Affinity by Canva is the biggest change for people seeking a free Photoshop alternative: Canva says the combined photo, vector and page-layout app is free, while some Canva AI Studio features require a premium account. For other needs, consider GIMP for general image editing, Photopea for browser-based editing and PSD workflows, or Krita for digital painting. These tools serve different jobs; none should be assumed to reproduce Photoshop’s entire workflow.
Which free Photoshop alternative should you choose?
Start with the work you need to do, not a ranking. A photo editor, a painting program and a RAW developer solve different problems. Before moving a project, check that your operating system is supported, that the features you need are included at no cost, and that your own files open and export as expected.

Affinity by Canva: the broadest new free option
Canva announced an all-new Affinity app that combines photo editing, vector design and page-layout tools, and says new users can create a free Canva account to download it. Canva described the app as free; that applies to the core app, not automatically to every connected feature.

What is free, and what is premium?
Canva says Canva AI Studio features—including Generative Fill, Expand & Edit and Remove Background—are for Canva premium account holders. If one of those tools is essential to your workflow, check the current account terms rather than assuming it comes with the free app.
Check your files and platform before switching
Canva’s announcement lists PSD support, but that alone does not establish that every Photoshop file, effect or round-trip edit will behave identically. Open representative projects and inspect layers, text, masks and exports before relying on the app for a deadline. The announcement described Mac and Windows availability and iPad as “coming soon”; because that wording may be outdated, check the live product page for current platform availability.

GIMP: a general-purpose free and open-source editor
GIMP is a candidate when you want a general image editor without a paid license. Its project site is the best place to check current downloads and features. A comparison source characterizes its learning curve as a consideration, so allow time to get comfortable with its interface rather than expecting Photoshop habits to transfer unchanged.

Photopea: browser-first editing and PSD evaluation
Photopea identifies itself as an online photo editor, making it a candidate when you want to work in a browser. It is also worth evaluating if you need to open or edit PSD files, but do not assume complete Photoshop compatibility. Test your own layered documents, fonts, effects and export requirements before moving a project.
Krita: choose it for painting, not as a universal photo editor
Krita’s project describes it as a free, open-source painting program. Its listed tools include multiple brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers and animation tools, which make it a better fit for illustration and digital painting than for workflows centered on photo retouching.
