How to Host a RAGE:MP Server in 2026: Shutdown Status, Legacy Files, and FiveM Migration

You cannot start a new, supported RAGE:MP server in 2026. The RAGE:MP team stopped accepting new community servers, discontinued public access to its server toolkit, closed public listings on June 1, 2026, and scheduled platform end-of-support and backend shutdown for August 31, 2026. Those deadlines had passed by October 13, 2026. Existing operators were asked to wind down and migrate to FiveM, with Cfx identified as a source of transition support.

The 2026 answer: RAGE:MP hosting is no longer an actionable new project

The decisive information is a status change, not a different installation command. In its May 25, 2026 community announcement, the RAGE:MP team said it would no longer accept new community servers and had discontinued public access to the server toolkit. The same announcement set June 1, 2026 as the date for closing public listings and August 31, 2026 as the date for platform end-of-support and backend shutdown. Both dates had passed at the time of this article’s October 13, 2026 status check.

The team’s instruction to operators was explicit: “We are asking all server owners to wind down their operations and migrate to FiveM.” The announcement also said Cfx would offer support for transition questions. That is a migration direction, not a promise of automatic conversion, a one-click importer, or an endorsement of a particular hosting company.

Read the full notice at the official RAGE:MP announcement. Because a later official correction could change the situation, check that notice before relying on any claim about remaining private files or services.

What changed, and when

Event Date or status Practical meaning
Final outreach announcement posted May 25, 2026 The team announced the end of the community-server program and directed owners toward migration.
New community servers No longer accepted A new project could not enter the supported public-server ecosystem.
Public server toolkit Public access discontinued Old download and updater instructions do not establish that the files are still obtainable.
Public-listing closure June 1, 2026 Relying on the public listing for discovery is no longer a current deployment plan.
Platform end-of-support and backend shutdown August 31, 2026 The announced service deadline had already passed by October 13, 2026.

These are deadlines from the team’s announcement, not performance measurements or a guarantee about what an individual former server process may do on a private network. The available information does not establish which private files, locally cached components, or unofficial processes might still launch after the backend shutdown, so it would be misleading to present such a setup as a supported public service.

Can you still make a RAGE:MP server?

For a new public server

No supported route is documented. The combination of rejected new community servers, withdrawn public toolkit access, closed public listings, and the passed backend-shutdown date means buying a more powerful computer, opening router ports, or finding a host cannot restore the announced RAGE:MP service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an old local copy

You may encounter an archived server directory or an old guide that describes launching a process. That is historical material. It does not prove that server authentication, public discovery, client-package delivery, or other backend-dependent functions still work, and it does not create a supported community server.

For an existing operator

The official direction is to wind down RAGE:MP operations and move the project to FiveM. Preserve your code and data first, then treat the move as a platform migration that requires review and testing. The announcement identifies Cfx as a place to ask transition questions, but it does not state that migration is automatic or that every RAGE:MP resource has a compatible equivalent.

What the old RAGE:MP setup guides actually described

The RAGE Multiplayer wiki remains useful for identifying legacy files and terminology. Its server setup guide covers Windows and Linux, while separate pages document settings and development. None of those pages supersedes the later shutdown announcement.

Windows procedure in the historical guide

The Windows instructions assume that the client updater can obtain server files. They recommend installing the latest Visual C++ Redistributable, switching the client configuration to the server prerelease channel, running the updater, extracting the resulting server_files directory, restoring the normal client configuration, updating again, and launching ragemp-server.exe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That sequence explains why an archived tutorial may tell you to change channels or run an updater. It should not be followed as a current acquisition method: the team later announced that public access to the server toolkit had been discontinued. If an old copy is already in your possession, launching it is an experiment with unsupported software, not a current hosting recipe.

Linux procedure in the historical guide

The Linux instructions describe downloading and extracting the Linux server files, making the server executable, and running ragemp-server. The wiki also shows systemd as an option for keeping the process running in the background.

Those commands describe how the legacy binary was operated on Linux. They do not address the post-August-31, 2026 backend status, public listing, or a supported way to obtain the files today.

Legacy ports and network settings (historical reference only)

If you are auditing an old deployment or documenting what a previous installation used, the wiki’s documented defaults were as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Documented legacy value Meaning in the old documentation
Server access port 22005 Primary port used for server access.
HTTP client-package port 22006 by default The port following the server port, used for HTTP hosting of client packages.
bind 127.0.0.1 Default network address to which the server binds.
port 22005 Default server port in the settings reference.
maxplayers 100 Documented default player limit, not a tested capacity recommendation.
gamemode Freeroam Documented default game mode.
stream-distance 500.0 Documented default streaming distance.

The wiki advised forwarding the required ports on the router and allowing them through the firewall. In that historical configuration, forwarding only the game port while blocking the HTTP package port could prevent clients from receiving resources. Conversely, opening ports does not revive a shut backend or make an unsupported server publicly discoverable.

The settings reference also warns that enable-http-security can cause a resource-download problem in at least the RAGE 1.1 behavior it discusses. Do not copy that setting blindly from an old configuration; preserve the exact version context when diagnosing an archived installation. See the server settings reference.

How the old project was organized

For migration planning, the directory layout is more useful than the obsolete launch command. The development guide describes these typical locations:

  • client_packages for resources sent to and run on the client.
  • packages for server-side resources.
  • maps for map files.
  • plugins for custom DLL plugins.
  • conf.json for server configuration.

The guide describes Node.js development and points to C# as another scripting option. A migration inventory should record which resources use each language, which files are client-only, which are server-only, what database or web service they call, and whether a plugin depends on native RAGE:MP APIs. The sources do not provide a complete RAGE:MP-to-FiveM conversion procedure, so these categories are an audit checklist rather than a promise of source compatibility. Read the development guide for the legacy terminology.

A practical migration plan for existing operators

1. Freeze and preserve the old project

  1. Stop making changes directly on the only copy of the server.
  2. Create offline copies of conf.json, client_packages, packages, maps, plugins, database dumps, environment files, certificates, and any deployment scripts.
  3. Write down the last known RAGE:MP version, enabled resources, scheduled jobs, external APIs, domains, ports, and administrator accounts.
  4. Remove secrets from any archive that will be shared with a developer or migration consultant, and record where the redacted values must be restored.

2. Inventory behavior, not just files

For every gameplay feature, describe its player-facing behavior, commands, permissions, events, persistence requirements, UI, and external dependencies. A folder name alone does not reveal whether a script relies on a client event, a server event, a native plugin, or a specific database schema. Mark features as essential, optional, or safe to retire so the first FiveM milestone is manageable.

3. Separate portable assets from platform code

Textures, models, map source files, JSON data, SQL schemas, localization text, and design documents may be reusable after format and license checks. Network handlers, entity management, authentication, voice integration, resource manifests, client/server events, and native plugins are platform-specific until proven otherwise. Keep both the original asset and any converted derivative so a failed conversion is reversible.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

4. Build a small FiveM proof of concept

Create a minimal test server on FiveM and port one contained feature first. Verify that it starts, loads its resources, creates the required database records, and behaves correctly for more than one connected client. Do not assume a RAGE:MP package can simply be copied into a FiveM resources directory; the two platforms expose different APIs, resource structures, and runtime expectations.

5. Test operational requirements

  • Confirm the intended server region and measure latency from the actual player communities.
  • Test backups by restoring a database and the resource set to a clean environment.
  • Check log retention, administrator permissions, update procedures, and rollback steps.
  • Exercise failure cases such as a missing resource, a failed database connection, and a full or corrupted backup.
  • Run a closed acceptance test before announcing a public opening.

6. Retire RAGE:MP deliberately

When the FiveM build is stable, publish a clear player notice, preserve an archival copy for legal and historical needs, revoke unused credentials, remove obsolete port-forwarding rules, and shut down old processes. Keep a dated export of player data only as long as your privacy, retention, and game-community obligations allow.

What to do if you discover an archived server

Do not immediately place an old executable on an internet-facing machine. First copy it to isolated storage, record its origin and apparent version, and scan the archive with your normal security tools. Inspect startup scripts and configuration for hard-coded credentials, remote download URLs, administrator tokens, and database connection strings. An old plugin or package can have permissions and dependencies that are no longer understood by its original maintainer.

If you only want to inspect code, work from a duplicate and remove secrets before sharing it. If you need to demonstrate the old project to former players, keep the demonstration private and make clear that it is not an official public server. Do not promise account recovery, public listing, client downloads, or reliable persistence merely because the process reaches a running state.

How to answer the ports question in 2026

The historical answer was server port 22005 and, by default, the following port, 22006, for HTTP hosting of client packages. The wiki advised forwarding the ports at the router and allowing them through the host firewall. That information is useful when reading an old conf.json or troubleshooting a preserved lab copy.

It is not a current deployment requirement. The announced toolkit withdrawal and backend shutdown make port forwarding ineffective as a way to create a supported public service. If an old machine is no longer needed, close the firewall exceptions and delete the router rules rather than leaving an abandoned process reachable from the internet.

Infrastructure, cost, and ownership decisions for FiveM

The cited RAGE:MP references provide no current CPU, memory, storage, bandwidth, or player-capacity guidance, and they provide no price list. Therefore, there is no defensible hardware budget or “minimum server” specification to quote for a new RAGE:MP deployment. A computer, router, or disk purchase cannot restore the discontinued backend.

For a FiveM replacement, calculate the complete recurring cost instead of comparing a headline monthly server price. Include the server or virtual machine, database, backup storage, extra transfer, monitoring, domains, optional migration labor, and any support or security service. Ask whether you can download and restore backups, move regions, export your database, and cancel without losing your resources. A self-managed machine may provide more control but leaves patching, firewalling, backups, and incident response with you; a managed host may reduce administration while imposing plan limits or export constraints.

A migration worksheet that prevents surprises

Area Record before rewriting Acceptance question
Gameplay Commands, permissions, events, inventories, jobs, and progression Can a test player complete the same critical flow?
Data Tables, migrations, identifiers, backups, and retention rules Can a clean environment restore the latest backup?
Client UI, controls, downloads, models, maps, and localization Do clients receive every required asset without errors?
Server Scheduled tasks, external APIs, logs, and administrator roles Are failures visible and recoverable by more than one operator?
Operations Domains, certificates, ports, deployment scripts, and rollback steps Can you redeploy from documented instructions?

Use the worksheet to choose a first milestone. A small, working feature gives you evidence about API differences and data conversion; attempting to port every resource at once makes it harder to identify which dependency failed.

Common mistakes when following an old tutorial

“I only need to open ports 22005 and 22006.”

Those numbers are historical defaults from the wiki. Port forwarding cannot replace the discontinued toolkit or the shut backend. It can also expose an abandoned process unnecessarily, so remove old forwarding rules when the project is retired.

“The updater will give me the latest server files.”

The old Windows workflow depended on a client updater and a prerelease channel. Public toolkit access was later discontinued, so an archived guide cannot establish that this acquisition path still exists.

“A copied resource should run on FiveM.”

RAGE:MP and FiveM are different platforms. Treat every script, plugin, event, UI component, and database integration as something to verify or adapt. Start with a small proof of concept instead of promising a direct copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The documented maximum is a performance guarantee.”

maxplayers: 100 and stream-distance: 500.0 are documented defaults, not measurements of what a modern machine can sustain. The available references provide no current CPU, RAM, bandwidth, or player-capacity guidance.

“Any remaining private process means the service is back.”

The announced backend shutdown and end-of-support date are separate from whether a binary happens to start on a private machine. Do not advertise a private experiment as a supported public RAGE:MP server.

Bottom line for 2026

Do not spend money on hardware, port-forwarding, or hosting in an attempt to launch a new RAGE:MP server. The team’s announced deadlines have passed, new community servers were no longer accepted, and public toolkit access was discontinued. If you operate an existing project, preserve its files and data, inventory its resources, and plan a tested migration to FiveM. Use the official announcement and Cfx’s transition-support channel for current questions, while treating every old RAGE:MP setup page as historical documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create a new RAGE:MP server in 2026?

Not as a supported public project. The RAGE:MP team stopped accepting new community servers, discontinued public toolkit access, closed public listings on June 1, 2026, and announced backend shutdown and end-of-support for August 31, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What ports did RAGE:MP use?

The historical wiki documented port 22005 for server access and 22006 by default for HTTP hosting of client packages. Those values are useful for auditing old files, not for reviving the discontinued service.

Can an archived RAGE:MP server still run privately?

An old binary may launch on a private machine, but the available status notice does not establish which backend-dependent functions remain. A local process is unsupported and should not be advertised as a public service.

How do I move a RAGE:MP server to FiveM?

There is no documented one-click conversion. Preserve the old project, inventory client and server resources, databases, maps, plugins, and external dependencies, then port one contained feature to a FiveM test server and verify it with multiple clients before expanding.

Will my RAGE:MP scripts work on FiveM?

Do not assume they will. Runtime APIs, resource structures, events, plugins, UI systems, and native integrations differ. Reusable assets still need format, license, and behavior checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Cfx provide automatic migration or a specific host?

The announcement identifies Cfx as a source of transition support for questions. It does not promise automatic migration or endorse a commercial hosting provider, plan, or affiliate.

How much does a RAGE:MP server cost to host now?

There is no meaningful current hosting budget because the announced platform service has ended. For a FiveM replacement, include the server, database, backups, storage, transfer, domains, security, support, and migration labor in the recurring-cost calculation.

Should I buy better hardware to run RAGE:MP?

No purchase can restore the announced backend or toolkit. The cited legacy references also provide no current CPU, RAM, bandwidth, or player-capacity recommendations.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A new supported RAGE:MP server is not an actionable 2026 project. Preserve any existing code and data, close unnecessary network exposure, and migrate deliberately to FiveM after testing resources, databases, operations, backups, and costs.
