To enable Realtek audio, first check that Windows is using the correct output, then identify the exact PC or motherboard model and install its matching audio driver. Realtek’s general driver may not include a computer maker’s customizations, so it is not a universal fix. If the driver appears damaged or the problem began after an update, Windows provides options to reinstall or roll back the device driver.
Check the output before changing drivers
A missing or silent audio output does not necessarily mean the Realtek driver is disabled. Start with the simple checks:

- Make sure the speakers or headphones are connected and powered on, if applicable.
- Check that Windows is not muted and that the volume is raised.
- In Windows sound settings, select the output you intend to use. If several outputs are listed, such as speakers, headphones, or a display, the wrong one may be selected.
If the intended output is not available or sound still does not work, check whether Windows recognizes an audio device.

- Open Device Manager. You can search for it from the Windows taskbar.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for a Realtek audio device or another audio device, and note whether Windows shows a warning or error. Microsoft uses this device listing for its driver update, uninstall, and rollback troubleshooting steps. See Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide.
If no audio device appears, or the listed device has a problem, do not assume that a generic Realtek download is the right match. First identify the computer model, or the motherboard model for a desktop built from separate components.

Find the driver for your exact PC or motherboard
- Find the full model name of the computer. For a desktop assembled from separate parts, identify the motherboard model.
- Go to the computer maker’s or motherboard maker’s official support page and locate downloads for that exact model.
- Choose the audio driver that matches both the model and the Windows version listed by the manufacturer. Follow that page’s installation instructions.
- Restart if the installer requests it, then check the output selection and test sound again.
This model-specific route matters because Realtek says its website’s audio drivers are general drivers for its audio chips and may not include customizations made by the system or motherboard manufacturer. Realtek directs users who need the original product’s full features and customizations to that manufacturer’s support page. Read Realtek’s driver notice, and see Microsoft’s guidance on updating audio drivers.
Choose a driver that matches your Windows version
Driver listings can be confusing when a package is called “Realtek audio” but names an older Windows release. Realtek’s official High Definition Audio Codecs download page lists R2.83 packages labelled for Windows Vista through Windows 10, with displayed update dates including August 15, 2024, and February 19, 2024. Those labels do not establish that the package is suitable for every Windows 11 computer.

Use the PC or motherboard maker’s listing for your model and operating system where available. If the manufacturer does not provide a suitable package, use Windows’ driver-update and troubleshooting options rather than assuming an older general package will work. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check which Windows version is installed and its current support status when choosing a driver.

If the device is listed but its driver may be out of date
In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device, and choose the driver update option. If Windows does not find the needed driver, Microsoft recommends checking the computer maker’s support site for the latest audio driver. Install only a package listed for your exact PC or motherboard model and Windows version.
If updating does not restore sound
- In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and choose the option to uninstall the device. The wording and any driver-removal checkbox can vary.
- Restart the computer. Windows can attempt to reinstall the audio driver during startup.
- Check whether the device and intended output are available, then test sound.
If Windows does not restore sound, Microsoft documents trying the generic audio driver available in Windows. Treat it as a troubleshooting fallback: a generic driver may not provide the manufacturer-specific features or customizations for the computer.

If the problem began after a driver update
In Device Manager, open the audio device’s properties and use the driver rollback option if Windows offers it. Microsoft includes rolling back a driver among its steps for audio problems that begin after an update. If rollback is unavailable or does not help, return to the PC or motherboard maker’s support page for the matching driver and model-specific guidance.

When a Realtek download is not the right next step
A Realtek audio driver is software for audio hardware already in the computer; it does not add a missing audio device. The right package depends on the computer or motherboard model, the Windows version, and the symptom. Begin with Windows settings and Device Manager, then use the manufacturer’s official support page. The available official guidance supports those Windows and manufacturer routes; it does not establish that third-party driver-updater services are safe or suitable.
