Use Samsung Smart Switch to create a restorable backup of a Galaxy phone on a Windows PC or Mac. Install Smart Switch on both devices, connect the phone with a data-capable USB cable, approve access on the phone, then choose Backup in the computer app. If you only need a few photos or documents, copy those files over USB instead—but that is a file transfer, not a full device backup.
Back up a Galaxy phone with Smart Switch
- Check compatibility and install Smart Switch. Install Samsung Smart Switch on the Galaxy phone and computer. Samsung’s US compatibility page lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later, and says Chromebooks are not compatible. Requirements can change, so check Samsung’s current Smart Switch compatibility information before installing.
- Make room on the computer. Check available storage before starting; the required space depends on what is being backed up, and Samsung does not publish a single size that applies to every phone.
- Connect and authorize the phone. Unlock the Galaxy and connect it with a USB cable that supports data transfer. Tap Allow on the phone if prompted. A charge-only cable will not transfer files.
- Start the backup. Open Smart Switch on the computer and select Backup. Samsung says Select all is selected by default, but you can deselect categories or items you do not want included. Review the selection, then start the backup and wait for completion.
- Safely disconnect. Eject the phone from the computer before unplugging it.
Samsung’s PC backup instructions describe Smart Switch as a way to back up a Galaxy phone using different storage options.

What Smart Switch can—and cannot—back up
Samsung lists contacts, schedules, messages, photos and videos, music, documents, call logs, some device settings and layouts, apps, and some Galaxy app data among the content Smart Switch can transfer. The exact categories available can vary. Samsung warns that unsupported content may not transfer, and that app data stored in private storage cannot be backed up. Some backup content also cannot be viewed on the computer even though it may be restored to a phone. Treat Smart Switch as a broad device backup, not a complete copy of every app and private file. See Samsung’s backup and restore guidance for the current details.
Restore a backup to a Galaxy phone
- Connect the new or reset Galaxy phone to the computer and approve access if prompted.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer and select Restore.
- Choose the backup you want to use, select the categories to restore, and follow the on-screen prompts.
Samsung supports restoring selected categories, so you do not necessarily have to restore every item in a backup. The available content depends on what the backup contains and what the receiving device supports.

Copy selected files to a Windows PC or Mac
For a handful of accessible files—such as photos, videos, or documents—you can connect the phone and copy them directly without using Smart Switch. Samsung’s Galaxy backup and restore guide describes USB file transfers for Windows and Mac.
- Unlock the phone and connect it to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- Approve the connection on the phone. If needed, open the USB notification and choose Transferring files or MTP.
- On Windows: Open File Explorer, select the Galaxy device, find the folders or files you need, and copy them into a folder on the PC.
- On Mac: Use the Finder transfer instructions provided by Samsung for your device and macOS version.
- Eject the phone safely after copying, then unplug it.
This method copies files the phone makes accessible over USB. It does not create a Smart Switch backup and does not provide Smart Switch’s category-based restore.

Which method should you use?
| Method | Best for | What it saves | How you get it back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Switch on a PC or Mac | A broad, restorable Galaxy backup | Supported categories, including many personal files and some settings or app data | Use Restore in Smart Switch and choose the categories |
| USB file copy | A few accessible folders or media files | Only the files you select and copy | Copy the files back manually; it is not a device restore |
Other backup options
Samsung also lists Samsung Cloud, OneDrive, and Google One as Galaxy backup or synchronization options. These can provide additional cloud protection, but they are not the same as a backup stored on your PC, and their coverage is not identical. Check the service and your device’s settings to confirm which data it includes. Samsung’s overview of Galaxy backup methods describes the available approaches.
