How to Enable Notifications for an SCCM Package Deployment

Configuration Manager has client-wide and deployment-level notification behavior, but Microsoft’s package example does not document a separate package-specific notification switch.

To enable a notification for an SCCM package deployment, check the deployment wizard’s User Experience page and the Configuration Manager client’s notification settings. Microsoft’s package-and-program example confirms the User Experience page exists, but it does not document a separate package-specific “notify users” switch. The client-wide setting Show notifications for new deployments can display a notice for a deployment available for less than a week; it appears each time the Configuration Manager client agent starts, not necessarily at the deployment’s scheduled time.

How do I enable a notification for an SCCM package deployment?

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, open the package deployment workflow and review its User Experience page. Microsoft’s documented package-and-program example uses this page for installation outside maintenance windows, restart behavior, and write-filter handling. It does not list a standalone package notification control, so verify the available options in your installed Configuration Manager version rather than assuming an application-specific option also applies to packages. 2. For a client-wide notice about recently available deployments, review client settings for Show notifications for new deployments. This setting covers deployments available for less than a week, and the client displays the notice each time its agent starts. It is not a per-package control for sending an immediate toast at a particular scheduled time. See Microsoft’s Configuration Manager client settings documentation.

  3. Check what type of deployment users receive. In Microsoft’s application-deployment guidance, an available deployment lets the user choose when to install, while a required deployment is installed according to its schedule. The application User Experience page also has notification choices, but those documented application controls should not be treated as confirmed package controls. See Microsoft’s application deployment guidance.

Which notification settings apply, and to what?

Setting or behavior Scope and effect What to know
Show notifications for new deployments Client-wide; notices deployments available for less than a week. The notice appears each time the client agent starts. It does not establish a package-specific notification at a chosen deployment time. Microsoft client settings.
User Experience notification choices Documented for application deployments; controls Software Center and user notification behavior. Microsoft says an available application deployment cannot be hidden in Software Center with all notifications suppressed. Do not assume identical choices are available for packages. Microsoft application deployment guidance.
Dialog instead of a toast Documented for required application deployments with a future deadline. The dialog option applies only to required deployments; it is not verified here as a package setting. Microsoft user notification guidance.
Software-update UserNotification values Software update deployments. The PowerShell reference lists DisplayAll, DisplaySoftwareCenterOnly, and HideAll. These values describe software-update deployment behavior, not the package wizard’s control. Microsoft Set-CMSoftwareUpdateDeployment reference.

Why might the notification not appear?

Configuration Manager’s client and Software Center can display notifications to users signed in to Windows, but Windows notification conditions can affect whether they see them. Microsoft notes that Windows 11 enables Focus assist for the first hour after a user signs in for the first time by default; Software Center notifications are suppressed during that quiet period. If a user misses a notice, check the relevant client and deployment settings, then check Windows notification and Focus assist behavior. See Microsoft’s user notifications documentation.
