To keep a player’s items after death, stop the Hytale server, open the affected world’s config.json, set the death option ItemsLossMode to None, set the item-loss and durability-loss percentage fields to 0, validate the JSON, and restart. Because the setting’s documented scope and exact placement are not confirmed by Hytale, test the result in every world you operate after restarting.

What “keep inventory” changes in Hytale
Hytale handles death penalties through a setting named ItemsLossMode. Third-party server guides describe three accepted values:

The percentage controls matter when the mode is Configured. Hosting guides that describe a full keep-everything setup also set both the item-loss percentage and durability-loss percentage to zero. Use the field labels already present in your file rather than inventing new names; exact property names beyond ItemsLossMode are not confirmed by official Hytale documentation.
Important limitations before you edit
- There is no confirmed official reference for this key. The procedure is based on hosting-provider guides and a community mod listing, not an Hytale-published configuration reference.
- Scope is disputed. One hosting guide says the server reads the setting at startup and applies it globally. Another says the value is read per world. Treat each world’s file as independent until you test your own installation.
- Placement may vary by build. Guides agree that the death configuration belongs with the world’s gameplay configuration, but they disagree about whether the block is placed below the
GameplayConfigentry or immediately after a line such as"GameplayConfig": "Default". - Updates can change the schema. Recheck the file after a Hytale update, especially if the setting stops working or the server generates a new configuration.
Back up the world and stop the server
Do not edit a live configuration. A running server can rewrite config.json during shutdown or while saving, replacing your changes or leaving a partially written file.

- Use your host’s console or control panel to choose Stop. For a self-hosted instance, stop the Hytale server process using the method you normally use to shut it down.
- Wait until the panel reports that the process has exited. Do not rely only on a disconnected console window.
- Create a copy of the world folder or at least its
config.json. Name the copy with the date so you can restore the prior settings. - Record which world you are changing. If your server has several worlds, repeat the process for each one that should use keep inventory.
Find the correct world configuration file
The usual location is a world-specific file under universe/worlds/. A typical path looks like:
universe/worlds/<world-name>/config.jsonThe angle-bracketed portion represents the actual folder name; do not type the brackets. Providers expose this path differently:

- Web control panel: open the file manager or Files page, enter
universe, thenworlds, select the intended world, and openconfig.json. - FTP or SFTP: connect to the server’s installation directory and follow the same
universe/worlds/<world-name>/config.jsonpath. - Local host: open the Hytale server directory and navigate to the world folder. If you changed the server’s data directory, start from that custom location rather than assuming the default.
Do not edit a similarly named global template, a backup, or a different world’s file. If you cannot identify the active world folder, start the server once, note the world name shown by the console or panel, stop it again, and then match that name to the directory.
Edit the death setting safely
1. Preserve the existing JSON structure
Open the selected config.json in a plain-text editor. Keep every existing gameplay entry unless you have a separate reason to change it. JSON is sensitive to commas, quotation marks, braces, and capitalization.

2. Locate the gameplay configuration area
Search for GameplayConfig. The guides reviewed for this setting describe a Death block associated with that section. Depending on the generated file, the block may need to be inserted immediately below the gameplay entry or immediately after a line like "GameplayConfig": "Default". Follow the surrounding indentation and object structure already used in your file.
3. Add or edit the mode value
If a death block already exists, edit its existing ItemsLossMode value. Do not create a second property with the same name. If the block is absent, add one in the location used by the file’s gameplay configuration. The essential fragment is:

Your editor must place it inside the appropriate JSON object, with a comma before or after it when other properties share that object.
4. Set both percentage controls to zero
In the same death configuration, find the fields that control item-loss percentage and durability-loss percentage. Set each value to the number 0, not the string "0". If your generated file does not contain those fields, do not guess at property names. Save the mode first, then compare the resulting file with the schema generated by your current server build or ask your host which labels it supports.

5. Save without changing encoding or extension
Save the file as config.json. Do not save it as rich text, append .txt, or let an editor convert quotation marks to typographic quotes. Keep the original capitalization of ItemsLossMode and None.
Validate the file before restarting
A single missing comma can prevent the server from loading the world. Validate the edited file while the server is still stopped.

python -m json.tool config.json. Successful formatting output indicates valid JSON; a line and column in an error message identifies where to look. - Editor validation: a code editor with JSON support should show a syntax error before you upload or save the file.
- Host panel: some file managers include a JSON checker or show a parse error when the server starts. Use that feedback, but still keep your backup.
Validation checks syntax, not whether Hytale recognizes a particular key. A file can be valid JSON and still ignore a misspelled or unsupported setting, which is why the in-game test is required.
Restart and test in-game
- Start the server from the control panel or your normal launch command.
- Watch the startup log for configuration or world-loading errors. If the server fails to start, stop it, restore the backup, and correct the JSON before trying again.
- Join the exact world whose file you edited.
- Move a low-value item into your inventory, note its durability and location, and deliberately trigger a safe death.
- Respawn and check whether the item remains and whether its durability changed.
- Repeat the test in every world where keep inventory is expected. A successful result in one world does not prove that another world uses the same scope.
Use a controlled test rather than risking valuable equipment. Remove temporary test items afterward so the test does not alter normal play.

Keep-inventory, partial-loss, and hardcore configurations
The same death settings can support several rule sets. Choose one deliberately and keep the percentage controls consistent with the selected mode.

The percentage values do not override None or All; they are intended for the Configured mode. If your test contradicts that description, keep the backup, record the Hytale version and host, and treat the behavior as build-specific.
When the setting does not work
The file keeps reverting
The most common cause is editing while the server is running. Stop it completely, edit the file, validate it, and start it again. Some panels also regenerate files when you change a server preset; make the manual edit after selecting the preset and keep a backup.
The server will not start
Restore the saved copy first. Then inspect the last edited line for a missing comma, an extra comma before a closing brace, mismatched braces, or smart quotes. Run python -m json.tool config.json before another restart.
Items still drop after a successful restart
- Confirm that the property is spelled exactly
ItemsLossModeand that the value is exactlyNone, including capitalization. - Check that you edited the active world, not a template or another world folder.
- Make sure an existing death block was edited rather than creating a duplicate key.
- Review the server log for an “unknown,” “ignored,” or schema-related property warning.
- Test again with a newly joined player if permissions, profiles, or a gameplay plugin could be caching rules.
One world keeps items and another does not
This is consistent with the per-world interpretation reported by some providers. Apply the configuration to each world and test each one. If the same file behaves globally on your host, document that result for your administrators so later edits do not assume the opposite scope.
Durability changes even though items remain
Keeping an item and preserving its durability are separate outcomes. Reopen the death block and set the durability-loss percentage field to 0, validate the file, restart, and repeat the controlled test. Do not assume that an inventory-preservation mode automatically prevents durability loss on every build.
An update removes or ignores the block
Stop the server and compare the regenerated file with your backup. Hytale may change configuration names or placement during development. Reapply only the properties supported by the new file, then test before allowing normal play. The exact key name and placement have not been officially confirmed for every 2026 release.
Using a mod instead
A community project listed on CurseForge under the name “Keep Inventory Fixed” is described as removing death penalties. Its author warns that an earlier version could break the game by overwriting configuration assets and says a rewritten version was published. That history makes a direct, backed-up edit to the world configuration the safer first approach when the native setting works.
If you still choose a mod, check that its release supports your Hytale build, install it on a copy of the server, and test a death before deploying it to players. Keep the native configuration backup so you can remove the mod and return to a known state if the world fails to load.
Administration and rollback checklist
- Stop the server before every configuration edit.
- Back up the world folder and retain the previous
config.json. - Change only the death-related values required for your rule set.
- Validate JSON syntax before startup.
- Read the startup log for parse or unknown-property warnings.
- Test item retention and durability in each world.
- Record the Hytale build, host, world name, and date of the successful test.
- After updates, compare the generated schema with your backup rather than blindly replacing the new file.
To roll back, stop the server, restore the backed-up config.json (or remove only the death block you added), validate it, and restart. Confirm normal death behavior with a controlled test before reopening the server.
What is confirmed and what remains uncertain
Hosting guides consistently identify ItemsLossMode and the values None, All, and Configured. They also describe zero item-loss and durability-loss percentages for a full keep-inventory setup and place the file under each world’s config.json. However, no Hytale-published documentation for this key was located, and providers disagree about global versus per-world scope and the precise insertion point of the death block. Verify behavior on your server after every update instead of treating a guide as a permanent contract.
