To enable cfggameplay.json, place a valid copy in the mission folder the server actually loads, set enableCfgGameplayFile = 1; in the active server configuration, save both files, and restart the server. The switch is read from the server configuration; the gameplay values are read from the mission copy of the JSON file.

What cfggameplay.json does
cfggameplay.json is DayZ’s server-side gameplay settings file. It lets an administrator change supported gameplay behavior by editing JSON values instead of changing the game binaries. Bohemia Interactive’s gameplay-settings documentation describes the source file at DZ\worlds\chernarusplus\ce\cfggameplay.json. That file is a template: copy it into the mission directory used by your server, then enable loading in the server configuration.

Before you edit anything
Make a backup of the active server configuration and the mission folder. Stop the server before copying or editing files. A running process can overwrite files, keep an old configuration in memory, or make it unclear which version was loaded at startup.
Identify the active mission
The JSON must be in the mission selected by the server configuration, not simply in the DayZ installation root. On PC dedicated servers, the usual pattern is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
mpmissions/<mission>/cfggameplay.json
<mission> is the complete mission directory currently selected by the server. It may include the map and difficulty or other mission naming used by your installation. If you upload the file to a different mission directory, the server can start normally while ignoring your edits.
Locate the active server configuration
Find the configuration file that contains the server’s gameplay and startup options. A self-hosted installation may use a file such as serverDZ.cfg; a hosting panel may give it a provider-specific name. For example, a panel can present a file named serverDZ_By_HostHavoc.cfg. The filename is not the important part—the file that the server starts with is.
PC dedicated server procedure
- Stop the server. Use the service manager, script, or hosting-panel Stop control and wait until the process is fully offline.
- Open the active mission folder. Navigate to the mission selected by the server configuration, normally beneath
mpmissions/<mission>. - Copy the template. Obtain the gameplay template from
DZ\worlds\chernarusplus\ce\cfggameplay.jsonand copy it into that mission folder. Keep the filename exactlycfggameplay.json, including lowercase spelling. - Open the server configuration. Locate the existing
enableCfgGameplayFileentry. If it is present asenableCfgGameplayFile = 0;, change the value to1. If it is absent, add the line in the configuration’s normal option section:
enableCfgGameplayFile = 1;
- Save the configuration. Keep the equals sign and the terminating semicolon. Do not quote the number or replace the semicolon with a comma.
- Edit the JSON values. Change only fields documented for your DayZ version. Preserve the JSON structure and the spelling of every property.
- Validate the file. Check that braces and brackets balance, strings use double quotes, Boolean values are lowercase
trueorfalse, and no trailing comma remains after the final item. JSON does not allow comments. - Start the server. Restart it after saving both files. The enable setting and the mission-file contents are loaded during startup.
- Verify one change in game. Make a deliberately noticeable change to a documented setting, join the server after the restart, and check the related behavior. Change one setting at a time so a failed result is diagnosable.
Where the file goes on console servers
Console installations use platform-specific mission roots. The console reference lists these locations:

| Platform | Mission path |
|---|---|
| Xbox | dayzxb_missions/dayzOffline.<mapname>/cfggameplay.json |
| PlayStation | dayzps_missions/dayzOffline.<mapname>/cfggameplay.json |
Replace <mapname> with the map directory used by the server. The same rule applies as on PC: the file belongs in the active mission directory, and the server configuration must enable gameplay-file loading. A console host may expose this as a checkbox or a label such as “Use cfggameplay.json.” That control is a friendly interface for the underlying enable value; confirm that it is enabled, save the configuration, and restart the server.
JSON rules that determine whether the file loads
The server can ignore the entire gameplay file when the document is not valid JSON. The most common mistakes are mechanical rather than DayZ-specific.
Use JSON syntax, not configuration syntax
- Property names and text values require straight double quotes:
"name". - Boolean values are lowercase:
trueandfalse. Do not useTrue,False, or quoted versions unless the official field definition explicitly requires text. - Separate properties with commas, but do not leave a comma after the final property.
- Every opening brace or bracket needs a matching closing character.
- Do not insert
//or/* ... */comments. Comments are not part of JSON. - Keep the file encoded as ordinary text and preserve the exact filename and extension. A file accidentally saved as
cfggameplay.json.txtwill not be the expected file.
Change one block at a time
Copy the original template before experimenting. Make a small edit, validate the complete document, restart the server, and test. If several unrelated blocks are changed at once, a single malformed value can make it difficult to identify the cause.
Managed hosting-panel workflow
Most managed DayZ panels wrap the same files in browser controls. Labels differ, but the sequence is consistent:
- Choose Stop and wait for the server to shut down.
- Open Configuration Files or the panel’s equivalent file manager.
- Open the server configuration file used by the instance.
- Set
enableCfgGameplayFile = 0;toenableCfgGameplayFile = 1;, or add the line if it is missing. Some panels show this as Use cfggameplay.json or a checkbox. - Save the configuration.
- Open the mission-file editor or file manager and upload
cfggameplay.jsoninto the active mission folder, not the server root. - Save the JSON and use the panel’s Start control.
- After the server is online, test the one setting you changed.
If a panel automatically regenerates mission files, check whether it has a separate “advanced,” “custom mission,” or file-lock option. The underlying requirement remains the same: the server must start with the enable value set and must find the JSON beneath the mission it selected.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both approaches use the same DayZ files. The practical difference is how you reach them and how you recover from mistakes.
| Decision point | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration access | Direct access to the server’s files and startup configuration. | Browser control panel, file editor, or provider-specific configuration screen. |
| Path visibility | You can inspect the full mission tree and confirm the selected mission. | The panel may hide parent directories; use its mission-file location or file manager. |
| Restart workflow | Use your service, script, or process supervisor. | Use Stop and Start controls and wait for each operation to finish. |
| Platform support | Depends on the server software and platform you operate. | Depends on the host’s supported DayZ platforms and available file controls. |
| Backup and versioning | You must create and retain your own copies or repository history. | Some panels offer backups or snapshots; confirm what is included before relying on it. |
| Support quality | You diagnose paths, syntax, and startup behavior yourself. | Support may help with panel operations, but verify whether gameplay-file troubleshooting is included. |
There is no evidence here for a universal price, uptime, or performance advantage. Choose based on whether you need direct file control, how much maintenance you want to perform, and whether the host exposes the mission directory and restart controls you require.

The server starts, but every gameplay value behaves as before
- Confirm the active server configuration contains the exact spelling and capitalization
enableCfgGameplayFile. - Confirm the value is
1and the line ends with a semicolon. - Check that you edited the configuration actually used at startup, rather than a sample, backup, or unused profile.
- Check the mission selected by that configuration.
- Open that mission folder and verify the file is named exactly
cfggameplay.json. - Stop and restart the server after the edit; changing the file while the process is running is not a substitute for a restart.
The file is in the server root
Move it into the active mission directory. The official guidance calls for a mission-folder copy, and the PC and console paths differ by platform. A root-level copy can be perfectly valid JSON and still never be read.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA panel checkbox appears enabled, but nothing changes
Open the raw server configuration after saving and inspect the generated line. The panel label may map to the enable value, but the final configuration is what the server reads. Also verify that the panel’s selected map or mission matches the folder where you uploaded the JSON.
The server ignores the file after a recent edit
Validate the entire document, not just the lines you changed. Look for a missing quote, an unmatched brace, an uppercase Boolean, a comment, or a trailing comma. According to the console reference, a syntax error can cause the complete file to be ignored. Restore the last known-good backup if you cannot find the malformed section, then reapply changes individually.

Only some settings appear ineffective
Check whether the field is supported by the DayZ version running on the server and whether another server or mission setting overrides its effect. Gameplay fields are version-sensitive; compare the property name and allowed value with the current official reference. Test with one documented change at a time rather than assuming every template field has an obvious in-game symptom.
The server will not start after adding the line
First restore the backup configuration, then compare the edited line character by character. The expected form is enableCfgGameplayFile = 1;. Do not place JSON syntax in the server configuration file, and do not remove unrelated configuration punctuation. Once the server starts again, re-add only the enable line and restart before editing the JSON.
Players report different behavior from the administrator
Make sure everyone is joining the same server instance and map. A correct file on one instance does not affect another instance behind a different address or panel profile. Verify the test with a fresh connection after the restart and record the exact mission name used by that instance.
How to verify a successful load
A reliable verification uses a controlled, reversible test:
- Keep an untouched backup of the original JSON.
- Select one documented setting with a clear in-game effect.
- Change only that value and validate the JSON.
- Restart the server completely.
- Join the exact instance associated with the edited mission.
- Observe the affected behavior under the conditions described by the setting.
- If there is no change, restore the backup and work through the path, enable flag, and syntax checks before changing another field.
This confirms the loading chain without claiming that every field has an immediate or visually obvious result. Some options affect specific interactions, environmental conditions, or server-side checks and may require the right test situation.
Keeping the configuration maintainable
- Store a dated copy before each change so you can identify which edit introduced a problem.
- Record the DayZ version, map, mission directory, and the purpose of each modification.
- Keep the enable line in the active server configuration even when the JSON is temporarily identical to the template; disabling the line makes later JSON edits appear broken.
- After a DayZ update, compare the template and current official field reference before carrying old custom values forward.
- Use a text editor that shows matching braces and can validate JSON, but do not let it automatically “correct” unknown DayZ fields without checking the documented format.
- When handing the server to another administrator, provide both the mission path and the server configuration filename; saying only “upload the JSON” is not enough.
Quick reference
| Item | Required value or location |
|---|---|
| Enable switch | enableCfgGameplayFile = 1; |
| PC mission location | mpmissions/<mission>/cfggameplay.json |
| Xbox mission location | dayzxb_missions/dayzOffline.<mapname>/cfggameplay.json |
| PlayStation mission location | dayzps_missions/dayzOffline.<mapname>/cfggameplay.json |
| Activation | Save the configuration and JSON, then restart the server. |
| Most damaging file error | Invalid JSON can make the complete gameplay file ineffective. |
The essential chain is straightforward: enable the switch in the configuration the server actually uses, put the file in that server’s active mission folder, keep the JSON valid, and restart before testing. When a setting fails, check those four links in that order.
