Messenger is rolling out end-to-end encryption by default for personal chats and calls, so there is no universal “turn on encryption” switch to follow. To preserve encrypted chat history for restoration on another device, enable Secure storage separately and set a recovery method. On messenger.com, go to Profile picture → Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → Secure storage.
Encryption and secure storage do different jobs
End-to-end encryption protects personal chat content between the sender’s and recipient’s devices. Secure storage preserves encrypted chat history so it can be restored or accessed on another device. Meta announced a default-encryption rollout in December 2023 and said in March 2024 that chats could be upgraded at different times, so the exact status can vary by account. Meta’s rollout announcement and its Messenger encryption explainer describe that change.

Meta says it prompts users to choose an access method when chats become encrypted. Options described in its materials include a six-digit PIN or a virtual key stored in Google Drive or iCloud. Help Center recovery material also refers to a 40-character code and one-time codes in some cases. The options shown can vary by account and recovery flow; use the choices Messenger presents to you. Meta’s explainer and Messenger Help Center recovery information cover these methods.
Before turning on secure storage
- Update Messenger and sign in to the account whose encrypted history you want to keep.
- If your history is still available on an older device, keep that device and its Messenger data intact until the new device has restored the history.
- Choose a recovery method you expect to retain access to. Keep any PIN or code somewhere accessible if the original device is lost, and make sure you can sign in to the Apple or Google account associated with a cloud-stored key if that is the method offered.
Turn on secure storage on messenger.com
- Go to messenger.com and open your profile menu.
- Select Privacy & safety.
- Select End-to-end encrypted chats.
- Open Secure storage.
- Select Turn on secure storage and follow the prompts to choose a recovery method.
- Save the recovery credential or code somewhere you can reach if this device is lost.
On mobile, look in Messenger’s privacy and safety settings for End-to-end encrypted chats and Secure storage. Menu positions and labels can vary by device, app version, and account rollout, so follow the labels in your app rather than assuming one tap sequence applies to every iPhone or Android phone. Restore encrypted chats on a new device
- Sign in to Messenger on the new device.
- Follow the prompt to restore your end-to-end encrypted chats.
- Enter the saved PIN or use the code or account-key option offered in that recovery flow.
Messenger Help Center guidance says PIN restoration requires secure storage to be enabled. If you forgot your PIN, a one-time code may be available in some cases; the help material says a PIN reset should be done on a device where secure storage is enabled. Available options depend on the flow presented to your account. See the Messenger Help Center recovery guidance.
If you forgot your PIN or recovery is failing
Before changing or deleting secure storage, check whether another signed-in device still has access to the history and whether you have the saved PIN, one-time code, 40-character code, or Apple/Google account key relevant to your setup. Do not delete secure storage as a troubleshooting shortcut: Meta says deletion permanently removes the encrypted chat history stored there, and Meta cannot restore that backup or reset the security method for you. What Messenger encryption does—and does not—protect
Meta describes end-to-end encryption as protecting message content in transit between devices. Its engineering team also describes the Labyrinth system used to protect stored message history, which can be read using keys under the user’s control. Meta Engineering’s explanation of Messenger’s design focuses on message-content protection.
Encryption does not make account security irrelevant. The cited materials explain protection for message content and controls involving devices and keys; they do not claim that encryption protects a compromised login or prevents someone using an unlocked, already-authorized device from reading its contents. Facebook account two-factor authentication is a separate safeguard: Meta’s security-key instructions concern account login, not Messenger secure-storage recovery.

What to know about Messenger backup changes
Meta announced a broad rollout of Labyrinth 1.1 on May 11, 2026, describing improvements to backups across device loss, device changes, and long sign-in gaps. This is a service-side rollout, not a setting users can toggle, and Meta’s announcement does not mean every account has already received identical backup behavior.
