A book-style foldable gives you a larger, tablet-like screen when opened; a conventional Ultra phone gives you one fixed display and may offer different camera, stylus, and durability features. Neither category is automatically better. The right choice depends on whether the open screen changes how you use your phone enough to outweigh the compromises of a folding design.
What’s the practical difference?
A conventional Ultra phone is a single-screen slab. A book-style foldable has a cover screen for ordinary closed-phone use and a larger inner display that opens like a small tablet. That extra screen is the defining benefit—not a guarantee of better cameras, longer battery life, or greater durability.

For current examples, Samsung lists an 8-inch inner display and 6.5-inch cover display for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra has a fixed 6.9-inch display. Diagonal measurements do not capture aspect ratio or usable area, but only the Fold8 Ultra opens into a tablet-like workspace. Samsung’s model comparison and S26 Ultra specifications provide the model details.

When does a foldable’s big screen matter?
Split-screen tasks and reading
The inner display can make two apps easier to use side by side, give documents and web pages more room, and reduce the need to switch between apps. It is most valuable if you regularly read, compare information, edit documents, or work across multiple apps on your phone.

Video and entertainment
Opening the phone gives you a much larger panel than the cover screen, which can be appealing for video and games. The benefit depends on the content and app: screen shape and interface layout matter as well as diagonal size, and the larger display does not itself establish better image or sound quality.
Everyday use while closed
A foldable still has a cover screen for quick messages, calls, and other routine tasks. Samsung says apps can transition between the cover and inner screens, but the closed experience remains a separate, narrower display rather than the uninterrupted panel of a slab phone.

What do you give up with a foldable?
A hinge and two-screen design
A foldable introduces a moving hinge and a flexible inner display. That changes the physical design and how you handle the phone. In Samsung’s 2026 listings, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is 201g and the Fold8 Ultra is 215g; the Fold8 Ultra is listed as 8.9mm thick when folded. These are manufacturer-reported figures for those models, not a rule that all foldables are lighter or thicker than all Ultra phones. Samsung’s engineering article describes the Fold8’s weight and earlier Fold generations.

Protection ratings are not a durability verdict
Water- and dust-ingress ratings differ by model, including among foldables. Google lists IP68 for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold; Samsung’s 2025 Galaxy Z Fold7 specification sheet lists IP48. Those codes describe ingress protection, not drop resistance, hinge lifespan, or protection against every kind of liquid exposure. Check the rating for the exact phone you are considering: Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold specifications and Samsung Fold7 specification sheet.

Stylus support is not implied by the large display
Samsung’s comparison lists S Pen support for the Galaxy S26 Ultra and no S Pen support for its current Fold8 models. If handwriting or drawing is a deciding factor, confirm support for the exact model and regional version rather than assuming a foldable’s inner screen works with a stylus. See Samsung’s model comparison and S26 Ultra specifications.
Which has the better camera?
There is no supported blanket winner. The listed camera hardware differs, and megapixel counts alone do not tell you which phone takes better photos. Samsung lists the S26 Ultra with four rear cameras and optical 3x and 5x zoom; the Fold8 Ultra has a 200MP wide, 50MP ultra-wide, and 10MP telephoto camera. Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold is another foldable configuration and includes a 5x telephoto. These specifications describe hardware, not comparative photo quality; the available figures do not establish an independent head-to-head result.

Does an Ultra phone last longer on a charge?
Battery capacity and battery life are different measures. Samsung lists typical 5,000mAh capacities for both the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy S26 Ultra, but equal capacity does not establish equal endurance. Samsung claims up to 31 hours of video playback for the S26 Ultra; that is a manufacturer claim, not a comparable independent test of the two phones. See Samsung’s Fold comparison and its S26 Ultra product page.
For context only, Tom’s Guide recorded 10 hours 55 minutes for the earlier Galaxy Z Fold7 in its continuous web-surfing battery test. That result belongs to the Fold7 and that publication’s test method; it does not predict Fold8 Ultra battery life. Tom’s Guide’s Fold7 comparison describes the test.
How should you compare price and software support?
Compare the same country, storage tier, and purchase conditions on the day you buy. Google’s US Store product page displayed the Pixel 10 Pro Fold from $1,799 when checked in 2026; that starting price can change and does not establish a comparable current Samsung price or a winner after promotions and trade-ins. Google also lists seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Do not assume another phone has the same support term without checking its own regional documentation. Google’s specification and product page lists both details.
Quick Recap
Which should you buy?
- Choose a book-style foldable if you will use the open screen often for reading, multitasking, or video, and you are comfortable choosing around a model’s folding design, dimensions, camera system, and support details.
- Choose a conventional Ultra if you prefer one uninterrupted display, want the S Pen support listed for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, or prioritize its particular camera and zoom hardware over an opening inner screen.
- Compare exact models rather than categories if water and dust protection, weight, thickness, battery endurance, or price is decisive. Ratings and specifications vary by phone; they cannot be generalized from one foldable or Ultra model to all others.
