Turn on the platform’s update setting, keep the device online in the required power state, and verify that the DLC is owned on the same account as the base game. PlayStation separates downloading from installing in some cases, while Steam and Epic Games Launcher provide their own per-game controls.
The most reliable setup has three parts: enable automation, provide an internet connection when the device is allowed to download, and confirm that the add-on is actually attached to your account. If one of those conditions is missing, a game can appear fully updated while its expansion, character pack, map, or other DLC remains unavailable.

What automatic updates can—and cannot—do
Automatic updates download patches and, where the platform supports it, content associated with games you own. They do not purchase an expansion, redeem a code, or repair an account that does not have the DLC entitlement. A missing add-on therefore has two possible causes: the download automation is off, or the storefront has not associated the add-on with the account and installation.

A platform can complete one event while another is waiting. For example, a PS5 can download an update without installing it in Rest Mode, and a game can show an installed patch while still requiring its separate DLC package or an in-game content-management step.

Power and network conditions matter. A PlayStation console must remain connected to the internet in Rest Mode for background downloads. A Switch downloads updates while it is connected to the internet. PC launchers need to be open, running in the background, or configured for their own scheduled-download behavior. Large expansions also need enough free storage, and scheduled or bandwidth-limited downloads may wait for a later window.
Automatic updating is not a guarantee that every title downloads immediately. A Steam game set to update only when launched intentionally waits, and a scheduled download window can defer a queued item. On consoles, a device that is powered off without its supported connected-rest feature cannot perform the same background work as a device left in Rest Mode or connected standby.
Enable automatic downloads on PlayStation 5
Turn on download and installation behavior
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Auto-Download.
- If you want the console to install updates while resting, turn on Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
Downloading and installing are separate choices. Auto-Install in Rest Mode may require the game not to be suspended. If you regularly leave a game suspended and do not want the console to close it, use Auto-Download without Auto-Install. That setting lets the files arrive while preserving your preference to install after you finish the current session.

Use Auto-Download when your priority is having the newest files ready for the next launch. Use Auto-Install as well when you want the console to finish the process unattended and you accept that a suspended game may need to be closed. The choice is per the console’s automatic-update behavior; it does not change who owns a DLC item.
Keep the PS5 online in Rest Mode
- Open Settings.
- Go to System and then Power Saving.
- Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
Without that connection, the PS5 cannot perform the background download while resting. PlayStation’s official instruction is: “To download games while in rest mode, set your console to stay connected to the internet.” If the console is disconnected in Rest Mode, the automatic-update switch can be on and still produce no overnight download.
When testing the setup, leave the console in Rest Mode rather than fully powering it off, then check the game later. A download that begins only after you wake the console usually points to the Rest Mode network option, an unavailable connection, or a queued update rather than a missing DLC purchase.
Check a game manually
Launching a game or app checks for its newest available version. You can also highlight the game, open its options menu, and choose the manual update check. This is useful immediately after buying an expansion or when an automatic download appears to have stalled.

A manual check is also a useful diagnostic: if the console finds a patch after you wake it, the title is reachable and the problem may have been timing or Rest Mode connectivity. If no update appears, inspect ownership and the game’s downloadable-content list before repeatedly changing power settings.
Enable automatic downloads on PlayStation 4
- Open Settings > System > Automatic Downloads.
- Enable Application Update Files.
- Open Settings > Power Saving Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
PS4 uses a different menu structure from PS5. The Automatic Downloads page controls application update files, while the Rest Mode setting supplies the network connection needed for background work. Do not follow the PS5 path on a PS4: the names and locations are different even though both consoles rely on an internet connection in Rest Mode.
After changing both settings, put the PS4 into Rest Mode and allow time for the console to contact the service. If you have just purchased an add-on, wake the console and launch the game once to trigger a fresh version check. A successful patch check does not by itself prove that a separate DLC entitlement is installed.
Remote downloads from the PlayStation Store
Once automatic downloads and updates are enabled, PlayStation says remote downloads are available when you purchase content through the PlayStation Store on the web or in the PlayStation App. The console still needs to be online and configured to stay connected in Rest Mode. Remote purchasing therefore extends the same setup; it does not bypass the console’s network or power requirements.

If a remote purchase does not appear, confirm that the web store, PlayStation App, and console use the same account. Then check the console’s library or the game’s content-management screen after the next manual update check.
Enable automatic software updates on Nintendo Switch
Use the global Switch setting
- Connect the Switch to the internet.
- Open System Settings from the HOME menu.
- Scroll to System.
- Enable Automatic Software Updates.
Nintendo says updates for installed software download automatically while the console is connected. This is a global software-update control rather than a separate switch for each game or each piece of DLC. You do not need to open an individual game’s settings to enable the system-wide feature.
The software must be installed on the console or its configured storage for the automatic-update control to apply. If an add-on is sold separately, the setting can download an update for the game without creating ownership of that add-on. Check the store account and the title’s own downloadable-content status when an expansion is still missing.
Run a manual update check
- Highlight the game or application on HOME.
- Press + or − to open the options menu.
- Select Software Update.
- Choose Via the Internet.
A manual check is the fastest way to test whether the console can see an update after you change the automatic setting or obtain an add-on. If the check reports that the software is current but the DLC is absent, move to account, storefront, and in-game content checks instead of repeatedly running the same update command.
Enable automatic updates for games in Steam
Choose behavior for an individual game
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game, or select it and open its properties.
- Choose Properties > Updates.
- Select the update behavior that fits the game.

Steam says games are placed in the download queue when an update releases. The selected per-game behavior determines when Steam proceeds with that update. A title set to launch-only can therefore appear unchanged in the queue until you start it, while a high-priority title can move ahead of other pending downloads.
These choices apply to update behavior, not ownership. Buying DLC on the same Steam account is still required, and the add-on may have its own installation checkbox or content entry in the library.
Set global download timing and bandwidth
- Open the Steam menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Review the automatic-update setting, the download schedule window, and any bandwidth limit.
The schedule can postpone a large patch or expansion until the permitted period. A bandwidth limit can make an update appear slow even though automation is working. Open Steam’s Download Manager to monitor progress, inspect queued items, and reorder downloads when necessary.
When troubleshooting, look for a paused item, a queue position behind another large game, a schedule that has not opened yet, or a bandwidth cap. Changing the per-game option to Always keep this game updated does not override every global download restriction; the client’s schedule and limit still affect when data moves.
Enable automatic updates in Epic Games Launcher
- Open the Library.
- Find the game and select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Manage.
- Turn on Auto Update. Epic indicates that the switch is enabled when it turns blue.
Epic exposes this control per game. Repeat the procedure for each title for which you want automatic updating. A blue switch confirms that the launcher’s per-game control is on; it does not confirm that a DLC purchase belongs to the signed-in account or that the add-on is selected inside the game.
If the launcher is not available to process downloads, the update may wait until it is running again. After opening it, check the library entry and the game’s management screen before assuming that the add-on was never delivered.
Why DLC may not install even when automatic updates are on
Automation does not grant ownership
DLC is both a storefront entitlement and downloadable files. Confirm that the purchase, redemption, or subscription used the same account that owns the base game. A console or launcher can be fully updated and still omit an add-on that belongs to another account.

Account mismatches are especially easy to create when a household uses multiple console profiles, when a PC launcher has more than one login, or when a code was redeemed on a different storefront. Sign in to the account that completed the transaction, open the add-on’s store listing, and verify that it is marked as owned rather than offered for purchase.

- Open the base game’s store page or search for the add-on by name.
- Confirm that the account shows the DLC as owned rather than offering it for purchase.
- Open the game’s library entry and inspect its downloadable-content or content-management list.
- Make sure the DLC is selected for installation when the platform presents selectable content.
Steam’s official DLC guidance notes that additional downloadable content can be found from the base-game store page or by searching, then accessed from the Steam Library. The exact content-management screen varies by game and platform.
Some titles list DLC as a separate library item; others place a checkbox, pack list, or install selector inside the base game’s properties. Read the status shown for the specific add-on rather than relying only on the game’s overall “up to date” label.
Force the platform to check again
- Restart the launcher or console.
- Run the platform’s manual update check.
- On PS5 or PS4, launch the game after checking the automatic-download and Rest Mode settings.
- On Switch, use Software Update > Via the Internet from the HOME-menu options.
- On Steam, inspect the Download Manager for a paused, scheduled, or bandwidth-limited item.
Restarting clears a stale session and makes the launcher or console re-read the account and update state. It is a low-risk step, but it should follow an ownership check: restarting cannot turn an unowned item into an owned one.
Check storage and connection limits
An expansion may need more free disk space than its advertised download size because the platform can require temporary space while unpacking. Free storage before retrying. On Steam, inspect the download schedule and bandwidth limit; on consoles, verify that the device is actually connected to the internet in the relevant sleep or Rest Mode.

If storage is nearly full, the client may leave the item queued or stop during installation. Make room before judging the automatic-update setting. An Ethernet cable or an SSD can be an adjacent solution for connection reliability or capacity, but neither accessory enables automatic downloads; the feature remains software-controlled.
Distinguish a patch from playable DLC
A game update can install successfully without making a purchased story pack, character set, or map playable. Some games require an in-game content-management screen, a separate download entry, or a restart after the files arrive. Follow the game’s own activation instructions after the platform confirms ownership and installation.
Do not treat a version-number change as proof that every add-on is present. Check the DLC list, the store entitlement, and any in-game menu that reports installed content. If all three show the add-on but it remains locked, the remaining issue is likely the game’s activation flow rather than the platform’s automatic-download switch.

The practical distinction is scope. Switch offers one global control, Steam combines a per-game choice with client-wide scheduling, and Epic presents a per-game toggle. Open the current Microsoft/Xbox support documentation for your console generation and software version, then verify the automatic-update and sleep-network settings there.
Costs, accessories, and storage planning
No physical product directly enables automatic DLC downloads or updates. The controls described here are built into the console, operating system, or launcher.
