Neither is universally best. Both are downloadable open-source products with no monthly core-platform fee, yet your real cost includes hosting, development, extensions or modules, maintenance, security and support.
This guide compares their architecture, built-in capabilities, scaling claims, hosting models, operating workload and five-year decision factors so you can select a platform that fits your catalog and team rather than choosing on the word free.

The short answer: match the platform to your operating model
Choose WooCommerce when your store is part of a WordPress publishing operation, content and SEO are central to acquisition, or your team already knows WordPress and wants control over code, hosting and data. Its composable model lets you add only the commerce functions you need, but it also makes extension selection, compatibility testing and updates your responsibility.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose PrestaShop when selling products is the primary purpose of the site, your catalog and order administration matter more than WordPress integration, or you need multistore and multilingual capabilities in the core workflow. PrestaShop puts more commerce functions in its specialized software, though you still need to choose modules, hosting and people with PrestaShop-specific experience.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For either platform, make the decision with a five-year total-cost and capability review. A free download does not mean a free store, and vendor statements about scale are not substitutes for testing your own catalog, integrations and order volume.
What each platform actually is
WooCommerce: an ecommerce layer for WordPress
WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin and ecosystem. WordPress remains the content-management system, while WooCommerce supplies products, carts, checkout, orders, payments and related commerce functions. This architecture is attractive when the same team publishes articles, landing pages, documentation and products, because content and commerce live in one familiar environment.
WooCommerce positions the model around ownership of the site, code and data, with unlimited hosting options and composable customization. In practice, that flexibility means you select a theme, hosting stack, payment providers, tax tools, shipping services and extensions. The result can be highly tailored, but every added component introduces another compatibility and update dependency.
PrestaShop: software built specifically for online selling
PrestaShop is ecommerce-first software rather than a commerce plugin for a general publishing system. Its administration, catalog model, order processing and merchandising tools are designed around running a store. That specialization can make product and order work more direct for an ecommerce team, while a separate content system or additional integration may be preferable if publishing is the primary activity.
PrestaShop promotes more than 600 built-in features, including capabilities it says may otherwise require WooCommerce plugins, such as advanced pricing, multilingual operation, multistore, catalog mode, product comparison and data import. Those are vendor positioning claims, not an independent feature benchmark, so confirm the exact behavior and edition you require.
Core comparison at a glance
| Decision area | WooCommerce | PrestaShop |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | WordPress plugin and composable ecommerce layer | Ecommerce-first open-source software |
| Core price | No monthly platform fee; hosting and extensions vary | Free download with no monthly core fee; a hosted subscription is also available |
| Built-in approach | Core commerce functions plus extensions; the project has been moving more essentials into core | Vendor-promoted 600-plus built-in features, including native multistore and multilingual workflows |
| Extension ecosystem | More than 1,000 marketplace extensions, plus the wider WordPress theme, plugin and service ecosystem | More than 4,000 modules on the comparison page and more than 5,000 modules and themes on the product page; an expert network is also promoted |
| Hosting | You choose and manage hosting or hire a provider | Classic self-hosting, or a Hosted subscription that bundles hosting and support |
| Best starting context | Existing WordPress site, publisher, creator, agency or content-led store | Dedicated ecommerce operation, international catalog or multistore project |
| Main trade-off | Flexibility can increase extension, compatibility and maintenance complexity | Specialized administration can require PrestaShop-specific skills and careful module selection |
Features: native capability versus modular choice
What PrestaShop puts in the core
PrestaShop’s commerce-first design emphasizes a broad set of functions in the base product. The vendor lists advanced pricing, multilingual operation, multistore, catalog mode, product comparison and data import among capabilities that may require separate WooCommerce plugins. For a team managing several storefronts, currencies, languages, customer groups or complex catalogs, having these concepts represented in the main administration can reduce the number of foundational add-ons.
Built-in does not mean configuration-free. You still need to map your product data, tax rules, shipping carriers, payment methods, search behavior, permissions and integrations. A native screen may simplify ownership, but it does not remove implementation or testing work.

What WooCommerce adds through extensions
WooCommerce favors an à-la-carte model. Its official feature material covers subscriptions, shipping, local payment methods, multilingual and multicurrency selling, tax compliance, wholesale pricing and inventory-management support, while its marketplace reports more than 1,000 extensions. You can keep a small store lean or assemble a sophisticated stack, and WordPress gives you a large pool of themes, developers and agencies.
The cost of that choice is governance. Before installing an extension, check its WordPress and WooCommerce compatibility, update history, data model, licensing terms, staging behavior and support. Avoid overlapping extensions that modify the same checkout, pricing or order tables. Keep a written inventory so a future update does not turn an unknown dependency into an outage.
Cost: free core software is only the first line
WooCommerce cost structure
WooCommerce charges no monthly platform fee, but the merchant pays for a domain, hosting, payment processing, premium extensions, development, security work, backups, monitoring and support. You select the hosting capacity and operating model, from self-managed infrastructure to managed WooCommerce hosting. Costs rise when you need staging environments, high availability, advanced search, multiple stores or custom integrations.
PrestaShop cost structure
PrestaShop offers a free Classic download that you host and operate yourself. It also offers Hosted, a subscription that includes hosting, unlimited support and essential services. Confirm which features, service levels and usage limits are included in the offer available to your region before budgeting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Self-hosted PrestaShop still requires a domain, server, backups, monitoring, security updates, development and paid modules or themes where needed. Hosted PrestaShop can make infrastructure and support easier to forecast, but the recurring subscription becomes part of your operating cost.
Build a five-year total-cost model
List one-time migration, design and integration work separately from recurring expenses. Include the following lines for both platforms:
- Domain names, certificates, transactional email and hosting or hosted subscription.
- Payment, tax, shipping, search, analytics, feed and marketplace integrations.
- Premium extensions or modules, licenses and renewal dates.
- Developer or agency hours for setup, customization, bug fixes and upgrades.
- Security scanning, backups, uptime monitoring, staging and incident recovery.
- Training, documentation and support retainers.
- Migration work if the platform, theme or data model changes later.
Also price the cost of failure: a checkout outage, incorrect tax, a broken feed or a failed update can exceed several years of license savings. Compare like-for-like capability rather than comparing one platform’s core download with the other’s fully configured store.

Hosting and deployment choices
Deploying WooCommerce
For a managed WordPress route, Antihost runs each site in an isolated environment and includes one-click staging, free migration, automated and manual backups, free SSL and WooCommerce support.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Inventory your current WordPress version, theme, plugins, product data, order history and traffic pattern.
- Select hosting with adequate PHP workers, database capacity, object caching, backups, staging and support for your expected catalog and peak campaigns.
- Build a staging copy, install WooCommerce and configure permalinks, currencies, tax behavior, email, payment gateways and shipping zones.
- Import a representative product and order sample, then test variable products, refunds, coupons, stock changes, guest checkout and account flows.
- Measure slow queries, scheduled jobs, checkout response and administrative tasks under realistic load before production launch.
- Document every extension and integration, define an update window and keep a tested rollback backup.
Deploying PrestaShop
- Choose Classic self-hosting or Hosted. For self-hosting, verify the server, database, PHP and web-server requirements for the exact PrestaShop release.
- Model your catalog, combinations, categories, attributes, customer groups, currencies, languages, tax rules and store views before importing data.
- Configure payment, shipping, email, search, redirects, analytics, stock sources and staff permissions in a staging environment.
- Install only the modules and theme components you can support; record versions and test their interactions with checkout and order processing.
- Run import validation, price and tax checks, stock synchronization, refund tests and full order-to-fulfillment rehearsals.
- Set backup retention, monitoring, security-update ownership and a rollback procedure before switching DNS or payment traffic.
In both models, a staging environment is essential. Never test a major module, theme or core upgrade directly on the live checkout.
Catalog size, traffic and scaling
PrestaShop’s comparison material claims support for very large catalogs of more than 100,000 products and high order amounts. That is a vendor claim from a competitive comparison, not a controlled benchmark. A catalog of that size requires database indexing, efficient imports, search architecture, image processing, caching, queue management and an infrastructure plan.
WooCommerce’s official material says it can scale with solid hosting and includes a customer growth example. That example is a testimonial rather than controlled performance evidence. WooCommerce can be appropriate for a large store when the hosting, database, object cache, search, scheduled jobs and extension stack are engineered for the workload.
Do not choose on a headline catalog number. Before committing, load-test your own product shapes, variations, prices, promotions, customer accounts, integrations and peak order bursts. Test both storefront and administration: bulk edits, imports, refunds, reports and stock synchronization often expose limits before a product page does.
Questions to answer in a scale review
- How many products, variants, attributes, images and price rules will exist at launch and in three years?
- How many orders, payment callbacks, shipments and stock updates arrive during the busiest hour?
- Which operations must be real time, and which can run in a queue?
- Will search remain in the database, or do you need a dedicated search service?
- Can you add application nodes, database capacity, cache and workers without a risky migration?
- What is your recovery-point and recovery-time target if the store fails?
Multistore, languages and international selling
PrestaShop makes native multistore and multilingual operation a central part of its positioning. That can simplify a group running several storefronts, brands, regions or language versions from one administration, provided your tax, inventory, pricing and permissions model fits the implementation.
WooCommerce can support multilingual and multicurrency selling through its core ecosystem and extensions. It is a viable choice when WordPress content must be localized alongside product pages, but map the complete translation, currency, tax, URL, stock and checkout behavior before selecting extensions.

For either platform, write a matrix showing each market’s language, currency, tax registration, payment methods, shipping options, returns policy, legal pages and inventory source. A platform that technically supports a language is not automatically ready for local tax, payment or fulfillment rules.
Content, SEO and marketing workflow
WooCommerce has a structural advantage when editorial publishing drives demand. Product pages, buying guides, landing pages and other WordPress content can share the same publishing workflow, user roles and content tools. This is particularly useful for a publisher, creator, agency or brand that treats organic content as a primary acquisition channel.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
PrestaShop is centered on catalog and transaction administration. It can publish store content and connect to external content systems, but an ecommerce-first team should decide whether it needs a separate editorial platform and integration. Document ownership of canonical URLs, redirects, structured data, sitemaps, international alternates and page-speed optimization before migration.
Administration and day-to-day operations
WooCommerce workflow
WooCommerce gives WordPress users a familiar dashboard and a large pool of WordPress specialists. Product, order and customer work sits alongside posts, pages and media. The same familiarity can become a drawback when many plugins add different settings screens, scheduled tasks or competing checkout logic.
PrestaShop workflow
PrestaShop’s administration is purpose-built around products, combinations, orders, customers, pricing and store configuration. Teams that do little publishing may find this focus clearer. The trade-off is a smaller pool of people who know the platform deeply, so hiring and support coverage should be part of the decision rather than an afterthought.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Extensions, modules and ecosystem risk
WooCommerce reports more than 1,000 marketplace extensions, while PrestaShop promotes more than 4,000 modules on its comparison page and more than 5,000 modules and themes on its product page. Counts change and do not measure quality, maintenance or compatibility. Treat them as indicators of breadth, not proof that a particular integration is reliable.
For every add-on, record its purpose, vendor, version, license, renewal date, data it changes, dependencies, support channel and uninstall behavior. Test upgrades with production-like data. Pay special attention to payment, tax, shipping, inventory and checkout components because a conflict in one can stop every order.

Security, updates and ownership
Open source gives you control over code and data, but it does not transfer security responsibility to the software project. Assign an owner for core updates, extension or module updates, server patches, least-privilege accounts, multifactor authentication where available, backups, vulnerability response and log review.
Maintain separate development, staging and production environments. Take a restorable backup before updates, verify the backup by performing test restores, and keep a rollback plan. After every change, test browsing, search, product variants, cart, checkout, payment callbacks, tax calculation, order email, refunds and stock changes.
Support, roadmap and version considerations
PrestaShop documents FAQs and tutorials, sells paid support plans and training, offers hosted support and promotes a network of more than 600 experts. WooCommerce provides documentation, marketplace products and the broader WordPress developer ecosystem; merchants generally arrange their own hosting and operational support.

| You have a large catalog or high order volume | Either, after testing | Vendor scale claims need validation against your architecture and workload |
| Your team lacks platform-specific skills | Whichever has stronger local support | Developer availability and operational coverage often determine real cost |
Migration and launch pitfalls
- Choosing by core price: Build a five-year cost model that includes hosting, add-ons, labor, support and incident recovery.
- Underestimating data mapping: Products, variants, customer passwords, historical orders, tax rules and URLs rarely map perfectly between systems. Define transformations and reconciliation reports.
- Ignoring extension overlap: Two tools that both alter checkout, pricing or stock can create inconsistent totals or duplicate jobs.
- Skipping load tests: A fast homepage says little about bulk imports, layered navigation, search, checkout or administration under peak load.
- Launching without redirects: Preserve valuable URLs, map changed paths, submit updated sitemaps and monitor not-found reports after migration.
- Leaving ownership vague: Name the person responsible for updates, backups, payment incidents, tax changes and emergency rollback.
- Assuming hosted means fully managed: Confirm exactly who patches the application, modules, server, backups and security controls.
Bottom line
WooCommerce is the pragmatic default for a WordPress-centered, content-led business that values composable integrations and control over hosting and code. PrestaShop is the stronger starting point for an ecommerce-first business that values a specialized back office, native multistore operation and more commerce functionality in the core product.
When the store is large, international or operationally critical, let a representative staging build and documented five-year cost model decide. Neither vendor’s free-download message nor a headline extension count can replace testing your catalog, integrations, team skills and recovery plan.
