To fly a plane in GTA 5, identify the controls for throttle, pitch, roll, yaw, and landing gear, then use them in sequence: accelerate, lift the nose, retract the gear, bank gently to turn, and lower the gear before landing. Button labels differ by platform and can be remapped, so check the aircraft controls shown in your game before taking off.

Rockstar’s GTA V game help describes aircraft controls by function rather than as one universal set of buttons. Locate these commands in your control settings or the prompts displayed in-game:

- Throttle: Increases or decreases engine power and helps the plane build or shed speed.
- Pitch: Raises or lowers the nose. Use a measured input to climb or descend.
- Roll: Banks the plane left or right. Banking is the main part of turning.
- Yaw: Moves the nose left or right. Use it for small directional corrections rather than relying on a hard, sustained input.
- Landing gear: Retract it after takeoff and lower it in preparation for landing.

Check your platform’s bindings first
Do not assume a button chart from another platform or control layout matches yours. The official game help cited here uses Xbox One-era prompts, while your game may be on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or a remapped setup. The control functions are consistent concepts; the button labels are not universal.

On PC, Rockstar says controls can be rebound and that the game supports XInput controllers as well as mouse flight. A controller is optional: use the keyboard and mouse if that suits you, or try a compatible controller if those inputs feel more comfortable. Rockstar’s PC settings guidance describes these options but does not provide a complete current flight-key chart.
How to take off
- Confirm the controls. Find the throttle, pitch, and landing-gear commands in your game’s control display.
- Build speed. Apply throttle and let the aircraft accelerate along the runway.
- Lift off smoothly. Once the plane has enough speed to lift, ease the nose upward with pitch. Avoid an abrupt, sustained pull.
- Retract the landing gear. After the aircraft is airborne, use the gear command to raise it.
How to turn and stay in control
Use roll to bank toward the direction you want to go, then ease the plane back toward level flight as it turns. Make small corrections with pitch and yaw as needed. Large or prolonged inputs can make it harder to hold a steady course, so adjust gradually rather than fighting the controls.

How to land
- Line up with the runway. Make your directional corrections early enough to approach in a steady line.
- Descend and slow gradually. Reduce altitude and speed in controlled steps instead of making a sharp dive or sudden change.
- Lower the landing gear. Extend it before touchdown.
- Touch down and maintain direction. Keep the plane aligned as it rolls along the runway, then brake after landing.
Use Flying skill and Flight School to practice
Rockstar’s game help says, “Increasing the Flying Stat will improve the character’s ability to fly all aircraft,” and recommends visiting Pilot School to help improve the stat. It also says higher Flying skill reduces susceptibility to turbulence and supports smoother flight and landings. Practice can therefore help both your control and the character’s in-game ability.

Story Mode Flight School offers structured exercises. A 2026 Gamers.Wiki guide describes it as a 12-lesson course covering tasks such as takeoffs, runway landings, aerobatics, checkpoint flying, helicopter exercises, parachuting, and a final mixed flight. That lesson breakdown is secondary-source guidance, not an official Rockstar lesson list; check the in-game course for the activities available in your version. The same guide distinguishes Story Mode Flight School from GTA Online Flight School, so do not assume their lesson counts or requirements are identical.

The guide also says the relevant lesson aircraft are supplied for those exercises, so you do not need to buy a plane just to attempt them. This detail comes from the secondary guide; confirm the prompt and requirements in your game.
