Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for Steam on Linux. It translates the Windows game components that Steam expects so many Windows-only titles can install and run without a native Linux build. To enable it, open Steam > Settings > Compatibility, turn on Enable Steam Play for supported titles, and, if you want Steam to try games outside Valve’s supported list, also turn on Enable Steam Play for all other titles. For an individual game, use Library > right-click the game > Properties > Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, select a Proton release, and launch.
That setting makes Proton available; it does not guarantee that every game will work. Check the game’s current ProtonDB reports, keep your Vulkan graphics stack current, and treat anti-cheat support as a publisher decision. The guide below explains the setup, version choices, first-launch behavior, troubleshooting, and the limits you should know before buying or installing a Windows-only Steam game.

What Proton does on Linux
Valve describes Proton as a Steam Play compatibility tool based on Wine and additional components. Steam uses it to create a Windows-like environment for a game, connect the game to Linux graphics and audio systems, and provide the files and launch behavior the Windows build expects. You still download the Windows version from Steam; Proton supplies the compatibility layer around it.
For DirectX 9, 10, and 11 games, Proton commonly uses DXVK to translate Direct3D calls to Vulkan. DirectX 12 games use vkd3d-proton for the corresponding translation. Those components are part of Proton’s graphics stack, so a working Vulkan installation is a prerequisite for many modern titles.

Proton is not an emulator and does not make every Windows program compatible. A game can render correctly yet fail in its launcher, refuse a protected multiplayer server, or regress after an update. Compatibility is specific to the game version, Proton build, Linux distribution, graphics driver, hardware, and any launch options or fixes required by the game.
Before enabling Proton: prepare the Linux system
Install the Steam Linux client
Install Steam from your distribution’s supported package source, start it, and sign in. The exact package name and repository vary by distribution. Use the 64-bit Steam client and complete any pending Steam client update before changing compatibility settings.
Update the graphics driver and Vulkan packages
Valve’s Proton requirements guidance warns that newer games can need drivers newer than those included with the latest release of some distributions. Use a current proprietary NVIDIA driver. For AMD and Intel graphics, use recent Mesa Vulkan packages supplied by your distribution. Reboot if the driver package requests it.
Verify Vulkan before changing Proton versions. A missing or broken Vulkan stack can cause several unrelated games to fail, so switching between Proton builds will not fix the underlying problem. If Vulkan tools supplied by your distribution report that no device or driver is available, repair that installation first.
Leave storage and shader-cache space
Proton stores a per-game prefix and Steam may download shader data. Keep free space on the library drive and allow Steam to finish these downloads. An interrupted shader or prefix operation can look like a game crash even when the game itself is compatible.
Enable Steam Play globally
Global Steam Play settings determine whether Steam automatically offers Proton for games in your library.
Rank #2
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Open Steam > Settings (on some desktop environments the menu is labeled Steam > Preferences).
- Select Compatibility in the settings sidebar.
- Turn on Enable Steam Play for supported titles. This lets Steam use Proton for titles Valve has marked as supported.
- If you also want Steam to attempt Windows games outside that supported set, turn on Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
- Accept the change and restart Steam if it asks you to.
- When Steam offers to install a Proton compatibility tool, allow the download to complete.
The supported-titles switch is the conservative starting point. The all-other-titles switch is useful for a large Windows library, but it exposes you to games that may require a particular Proton build, launch option, or community workaround.
Force Proton for one Windows-only game
You can override the global choice for a single title without changing the rest of your library.
- Open Library and locate the game.
- Right-click the game’s name and choose Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose an installed Proton release from the drop-down list.
- Close the Properties window and select Play.
If the required release is not installed, Steam downloads it when you select it or when the game starts. The first launch can take longer while Steam creates the game’s Proton prefix and processes shader data. Let that work finish before repeatedly stopping the game or changing several settings at once.
The same per-game control is available on Steam Deck. Desktop Linux users do not need a Steam Deck: the regular Steam Linux client uses the same Steam Play and Proton model.
Which Proton version should you choose?
Use the current official stable Proton release as your baseline unless a current game report points to another build. A newer version number is not automatically better for every title; a change that fixes one game can introduce a regression in another.

| Official Proton Stable | Most games and a dependable first test | Valve-distributed, tested through Steam’s normal update channel, and the version to return to when experimenting | A newly released game or patch may need a fix that has not reached stable yet |
| Proton Experimental | Recent releases, game updates, or fixes identified in current reports | Receives newer compatibility changes sooner than the stable branch | Changes can be less predictable; a new update can cause a regression |

When a stable build fails, try the current official Proton release first, then Proton Experimental if the game is new or recently updated. Keep at least one official release installed so you have a known baseline. Select GE-Proton only when a recent, game-specific report explains why it is needed; do not install it merely because its version label looks newer.

Use ProtonDB before assuming a game is compatible
ProtonDB is the main community reference for game-specific Proton behavior. Search for the exact Steam app and read several recent reports rather than relying only on the headline rating.
Pay attention to the details that determine whether another user’s result matches yours:
- Proton version or GE-Proton build used.
- Linux distribution and kernel context.
- GPU model and graphics-driver version.
- Whether the report used launch options, a custom prefix, or a workaround.
- Launcher behavior, cut-scenes, controller input, multiplayer, and other features important to you.
- The report date and the game version at the time of testing.
A ProtonDB report is community evidence, not a permanent guarantee. A game update, driver update, or Proton update can change the result. Compare the report with your own hardware and software, and prefer recent entries that describe the same failure or success you are seeing.

Anti-cheat and multiplayer limits
Anti-cheat is controlled by the game publisher, not by a Steam setting you can enable globally. Valve documents integration for Easy Anti-Cheat, but the developer must add the Linux-compatible library and enable Proton support for its title. If that integration is absent, the game may launch in single-player yet refuse to connect to protected multiplayer servers.
Kernel-level or otherwise unsupported anti-cheat systems remain a common reason a multiplayer game cannot join protected servers under Proton. Check the game’s current reports and the publisher’s support information before buying it specifically for Linux multiplayer. Do not assume that successful rendering means competitive or protected online play will work.
Graphics drivers, translation layers, and performance
Why Vulkan matters
Proton’s DXVK and vkd3d-proton paths depend on Vulkan for much of the DirectX translation work. If Vulkan is unavailable, outdated, or selecting the wrong GPU, several games can fail in similar ways. Confirm that the correct GPU and Vulkan driver are active before diagnosing an individual game.

What to expect on the first run
Steam may create a new prefix, compile or download shader data, and perform one-time setup. The window can remain blank or appear idle during this process. The duration depends on the game, storage speed, CPU, GPU, and amount of shader data; there is no fixed time that applies to every title.

Translation adds work, but the practical result varies widely. A well-supported DirectX 11 title may perform close to its Windows behavior, while a game with an unusual launcher, extensive shader compilation, or a DirectX 12 feature that is still changing can behave differently. Compare frame pacing, stutter, input, audio, and loading—not just the frame-rate counter—when deciding whether a game is usable.

Change one variable at a time and record what you changed. That makes it possible to undo a workaround and identify whether the driver, Proton build, launch option, or game files caused the failure.
1. Confirm the basic installation
- Check that Steam finished downloading the game and its Proton tool.
- Use Steam’s file-verification command in the game’s Properties if an update was interrupted or files may be damaged.
- Make sure the library drive is mounted and writable.
- Close overlays, injectors, or other tools you added temporarily; test the unmodified launch first.
2. Test the official Proton builds
Open Properties > Compatibility and test the current stable Proton release. If the title is new or a recent update broke it, test Proton Experimental. Launch after each change and allow the first-run prefix and shader work to complete.
3. Update the Vulkan stack
If several unrelated games show a black screen, crash immediately, or report missing graphics components, stop changing Proton versions and update the NVIDIA driver or AMD/Intel Mesa Vulkan packages. Reboot when required, then test again.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
5. Match fixes to the report date
When a ProtonDB entry suggests a DLL override, environment variable, or other workaround, check the Proton version, driver, and date in that entry. Do not copy an old fix blindly: later Proton builds may include the fix, or the old workaround may now cause a crash.
6. Interpret common symptoms
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next controlled test |
|---|---|---|
| Steam shows “Playing,” then returns to Play | Proton build, missing Vulkan, damaged files, or an incompatible launcher | Verify files, test official stable Proton, then Experimental, and check recent game reports |
| Black screen or missing video | Graphics driver, video codec path, or an outdated workaround | Update Vulkan drivers, remove stale launch options, and compare recent reports |
| Game renders but protected multiplayer will not connect | Publisher anti-cheat integration | Check whether the developer enabled Proton support; changing Proton versions cannot add missing server-side integration |
| Severe stutter on the first launch | Shader processing or cache creation | Allow setup to finish, then test again before changing versions |
| Works after an update, then fails | Game, driver, or Proton regression | Compare the update date with current reports and test the previous working official Proton branch if it remains installed |
Using GE-Proton safely
GE-Proton is an unofficial Proton-compatible build. Its project documentation uses the same Steam workflow: install the build, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility page, enable the forced compatibility-tool option, and select the GE-Proton entry.
Use it as a targeted workaround, not as a universal replacement for official Proton. A current report may identify a GE-specific media component or patch that solves a particular game. If no such evidence exists, start with official stable or Experimental Proton. Keep an official build available so you can separate a game problem from a custom-build problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen Proton is the wrong solution
Proton is designed for Windows games delivered through Steam. It is not a guarantee for non-Steam launchers, kernel-dependent software, or applications that require Windows-only services. A native Linux version, a publisher-supported cloud option, or a dual-boot Windows installation may be more appropriate when a title depends on unsupported anti-cheat, proprietary drivers, or a launcher that does not function through Proton.
Likewise, do not judge a game solely by whether its executable opens. If you need voice chat, video playback, mods, controller support, or protected online servers, verify those features separately in recent reports.
Quick Recap
A repeatable decision process
- Identify the exact Steam app. Confirm that the game is the Windows build you intend to run.
- Read recent ProtonDB reports. Note the Proton build, driver, distribution, launch options, and features that worked.
- Prepare Vulkan. Install current NVIDIA proprietary drivers or recent AMD/Intel Mesa Vulkan packages, then verify Vulkan works.
- Enable Steam Play. Turn on the supported-titles setting globally; add the all-other-titles setting if you accept experimental coverage.
- Start with official stable Proton. Force it per game only when you need to override the automatic choice.
- Test one change at a time. Use Experimental for a recent fix, or GE-Proton only when a current report gives a specific reason.
- Check online-service requirements. Rendering success does not establish anti-cheat or protected multiplayer support.
- Keep a working baseline. Record the Proton version and launch options that work so you can recover after a game, driver, or Proton update.
