How to Find Out Why MySQL Keeps Crashing on Your Server

Start by proving whether mysqld is actually exiting. Run mysqladmin version to check server uptime, then inspect the MySQL error log at the exact time of the restart. The final log messages, any stack trace, storage-engine errors, and operating-system messages usually separate a crashed process from a client timeout. If the same SQL statement appears immediately before every exit, enable the general query log during a controlled reproduction. Do not delete InnoDB redo logs or force recovery until you have preserved the evidence and assessed your backup options.

First establish what “crashing” means

Applications often report “MySQL crashed” when the database process is healthy but a connection timed out, a proxy closed an idle session, or the server was restarted by an administrator. A real crash means the mysqld process terminated unexpectedly and then either restarted automatically or remained down. A startup failure means the process was launched but could not complete initialization. These cases require different evidence and different levels of data-risk tolerance.

Check uptime with mysqladmin

From a host that can connect to the instance, run:

mysqladmin version

The output includes server version information and an uptime value. Run it twice, several minutes apart, and record the results with timestamps. A very small or repeatedly reset uptime supports a process restart; a stable uptime while one application reports errors points toward a client, network, authentication, or connection-pool problem instead. If the command cannot connect, that alone does not prove a crash: record whether the TCP port is reachable and whether the failure is a refusal, timeout, or authentication error.

Build a restart timeline

Write down the first failed request, the last successful health check, every observed restart, and any maintenance or operating-system event at the same time. Correlating this timeline with the error log prevents you from investigating an unrelated warning that happened hours earlier.

Read and preserve the error log before changing anything

Oracle MySQL’s troubleshooting guidance says that when mysqld has died and restarted, the reason may be in the server error log. Open the log covering the complete restart window and save an unmodified copy. Depending on the installation, it may be configured as a file, the system journal, or another destination; use the instance configuration and service manager to identify the active destination rather than assuming a default path.

Capture the useful interval

Include several minutes before the exit and all messages through startup or the failed restart. Preserve:

  • the exact timestamps and time zone;
  • the last warnings and errors before termination;
  • any stack trace, assertion, signal, or fatal-error text;
  • InnoDB page, tablespace, redo-log, or checksum messages;
  • messages about missing files, permission failures, or an unavailable data directory;
  • out-of-memory, disk-I/O, filesystem, or operating-system errors;
  • the first messages emitted by the next startup, including recovery progress.

Do not edit the original copy while searching. Make a working copy for filtering and keep the original with the incident timestamp, server version, operating system, storage layout, and configuration revision. A stack trace is especially valuable when no query is obvious, because it can distinguish a server defect from a storage or environment failure.

Run the server in the foreground when practical

A service wrapper can hide the line that explains an exit. MySQL recommends troubleshooting from a command prompt instead of through mysqld_safe or a Windows service when that is practical. On Windows, start the server with --console so diagnostic output is written directly to the console. On Unix-like systems, invoke the server binary directly with the same configuration used by the service, in a controlled maintenance window, and capture standard output and error. Running in the foreground is a diagnostic technique, not a permanent production deployment: stop the normal service first, use the correct account and data directory, and prevent a second supervisor from starting another instance against the same files.

If the foreground process exits, copy the final screen output immediately and compare its timestamp with the error log. If it stays alive while the managed service fails, investigate the service definition, permissions, environment, and resource limits rather than changing database files.

Test whether one query triggers every exit

When the last log activity is SQL-related, look for a reproducible statement. Oracle’s troubleshooting page says that about 95% of all bugs are related to a particular query. That figure is a statement in the troubleshooting guide, not a current independent measurement of production crash causes, so use it as a reason to test query reproducibility rather than as a probability for your incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable the general query log only for a controlled window

The general query log records client connections and statements and can add considerable I/O while exposing sensitive values. Restrict the test to a maintenance or staging window, protect the resulting file or table, and turn it off immediately after reproduction. If you have the required administrative privilege, a file-based test can be enabled with:

SET GLOBAL general_log = 'ON';
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'general_log_file';

The second statement tells you which file is receiving entries when file output is configured. If the instance is configured to write logs to a table, inspect the configured log destination according to that installation’s settings. After the test, disable logging:

SET GLOBAL general_log = 'OFF';

Record the exact application request, database name, account, parameters, server version, and time. Compare the final query before each exit. A statement that reliably precedes the crash after the affected tables have been checked is a strong trigger candidate, but it is not proof that the SQL is intrinsically invalid: the query may expose an optimizer path, a server defect, corrupted data, or a resource failure.

Reduce the trigger safely

  1. Reproduce against a copy or an isolated maintenance instance whenever possible.
  2. Run the smallest request that still causes the exit: remove unrelated joins, expressions, or application code one change at a time.
  3. Check whether the failure follows a particular table, index, data value, execution plan, or session setting.
  4. Preserve the general-log excerpt, error-log stack trace, schema definition, minimal SQL, and version details.
  5. Stop reproducing on the production copy once the trigger is isolated; repeated crashes increase recovery work and can worsen underlying damage.

That evidence is suitable for a minimal server bug report or for escalation to the team responsible for the query and deployment.

Check whether the storage engine or files are damaged

InnoDB: let normal crash recovery finish

After an unexpected exit, InnoDB normally reads its redo logs, rolls back uncommitted transactions, and makes the database consistent without DBA intervention. Oracle MySQL states that in most situations even an unexpected kill during heavy activity is recovered automatically. Allow startup to run to completion and watch the error log for recovery progress; interrupting it can turn a recoverable restart into a harder failure.

Do not remove redo logs to make startup appear faster. MySQL says removing them should be considered only after a clean shutdown with innodb_fast_shutdown set to 0 or 1. Deleting redo logs after an unclean exit discards information InnoDB may need to recover committed data and roll back incomplete work.

Check a suspected table

For a table that the error log identifies, run:

CHECK TABLE database_name.table_name;

Run checks during a controlled period and capture the complete result. The manual cautions that CHECK TABLE cannot detect every kind of corruption, so a successful result does not clear the storage subsystem or prove that an InnoDB crash is query-related. Match the result with page, checksum, tablespace, and disk messages in the error log.

MyISAM requires a different procedure

For MyISAM, stop mysqld before using myisamchk against the table files. Running it while the server is writing can produce misleading results or further damage. Use the actual path to the affected .MYI file, for example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
myisamchk /path/to/table.MYI

Confirm the data directory and table identity before operating on a file. Do not apply a MyISAM procedure to InnoDB tables; the engines store and recover data differently.

Choose recovery according to the evidence and data risk

Situation Safest next action What not to do
One ordinary unexpected exit; no corruption evidence Restart once and allow InnoDB crash recovery to complete while monitoring the log Do not interrupt recovery or remove redo logs
Confirmed corruption in a limited number of tables Preserve the original files, assess whether affected tables can be dumped and recreated, and validate the result from a backup Do not overwrite the only copy while experimenting
Hardware or severe system error has corrupted InnoDB; startup refuses to complete Restore a known-good base backup and apply binary-log changes with mysqlbinlog for point-in-time recovery Do not treat forced recovery as a repair or continue destructive tests on the original
Server will not start and data must be extracted Use version-specific innodb_force_recovery guidance to start in the least aggressive mode that permits a dump Do not leave forced recovery enabled as normal operation or write new data while extraction is the goal

When a normal restart is appropriate

If the error log shows an isolated unexpected termination and no page, tablespace, redo-log, or hardware errors, restart the service and wait for InnoDB to report that recovery is complete. Verify application reads and writes, check the uptime, and retain the pre-restart logs. A successful restart does not explain the original exit; it only confirms that automatic recovery completed.

When to restore a backup

If a hardware failure or severe system error corrupted InnoDB data, MySQL may refuse to start. Stop attempts that could modify the only copy, preserve the failed instance for analysis, and restore a known-good base backup. Apply subsequent binary-log events with mysqlbinlog to reach a chosen point in time. Validate table counts, application-critical records, and consistency before directing production traffic to the restored instance.

Using innodb_force_recovery for extraction

innodb_force_recovery is an emergency measure that can allow a damaged instance to start far enough to dump data. It does not repair corrupt pages or make the original dataset healthy. Follow the guidance for the exact MySQL version, begin with the least aggressive setting, make the server read-only for extraction where possible, and write dumps to separate storage. Plan a rebuild from a clean backup rather than returning the forced-recovery instance to service.

Follow the root-cause branches

Corruption, missing files, or tablespaces

Messages naming corrupt pages, tablespaces, redo logs, or missing table files point toward file integrity or storage. Preserve the original data directory and logs, identify whether the affected object is InnoDB or MyISAM, and use the engine-appropriate checks. If corruption is confirmed, backup restoration is safer than repeated repair attempts. A missing file can also indicate an incomplete restore, an incorrect data-directory setting, or a filesystem problem, so compare the active configuration with the files that actually exist.

Query-triggered server defect

A final query that reproduces the exit after table checks shifts attention to the application statement, optimizer path, or server version. Capture the minimal SQL and schema, then test it away from production. Avoid “fixing” the symptom by repeatedly retrying the same request; each retry can cause another crash and lengthen recovery.

Memory or disk failure

MySQL explicitly advises considering defective hardware, with particular attention to memory and disk subsystems, because hardware faults can corrupt data and produce apparently unrelated SQL failures. Correlate error-log I/O messages with operating-system hardware alerts, storage errors, and recent hardware or firmware changes. A clean query reproduction does not rule out hardware: a particular access pattern may simply be the first one to touch a damaged page.

Operating-system file-cache problems

MySQL notes that apparent page corruption can sometimes result from the operating system corrupting its own file cache. In some cases, restarting the computer removes that apparent condition. Treat this as a diagnostic clue, not a substitute for checking memory, disks, filesystems, and backups. If the same errors return after reboot, assume the underlying fault remains unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deadlocks and lock pressure

A deadlock normally produces a transaction error rather than killing the server, but when a failure appears related to deadlocks, enable innodb_print_all_deadlocks so details are written to the server error log. Use those records to identify transactions, tables, and lock order. Do not confuse an ordinary deadlock rollback with a process crash; verify the process uptime and exit sequence first.

A repeatable incident procedure

  1. Confirm the process state. Run mysqladmin version, record uptime, and distinguish a reset from a client-only failure.
  2. Freeze the evidence. Copy the error log, startup output, configuration version, and relevant application timestamps before rotating or deleting anything.
  3. Correlate the exit. Identify the last error, stack trace, storage message, operating-system error, and final SQL activity.
  4. Choose a low-risk test. Run the server in the foreground in a controlled window, or reproduce the suspected query on an isolated copy.
  5. Check the engine. Use CHECK TABLE where appropriate; stop the server before using myisamchk on MyISAM files.
  6. Recover conservatively. Allow normal InnoDB recovery first. Escalate to backup restoration and point-in-time recovery when corruption or severe system failure is established.
  7. Validate before reopening traffic. Confirm stable uptime, successful reads and writes, clean startup logs, and application-level data checks.

What to include when escalating the incident

Provide the MySQL version and edition, operating system, storage engine, exact UTC or local timestamps, uptime before and after the event, unedited error-log excerpts, any foreground stack trace, the final general-log query if one exists, table-check results, backup and binary-log availability, and hardware or filesystem alerts. Redact passwords, tokens, personal data, and confidential query values while preserving the structure needed to reproduce the failure. State clearly whether the instance is running normally, running only with forced recovery, or still unable to start; that status determines whether the next action is diagnosis, extraction, or restoration.
