Infrastructure performance is more than whether an asset is online. It is how that asset behaves over time, how its condition or output changes, and what those changes could mean for service, maintenance, and future investment. Understanding that pattern can help operators make more deliberate choices—but it is a strategic case, not a quantified guarantee of savings or reliability gains.
What does infrastructure performance mean?
A binary status such as operational or failed tells an operator whether an asset is working at a particular moment. Performance adds a time dimension: whether the asset is behaving as expected, whether its behavior is changing, and whether that change could signal a developing issue.

As Mick Mohan, Group Engineering Director at Telent, puts it, “Finding the answers starts with understanding infrastructure performance in greater detail. Not simply knowing whether an asset is operational, but understanding how it is performing, how its performance changes over time and what those changes might indicate.” The distinction matters because a system can remain in service while its condition or behavior is shifting.

Transport, utilities, and communications operators must maintain service while managing aging assets and competing demands for reliability, resilience, cybersecurity, sustainability, and constrained budgets. These pressures do not come with unlimited staff or capital, so operators have to decide which issues need attention first and where investment can have the greatest effect.
Relevant operational information may also be divided among different systems, teams, and generations of technology. If those sources are considered separately, an operator may see only a partial picture of an asset or network. Mohan’s argument is that bringing information together with engineering expertise can help teams interpret that picture; the article does not quantify how common fragmentation is or its cost.
How can connected data improve asset insight?
Combining available operational information can give teams a broader view of asset behavior. Rather than relying only on a fault alert or a scheduled inspection, operators can examine trends, compare current behavior with what is expected, and investigate exceptions that may merit attention.

Data alone does not explain what an anomaly means. Teams need appropriate context, reliable records, and engineering judgment to distinguish a meaningful warning from normal variation or poor-quality information. The aim is not simply to collect more data, but to make existing information useful for operational decisions.

Routine inspection and response to faults remain part of infrastructure maintenance. The proposed addition is to use asset condition, performance trends, and risk to help determine what to inspect or maintain, and when. A developing change could prompt investigation before it affects service; a lower-risk asset may not need the same urgency as one whose failure would have greater consequences.
Rank #3
Mohan suggests that targeted preventive maintenance could reduce unplanned outages and unnecessary site visits, and potentially extend useful asset life. These are proposed benefits, not established outcomes: the article provides no case study, measured comparison, methodology, or effect size. Whether a trend-based approach helps depends on data quality, integration, interpretation, and the ability to act on findings.
How does performance information support investment decisions?
Operational evidence can inform longer-term choices as well as immediate maintenance. Operators can use what they know about asset behavior to consider which assets continue to perform effectively, which may need upgrades, and where limited resources could have the greatest impact.
Rank #4
This does not make an investment decision automatic. Performance information is one input alongside service criticality, risk, resilience needs, cost, and the consequences of deferring work. Its value is in giving decision-makers a more grounded view of asset condition and change, rather than treating every asset as equally urgent or relying on a snapshot alone.

- Data coverage: Check whether the information represents the assets and time periods needed for the decision.
- Data quality: Confirm that records are sufficiently accurate and consistent to support comparisons and trend analysis.
- Context: Interpret changes against expected behavior and operating conditions; an alert is not, by itself, a diagnosis.
- Risk and consequence: Prioritize attention according to both the indication of a problem and the potential impact on service.
- Execution: Ensure teams can investigate, maintain, or upgrade assets when the evidence supports action.
The source for this strategic argument is Mick Mohan’s TechRadar Pro Perspectives article, published 21 August 2026: “Understanding infrastructure performance is becoming more important than ever”. It offers qualitative reasoning rather than measured proof, so operators should treat the described benefits as possibilities to assess in their own environments.
