migrate the existing save rather than trying to grant guests local-save permissions.

- Back up the entire source folder under
%APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves. Do not copy only a screenshot, blueprint, or individual configuration file. - On the dedicated server, stop the server process before changing files.
- Copy the local world folder into the dedicated server’s save folder, retaining its internal files and directory structure.
- Confirm that the copied world contains the normal session files, including the world settings file commonly identified as
Sandbox.sbc. - Configure the dedicated server to load that world and, if needed, adjust its prioritized
sandbox_config.sbcsession settings while the server is stopped. - Start the server, connect, and verify that the expected map, grids, players, and settings are present.
- Make a test save, stop the server cleanly, restart it, and confirm that the test change remains.
The official dedicated-server guidance specifically describes copying a local PC save from the local %APPDATA%SpaceEngineersSaves tree into the dedicated-server save folder. Keep the original local copy untouched until the server has been tested; it is your simplest rollback if the wrong world or folder is selected.
Backup and recovery rules
Steam Cloud is not a substitute for a world backup. The official backup guidance states that Steam Cloud does not save world files. Treat the save folder as the recoverable source of truth.
Make a reliable backup
- Stop the local game or dedicated server so no file is being written.
- Copy the entire world folder, not just
Sandbox.sbcorsandbox_config.sbc. - Add a date and a short description to the backup folder name.
- Store at least one copy outside the normal Space Engineers save path.
- For an off-machine copy, publish the world as a private or unlisted Workshop item if that workflow suits your account, then retain the local archive as well.
Recover after a bad setting edit
- Stop the game or server.
- Move the damaged or unwanted active folder out of the save directory.
- Restore the previously copied folder in its place, preserving the original folder name and structure.
- Start the game or server and load the restored world.
- Only after it loads successfully should you retry the setting change, one file or menu option at a time.
Keeping a full folder backup also protects against accidental world selection, failed migrations, and configuration edits that leave the session unable to load.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
“Save is greyed out” or missing for me
Check your role first. If you joined another player’s world, you are a multiplayer client and the host-only Escape-menu option will not appear. Ask the host to save or, if you are an administrator, issue /save in chat.

I enabled saving, but other players still cannot save
This is expected. EnableSaving is scoped to the player hosting the world. Recheck that you edited the intended world entry, but do not expect the setting to create a client control.
The setting change did not persist
Make sure you used Load Game → single-click the world → Edit Settings, applied the change, and reloaded that same world. Editing a newly created world, a duplicate folder, or a non-prioritized server configuration will not affect the session you are running.
The dedicated server ignores my edit
Stop the server before editing, confirm that you changed the configuration for the world the server actually loads, and preserve valid XML. Because sandbox_config.sbc is the prioritized session-settings file identified by the reference, changing another copy may have no effect. Restart the server after saving the file.
The migrated world does not appear
Verify that the complete world folder—not a parent directory or a single .sbc file—was copied into the server’s save location. Check that the server account can read and write the folder, then confirm the server is pointed at that world before attempting another migration.
Platform and version scope
The documented procedures and file paths above cover PC local saves and dedicated-server operation. Menu labels, save locations, and hosting controls can differ on Xbox, PlayStation, and third-party hosted control panels. The available documentation does not establish a complete current matrix for every console edition or hosting provider, so verify the platform-specific instructions before editing files or assuming that a PC menu path exists.
For a standard PC local world, the dependable rule is simple: edit the existing save from the Load Game screen, enable host saving, and keep a folder backup. For a multiplayer group that needs persistence without the original host, migrate the world to a dedicated server and use administrator save commands where appropriate.
