Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAndroid and iPhone players can join a Terraria TShock server hosted on a Windows or Linux computer, provided the TShock build supports the exact Terraria version installed on their mobile devices. Install and extract TShock, start the server, choose a world and port, complete the owner-account setup, then expose that port to your local network or the internet.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Terraria servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The default Terraria server port is 7777. Mobile players enter the host address and the same port in Terraria’s multiplayer screen; a version mismatch or an unreachable port is the usual reason a connection fails.

What must match before anyone connects
TShock is not a universal compatibility layer. Each release is built for particular Terraria server protocols, so the mobile game build and the TShock release must correspond. Installing the newest archive without checking its supported Terraria version can produce a server-version or handshake error even when the address and password are correct.
Pryaxis release notes identify support by Terraria version. The documented history includes TShock 6.1 for Terraria 1.4.5.6 and a newer release section adding Terraria 1.4.5.8 support. Treat those numbers as examples of release-specific support, not as a guarantee that every mobile installation uses either build. Check the release notes for the exact version shown by your players’ mobile clients before downloading.

| Item to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Terraria build | Exact version installed on the Android or iOS device | The server protocol must understand the client handshake. |
| TShock package | Release notes list support for that Terraria version | TShock releases are version-specific; a different build may reject the client. |
| Server port | The port selected when the server starts and the value in config.json |
The phone must use the same listening port. |
| Network address | Local IP for LAN play or public address for internet play | A correct port is useless if the address points to the wrong network. |
Can Android and iPhone players join the same PC server?
Yes. 505 Games documents both local PC-hosted and online PC-hosted mobile multiplayer. Its support information says multiplayer works across Android and iOS and across phones and tablets. In practice, the PC must run a compatible Terraria/TShock server, and every mobile player must use a client version that the selected TShock release supports.
Choose the host and prepare it
You need a Windows or Linux machine, or a managed host or VPS that gives you file access and control of the listening port. The host must remain powered on and connected whenever people want to play. A managed service is only suitable if it lets you install the required TShock release, select a custom port, and access the world and configuration files.
Windows host
Windows is the shortest path when you want to use the packaged executable. You download the release archive, extract it into a dedicated folder, and launch TerrariaServer.exe. Keep the folder separate from unrelated Terraria files so that worlds, logs, permissions and configuration remain easy to back up.
Linux host
On Linux, the TShock guide requires the mono-complete package and recommends current Mono. Start the server with mono TerrariaServer.exe. If Linux clients cannot join despite a running process and an open port, the guide suggests trying mono-devel as an additional troubleshooting step.
Managed host or VPS
A hosted machine can avoid home-router configuration, but it does not remove the version and file-management work. Before paying for a service, confirm all of the following:

- It supports the Terraria version required by your mobile players and allows the matching TShock archive.
- You can set or expose the port selected by the server.
- You can download or replace the complete server directory.
- You can reach
tshock.sqlite, thetshockfolder, world files andconfig.jsonfor backups and upgrades. - You can restart the process and read its console output, including the setup code.
No particular hosting provider or hardware model is required for this setup. The important capabilities are version control, file access and reliable port access.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Install and extract TShock
- Download the TShock release archive identified in the Pryaxis release notes as supporting your mobile players’ Terraria version.
- Create a dedicated server directory, such as a folder reserved only for this world and its TShock files.
- Extract the complete archive into that directory. Do not launch the server from inside a compressed archive; extraction is required so TShock can create and update its configuration, database and world-related files.
- Keep the original archive until the first successful backup and connection test. It gives you a known package to restore if an upgrade is later removed.
- On Linux, install the required Mono runtime before launching. On Windows, use the executable included with the extracted package.
Do not mix files from unrelated TShock releases. If you change versions later, make a complete backup first and replace the installation deliberately rather than copying random DLLs or configuration fragments between versions.
Start the server, create a world and choose the port
Open a terminal or command prompt in the extracted directory. On Windows, run TerrariaServer.exe. On Linux, run mono TerrariaServer.exe.
- When prompted, select an existing world or choose the option to generate a new one.
- When prompted for the listening port, enter
7777unless you have a specific reason to use another port. TShock documentation identifies 7777 as the default Terraria server port. - Let startup finish and leave the process running. The console displays a setup code that is needed for the first administrator bootstrap.
- Record the selected port and the setup code privately. The setup code is not the long-term owner password, but anyone who can use it during initial setup can create the first privileged account.
If you choose a different port, that value becomes authoritative. Players, firewall rules, router forwarding and config.json must all use the selected number; do not tell mobile players to use 7777 merely because it is the default.
Complete the first owner-account setup
TShock’s initial setup is performed by joining the running server and issuing commands in chat. For a test on the same computer, connect to 127.0.0.1 or localhost. A phone on the same home network must use the host computer’s local IP instead.

- After joining, run
/setup YOUR_SETUP_CODE, replacing the code with the value printed by the server console. - Create the owner account with
/user add YOUR_USERNAME YOUR_PASSWORD owner. Use a unique password that is not reused elsewhere. - Authenticate as that account with
/login YOUR_USERNAME YOUR_PASSWORD. - Run
/setupagain to finish the setup process.
The Owner account contains all privileges on the server. Protect its password and do not paste the setup code or credentials into a public chat. If a command reports that setup is unavailable, confirm that you copied the code exactly and that you are issuing the command on the server where the code was generated.
Set passwords, slots and other access controls
After the first start, TShock stores server settings in config.json. Stop the server before editing this file so that a running process does not overwrite your changes. The exact value selected at startup should agree with the configuration.
| Setting | Purpose | Documented default or action |
|---|---|---|
ServerPort |
Port on which Terraria accepts connections | Use the startup selection; 7777 is the documented default. |
ServerPassword |
Requires a password before a player can enter | Set a password when the server should not be open to everyone who knows the address. |
MaxSlots |
Maximum simultaneous player slots | Default is 8. |
ReservedSlots |
Slots held back for users with the appropriate access | Default is 20 in the documented configuration reference; review this value for your intended access policy. |
The documented defaults are configuration values, not a performance promise for every host. A server with eight active players may behave differently depending on the world, plugins and host resources. Change one setting at a time, restart, and verify the result with a normal player account.
Make the server reachable on your network
Testing on the same computer
Use 127.0.0.1 or localhost as the address and the selected port. This isolates account and server-start problems from router and firewall problems.
Playing over a home LAN
Find the host computer’s private IP address and give mobile players that address plus the selected port. All devices must be on the same reachable local network. The phone should not use localhost; on a phone, that name refers to the phone itself, not the computer running TShock.

If a local test on the host works but another device on the same network cannot connect, check the host firewall for an inbound rule allowing the Terraria/TShock process or selected port. Also verify that the host’s private IP has not changed since you gave it to players.
Playing over the internet
For an online server, players use the host’s public address and the selected port. The host network, router or hosting provider must forward or allow that port to the machine running TShock. A home router normally needs a port-forwarding rule from the public interface to the host’s private IP; a managed host must permit the port in its own network controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm the TShock process is running and listening on the selected port.
- Allow that port through the host operating-system firewall.
- On a home network, forward the same port from the router to the server computer’s private IP.
- Give players the public address and port, not the private LAN address.
- Test from a device on an outside network. A successful test only from inside the home network does not prove that internet forwarding works.
Do not publish the owner password or setup code with the server address. If a provider or router cannot expose the chosen port, changing the mobile app settings will not solve the problem; you need a reachable port or a different host.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connect from Terraria Mobile
Use Terraria Mobile’s multiplayer flow to add a server manually. Enter the address appropriate to the connection type and the exact port selected on the server:
- Same computer:
127.0.0.1orlocalhost, for a local test. - Same home network: the host’s private IP address.
- Internet: the host’s public address or the address supplied by the hosting provider.
Enter the server password if ServerPassword is configured. Android and iOS players can play together, and phones and tablets can connect across device families according to 505 Games’ mobile multiplayer documentation. That cross-device support does not override TShock’s version requirement: a supported Android client and an unsupported iOS build will not become compatible simply because both are mobile.

Troubleshoot by the symptom
“Server version” or handshake error
Compare the exact Terraria version displayed or reported by the mobile installation with the version named in the TShock release notes. Do not assume that the newest server package works with every mobile client. If the versions differ, install a TShock release that explicitly supports the client build, or bring the clients to the version supported by the server. Keep the world and database backed up before changing the package.
Connection refused or timeout
- Confirm the server process is still running and did not exit after world creation.
- Check that the phone uses the address of the actual host and the port selected at startup.
- Read
ServerPortinconfig.json; that configured value is authoritative. - Check the host firewall, router forwarding and any provider-level firewall for that same port.
- For internet play, test from an outside network rather than relying on a local connection.
Local connection works, internet connection fails
This pattern normally points to addressing or port exposure, not the owner account. Recheck the public address, the router’s destination private IP and the inbound firewall rule. Make sure the server computer still has the private IP used by the forwarding rule. Test with the public address from a separate network.
Linux launch or join problems
Confirm that mono-complete is installed and that you start the executable with mono TerrariaServer.exe. If the server launches but Linux clients cannot join, the TShock guide suggests trying mono-devel. Recheck the console for startup errors before changing network settings.
Owner commands fail
Repeat the bootstrap sequence in order: use /setup YOUR_SETUP_CODE, create the account with the owner group, authenticate with /login, then run /setup. A typo in the username or password, using an expired or incorrect setup code, or attempting commands before login can make a valid installation appear broken.
You need to start setup over
Deleting tshock.sqlite and setup.lock returns TShock to a pre-setup state and removes users. Only do this after stopping the server and making a complete backup. You will have to create the owner account again and reapply any access settings.
Back up before upgrades or repairs
Before replacing TShock files, copy the entire server installation to separate storage. Pryaxis specifically recommends including tshock.sqlite and the tshock folder, along with all other files and folders. Include the world files and config.json so that a failed upgrade can be rolled back without losing the world or permissions.
- Stop the running server cleanly.
- Copy the complete server directory and label the backup with the TShock and Terraria versions.
- Read the new release notes and confirm that the target mobile version is supported.
- Extract the new archive into a new directory or replace the old files only after the backup is verified.
- Start the upgraded server, check the console for errors, and test with one mobile account before inviting everyone back.
Do not delete the old backup after the first successful login. Keep it until you have confirmed that the world, owner account, configuration and mobile connections all work on the new release.
A practical launch checklist
- Exact mobile Terraria version identified for every player.
- TShock release selected from version-specific Pryaxis notes.
- Complete archive extracted into a dedicated server folder.
- Windows executable or Linux Mono runtime working.
- World selected or generated and server process left running.
- Port recorded; 7777 used unless there is a documented reason to change it.
- Setup code copied privately from the console.
- Owner created with
/user add, authenticated with/login, and setup finalized. ServerPassword,ServerPort,MaxSlotsandReservedSlotsreviewed inconfig.json.- LAN address or public address supplied with the same port.
- Firewall, router or provider rules tested from the network where players will connect.
- Full backup made before any upgrade or reset.
How to tell where a failure is occurring
A useful diagnostic order is to test from the inside out. First, connect on the host with 127.0.0.1; this checks that TShock started and the world loaded. Next, connect from another device on the same LAN; this checks the private address and local firewall. Finally, connect from an outside network using the public address; this checks forwarding and provider-level access. If the first test fails, focus on TShock, Mono or the world. If only the final test fails, focus on routing and port exposure. If the network tests pass but the client reports a version error, return to the exact Terraria/TShock compatibility pair.
