You can run a persistent dedicated server for The Forest on Windows with the separate Steam dedicated-server tool (app 556450), not the regular game app (242760). Install it from Steam’s Tools section or with SteamCMD, launch it once to generate Server.cfg, configure the world and save settings, and forward the server ports if players will connect from outside your home network.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted The Forest servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The procedure below is based on the detailed Steam Community tutorial last updated January 23, 2019 for game version v1.07. SteamDB’s October 13, 2026 record still identifies the tool as a free, released Windows download, but lists a public-branch build from January 21, 2019. Treat option names and defaults as guide-era values: inspect the files downloaded to your machine before relying on any setting.

A dedicated server is a separate program that keeps the game world running without a player hosting from the normal game client. The server process owns the save, accepts connections, and can remain online while different players join and leave.
Steam uses two identifiers that are easy to confuse:
#1 Best Overall
- Strategic 2-Player Trick-Taking: Master the art of winning just enough tricks without overcommitting, using clever card play and tactical decision-making to outmaneuver your opponent
- New Module Variations: Three game modules (special cards, goal cards, poison cards) offer endless strategic combinations, keeping gameplay fresh and exciting for repeated plays
- Premium Deluxe Components: Foil-stamped cards, all-new fairy-tale illustrations, and acrylic scoring tokens deliver a visually stunning and tactile experience that enhances every game
- Quick 30-Minute Gameplay: Perfect for busy couples seeking quality time together, delivering strategic depth and meaningful competition in a compact, elegant format
- Complete Game Package: Includes 33 base cards, nine special cards, 16 goal cards, three poison cards, two reference cards, 17 scoring tokens, and comprehensive rulebook
- Dedicated-server tool: Steam app
556450. - The Forest game: Steam app
242760, used when creating the server’s Steam game-server account.
Endnight introduced the tool in an April 2017 announcement and described dedicated-server support as experimental at that time. That historical warning explains why a configuration mistake can prevent startup; it is not evidence that the 2026 build has a particular defect. A June 2018 patch announcement also told operators to restart and update servers after game patches and noted incompatibility with Oxide. Those are dated advisories, not a current promise about every future patch.
Check the 2026 compatibility picture
Before choosing a host, set expectations about what is and is not current:

- SteamDB’s record checked October 13, 2026 lists app 556450 as released, free to download, and supported on Windows. Its public-branch build timestamp is January 21, 2019.
- A SteamDB record update in September 2026 does not mean that a new server executable was released. The dated build timestamp is the relevant compatibility clue.
- The documented procedure is therefore a practical baseline, not a freshly tested 2026 walkthrough. If the installed directory uses different filenames, keys, or launch arguments, follow the files shipped with your build.
The evidence establishes Windows support. It does not establish a currently maintained native Linux server. A community Docker/Wine project documents a Linux-container approach, but its repository was archived on March 19, 2026. You can experiment with that route if you understand Wine, containers, networking, and backups, but do not treat it as an officially supported Linux release.
Choose where the server will run
There are two practical models. Self-hosting gives you direct control but makes you responsible for the machine, network, updates, and recovery. Managed hosting moves those chores to a provider, usually in exchange for a recurring fee and less control over the underlying system.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted Windows machine | Managed game-server host |
|---|---|---|
| Machine maintenance | You install Windows updates, Steam tools, firewall rules, and any restarts. | The provider maintains the host operating system and panel; you still maintain game settings and saves. |
| Internet access | You must give the machine a stable local address and configure router and firewall rules. | The provider normally supplies a public endpoint, so your home router is not part of the connection path. |
| Persistence and uptime | Depends on your electricity, broadband, hardware, and reboot policy. | Depends on the provider’s infrastructure and maintenance schedule. |
| Configuration and backups | Full access to Server.cfg, logs, and save files; you design the backup routine. |
Often controlled through a panel and backup feature; confirm that you can download saves and configuration. |
| Location and latency | Players connect to your home connection, so distance and upload quality matter. | You can select a data-center region when the provider offers one; verify the actual location before paying. |
| Support | Self-support through logs, the installed files, and community documentation. | Provider support may help with the panel or host, but not necessarily with game-specific configuration. |
| Cost | No current plan price is established here; you use equipment and bandwidth you already have, with possible electricity costs. | Prices, player limits, storage, and The Forest availability vary by provider and date; check the current offer directly. |
Self-host when you are comfortable administering Windows and your router, need complete save access, or want to avoid a recurring hosting bill. Choose managed hosting when a persistent public server matters more than low-level control and you do not want to expose or maintain a home network.
Install the dedicated-server tool
Graphical installation through Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Use the library filter that displays Tools rather than only Games.
- Find the separate The Forest Dedicated Server tool, identified as app 556450, and install it. Do not install only the normal game and assume that its executable is the dedicated server.
- Open the tool’s installation folder from Steam’s properties if you need to inspect the executable, configuration directory, or logs.
Endnight’s historical announcement said the tool appeared under Steam Library → Tools. Steam labels can change, so search the Library for the dedicated-server name if the Tools filter is hidden.

Command-line installation with SteamCMD
- Install SteamCMD on the Windows machine that will run the server.
- Start SteamCMD and use its anonymous login or an authenticated account as required by the current tool distribution.
- Request installation or validation of Steam app
556450using the SteamCMD syntax shipped with your current SteamCMD version. - Read the completion output and confirm that the dedicated-server files, executable, and any support files were written to the directory you selected.
The 2019 tutorial documents a SteamCMD route, but its exact command syntax and download behavior are not independently confirmed for 2026. Do not assume that an old command succeeds unchanged; use SteamCMD’s current output to diagnose authentication, depot, or file-permission errors.
Launch once to create the configuration
The tutorial says the server generates Server.cfg automatically on its first launch. Start the installed server once, allow it to finish initialization, then stop it cleanly before editing the file. On Windows, the documented path is:
C:UsersUSERAppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerdsServer.cfg
Replace USER with the Windows account that runs the server. The actual path can differ if Windows uses another profile, the build changes its storage location, or you run the process under a service account. Search the installation and AppDataLocalLow folders for Server.cfg if the documented path is absent.
Make a copy of the entire ds directory before changing settings. That directory can contain the configuration, logs, and save data; preserving it gives you a rollback point if a new host or setting produces a blank world.
Configure Server.cfg
The guide supports two configuration methods: command-line arguments and entries in Server.cfg. When the same setting is supplied in both places, the guide says the command-line value takes precedence. Use one authoritative method for each setting so you know which value the process will use.

| Setting area | What to decide | Evidence and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Server name | Choose the public name players will recognize. | Documented by the 2019 guide; verify the exact key spelling in your generated file. |
| Player limit | Set the maximum number of simultaneous players. | The guide lists eight as its default. It is a guide-era default, not an independently confirmed current limit. |
| Password and administration | Set a join password and any administrative password or control entries exposed by your build. | Password-related fields are documented, but exact key names should be copied from the generated configuration. |
| Difficulty | Select the difficulty accepted by the installed build. | The guide exposes a difficulty option; confirm valid values before launch. |
| New or continued game | Choose whether to create a new world or continue a saved world. | The initialization mode is represented by inittype; select Continue only when the matching save exists. |
| Save slot | Choose the world slot to load or create. | The guide documents slots 1 through 5 and a slot option. Keep a note of the slot used for backups. |
| Autosave | Set the autosave interval supported by your build. | The guide includes an autosave setting; check its generated key and units rather than copying an assumed value. |
| Logging | Enable the logs you need for connection and startup diagnosis. | Logging options are listed in the guide. Keep logs during initial setup, then rotate or archive them if they grow. |
| VAC and game modes | Review anti-cheat and mode-related entries exposed in the file. | The tutorial lists VAC and game-mode settings. Their current behavior should be verified from the installed build. |
| Steam account token | Insert the server’s Steam game-server login token. | Use the serverSteamAccount entry or its launch-parameter equivalent. Treat the token as a secret. |
A safe first configuration
- Set a distinctive server name and a strong join password.
- Choose the player limit your connection and group can actually support; the guide’s eight-player value is only a historical default.
- Select
Newfor a fresh world, orContinuewith the correct save slot after confirming that the save directory is present. - Choose difficulty and any game-mode values using the spellings shown in the generated file.
- Enable logging and a reasonable autosave interval while you test.
- Save the file, retain the untouched backup, and launch the process again.
Use launch parameters when you need overrides
The tutorial gives a launch-argument pattern containing -serverip, -serversteamport, -servergameport, -serverqueryport, -servername, -serverplayers, -difficulty, -inittype, and -slot. Argument names are case-sensitive in some launchers, so copy them from the installed documentation or generated files.
For illustration, a guide-era option string could look like this:
-serverip 192.168.1.50 -serversteamport 8766 -servergameport 27015 -serverqueryport 27016 -servername ForestGroup -serverplayers 8 -difficulty Normal -inittype Continue -slot 1
This is an example of the documented option pattern, not a guarantee that every value or spelling remains accepted in 2026. The address shown is a private LAN address; it is not the address that players on the Internet should enter. If you put a value in both the command line and Server.cfg, the command line wins according to the tutorial.
Make the server reachable outside your home
Players on the same home network can usually connect through the server machine’s local address. Players elsewhere need a complete network path: the server must listen on the configured interfaces, the Windows firewall must allow the traffic, the router must forward it to the correct machine, and your Internet connection must permit inbound connections.
Documented ports
The 2019 tutorial lists these default ports and instructs operators to open them for both TCP and UDP on the router and firewall:

| Port | Documented role | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
8766 |
Steam communication | Confirm that your installed build still uses this value. |
27015 |
Game communication | Forward it to the server machine’s current LAN address. |
27016 |
Query communication | Allow the same protocol set and check that another service is not using it. |
These are documented defaults, not a promise that a custom configuration or future build will use them. If you change a port in Server.cfg or on the command line, forward the changed value instead.
Assign a stable local address
- Find the Windows machine’s private IPv4 address with the network tools already available on the system.
- Create a DHCP reservation in the router, or configure another method that keeps the server’s local address from changing.
- Set
serverIPto that local-network address when a router is involved, as the tutorial instructs. - Allow the dedicated-server executable through Windows Defender Firewall for the required TCP and UDP traffic.
- Create router forwarding rules for each configured server port, pointing to the reserved local address.
- Have an off-network player test the public address and port after the server is running. Testing only from inside the same LAN can hide loopback or forwarding problems.
The public address can change when your Internet provider reconnects your modem. Give players the current public address, not the private address beginning with ranges such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. If your provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary inbound forwarding may not work; ask the provider whether you have a reachable public IPv4 address or use a managed host instead.
Create and protect the Steam game-server token
The tutorial directs administrators to Steam’s Game Server Account Management system and says to create the account using The Forest’s game app ID, 242760. Put the resulting login token in the serverSteamAccount configuration entry or the matching launch parameter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Keep the token in a password manager or another restricted location.
- Do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, issue reports, or a shared configuration repository.
- Restrict file permissions on the configuration and service account that can read it.
- Revoke and replace the token through Steam’s account-management tools if you believe it was exposed.
The archived Docker project warns that missing token or configuration details can interfere with the intended save behavior and also tells operators not to share the token. Treat that as a practical security warning, not as proof of a specific failure in every Windows installation.
Verify saves before inviting players
A server that starts successfully can still load the wrong world. Test persistence before announcing the address:
- Start with a new or deliberately disposable slot.
- Join from a client, make a small change in the world, and leave normally.
- Stop the server cleanly and copy the complete
dsdirectory to a separate backup location. - Start the server again with the same initialization mode and slot.
- Rejoin and confirm that the change remains.
Do not change the save slot, initialization mode, token, and hosting machine at the same time. If you migrate to another computer, copy the configuration and save directories first, preserve their permissions, and record which slot is active. Keep dated backups before game updates and before experimenting with Linux or container tooling.
Best Value
- Beautiful Hidden Object scenes
- Lushly detailed and unique landscapes to discover
- Meet characters that explore the world along with you
- Use your unique magical ability to solve puzzles and uncover clues
Operate and update the server safely
Run the server under a dedicated Windows account when practical, with only the permissions it needs. Keep the console and logs available during initial operation so you can see startup errors, port-binding failures, and save-loading messages.
- Stop the process cleanly before editing configuration or copying saves.
- Back up the configuration, save data, and token location before applying an update.
- After a game or tool update, compare the newly generated configuration with your backup and re-check option names.
- Restart the server after updates rather than assuming a running process has loaded new files.
- Tell players when maintenance may reset the process or change the public address.
Endnight’s 2018 patch announcement historically asked server operators to restart and update after patches. Apply that principle to current updates, but consult the release notes that accompany the build you actually install.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| The tool is not visible in Steam | Switch the Library filter to Tools and search for the dedicated-server name. Confirm that you are looking for app 556450, not only the game app. |
| The process closes immediately | Run it once from its installation directory, read the console or logs, and compare the arguments with the generated configuration. Remove unknown options one at a time. |
| The server works on LAN but not for outside players | Check the server’s local address, Windows firewall, router forwarding, configured ports, and whether your ISP permits inbound connections. Test from a genuinely external network. |
| Players cannot find the server by query | Confirm the query port, protocol rules, Steam token, and that another application is not using the port. Use the direct connection method supported by the client if listing is delayed. |
| The wrong world loads | Check -inittype, the selected -slot, the save directory, and whether a command-line value overrides Server.cfg. |
| Changes in Server.cfg appear ignored | Look for the same setting in the launch command. The tutorial says command-line arguments override matching file values. Stop the process before editing and verify that you edited the file used by the running Windows account. |
| The world appears to reset after migration | Stop the server, restore the complete ds backup, confirm the slot and initialization mode, and verify the Steam token and permissions. Do not delete the original backup while testing. |
| A Linux container behaves differently | Remember that the indexed tool is Windows-supported and the community Docker/Wine repository was archived in March 2026. Treat container behavior as an unsupported community route and keep an independent save backup. |
When managed hosting is the simpler choice
Managed hosting is most useful when the difficult part is not editing the game settings but keeping a reachable machine online. A provider can remove home-router forwarding, power interruptions, and many operating-system tasks. You still need to verify that the service supports The Forest’s dedicated tool, allows the player count and save access you need, provides a region close to your group, and offers downloadable backups.
Do not choose on a per-slot price copied from an old community directory. The available sources do not establish current US providers, plan prices, included storage, support quality, or affiliate terms. Compare the live offer on those points before committing, and keep your own copy of the save regardless of who operates the machine.
Pre-launch checklist
- Installed the separate dedicated-server tool, app 556450.
- Confirmed the downloaded build’s executable and configuration keys rather than assuming every 2019 default still applies.
- Launched once so
Server.cfgwas generated. - Backed up the complete
dsdirectory. - Set name, password, player limit, difficulty, initialization mode, slot, autosave, and logging.
- Placed the Steam game-server token for game app 242760 in the protected configuration or launch argument.
- Assigned a stable local address and set
serverIPaccordingly. - Allowed the configured TCP and UDP traffic through Windows Firewall and the router.
- Tested both LAN and off-network connections.
- Stopped and restarted the server to confirm that the intended save persists.
- Recorded the active configuration, slot, backup location, and public connection details for future maintenance.
For a Windows administrator willing to manage ports and backups, self-hosting remains the most controllable route. For a group that values uninterrupted access and does not want to maintain a home server, a current managed-hosting service can be simpler, provided its live specifications and The Forest support are verified first.
