How to Enable Satellite Messaging on iPhone and Android

iPhone supports satellite messages to friends and family on eligible devices. Google’s documented Pixel option is Satellite SOS for emergency texting, not ordinary Android messaging.

You can send ordinary messages to friends and family by satellite on supported iPhones, but the Android instructions covered here apply to emergency texting on specified Google Pixel 9 phones—not general texting with friends. Check your phone, software, region, and carrier support before relying on either option.

What satellite messaging does on each platform

Option Who you can message Documented eligibility and availability
Apple Messages via satellite Friends and family; not emergency dispatch iPhone 14 or later, with an active SIM. Apple lists the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Japan; minimum iOS versions vary by region.
Google Pixel Satellite SOS Emergency services, with an option to notify emergency contacts Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold in the United States, except Hawaii and Alaska. Google’s instructions require Google Messages as the default messaging app.

These features are not interchangeable. Apple documents personal satellite messaging in Messages and a separate Emergency SOS via satellite path. The Google instructions cover Pixel emergency communication only; they do not establish ordinary Android phone-to-phone satellite texting or support on other Android models.

Check requirements before you leave coverage

Apple says Messages via satellite works on all iPhone 14 or later models with an active SIM. The required minimum is iOS 18 or later in the United States, Canada, and Japan, and iOS 18.4 or later in Mexico. Availability is subject to regulatory approvals elsewhere. Satellite connectivity is not offered on iPhone models purchased in Armenia, Belarus, mainland China, Kazakhstan, or Russia. Models purchased in Hong Kong or Macao require iPhone 16e or later. See Apple’s Messages via satellite requirements and availability.

To use iMessage over satellite, turn iMessage on while you still have cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. SMS support depends on your network provider, and provider fees may apply.

Connect and send a message

  1. Before your trip, confirm your iPhone model, iOS version, active SIM, and iMessage setting. To preview the connection process, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Satellite Connection Demo.
  2. When you are outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, open Messages and tap Use Messages via Satellite when prompted.
  3. Follow the on-screen directions to position your phone. Stay outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon; Apple says you do not need to hold the iPhone overhead.
  4. Compose and send your text, following the connection status and prompts until it is sent.

What you can send and what can get in the way

Apple supports text, emoji, and Tapbacks over satellite, but not photos, videos, audio messages, stickers, or group messages. Apple says a message may take over a minute under light or medium foliage, or a few minutes in the sending flow; those are guidance estimates, not measured averages. Heavy foliage and other obstructions can block the connection. iMessages remain end-to-end encrypted between devices in transit.

If iMessage is unavailable, the iPhone may use SMS where the network provider supports satellite SMS. Availability and possible fees depend on that provider. Apple warns: “Messages via satellite shouldn’t be used in emergencies.”

Use Satellite SOS on a supported Pixel

Google’s documented feature is Satellite SOS, an emergency text conversation with emergency services—not a way to text friends and family. Google lists Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold in the United States, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. Google Messages must be the default messaging app; changing the default disables Satellite SOS. Check Google’s Pixel Satellite SOS instructions for current eligibility and details.

  1. Before going off-grid, confirm Google Messages is your default messaging app. To try a demo, go to Settings > Safety and emergency > Satellite SOS.
  2. If you need emergency help and cannot connect by mobile or Wi-Fi, dial your local emergency number.
  3. If prompted, choose Satellite SOS, then tap Use Satellite SOS and Start.
  4. Complete the emergency questionnaire, choose whether to notify your emergency contacts, and follow the positioning prompts.

Stay outside with a clear view of the sky so you can connect and receive replies. Google says emergency providers should reply by text within a few minutes, but connection and response times vary with location, site conditions, and other factors. Satellite positioning and delays mean this is not equivalent to an ordinary text or call.

If you need emergency help on iPhone

Messages via satellite is for personal messages. If an emergency call cannot connect because there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, follow the satellite option shown by iPhone and its on-screen prompts to use Emergency SOS via satellite. A clear view of the sky and horizon is needed. Apple recommends setting up Medical ID and emergency contacts and trying the Emergency SOS demo before a remote trip. See Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite guidance.

Before relying on a satellite connection

  • Check current manufacturer and carrier guidance for your exact phone, software version, country, and—where relevant—network provider. Feature availability can vary.
  • Prepare and test the available demo before leaving coverage; the real connection requires following the phone’s alignment prompts outdoors.
  • Choose a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky and horizon. Trees, buildings, and other obstructions can interfere.
  • Allow extra time. Satellite messages may take longer than ordinary texts, and the guidance cited here does not establish comparative reliability or success rates.
