To run a Windows-only Steam game on Linux, install the Linux Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Steam Play, enable Steam Play for supported titles (and, if needed, all other titles), then choose a Proton version under the game’s Properties > Compatibility page. Start with Steam’s default Proton selection, verify the exact game on ProtonDB, and keep your Vulkan graphics drivers current. If a title fails, work through a different Proton build, ProtonGE, launch logging, and the game’s individual Wine prefix instead of changing several variables at once.
What Proton does—and when you need it
Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool integrated into Steam Play. It uses Wine and related translation layers to run many Windows-exclusive games on Linux. Valve describes it as a Steam-client tool that allows Windows games to run on Linux; it is not a separate Windows installation or a virtual machine.

Proton is relevant when a game in your Steam library has no native Linux build. A native Linux version generally works best without Proton, so do not force a compatibility tool on a game that already has a native build unless a specific, documented reason exists. Compatibility is title-specific: one game may work perfectly while another from the same publisher may fail because of its launcher, anti-cheat system, video codec, graphics API, or copy-protection behavior.
Steam downloads the compatibility libraries when Steam Play is enabled. You normally do not download a Windows runtime separately. The practical goal is to let Steam select a suitable Proton build first, then override that choice only when reports for the exact game show a reason.

Prerequisites before enabling Proton
Install the Linux Steam client
Install Steam using your distribution’s supported package or software center and sign in. The menus below refer to the current Linux client. Keep Steam itself updated so its Proton releases and Steam Play integration are available.
Use a current Vulkan-capable graphics stack
Proton’s DirectX translation paths depend heavily on the graphics driver. Valve recommends current proprietary drivers for NVIDIA hardware and recent Mesa/LLVM Vulkan drivers for AMD and Intel hardware. Use your distribution’s current driver instructions; package names and commands differ between distributions, and copying a command intended for another release can leave the system with mismatched libraries.
- Confirm that the driver is intended for your GPU model and distribution release.
- Install the 64-bit Vulkan runtime and the matching 32-bit Vulkan components when your distribution packages them separately; many Windows games still use 32-bit components.
- Reboot when the distribution’s driver procedure requires it, then check that Steam recognizes the GPU before diagnosing Proton.
Have enough storage for prefixes and shader data
Each Proton game gets its own Windows-style prefix and compatibility files. These are stored alongside the Steam library in a steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/ directory. The prefix grows as launchers, redistributables, caches, and settings are installed, so leave free space beyond the game’s listed download size.

Global settings determine which non-native games Steam offers to launch with Proton.
- Open the Linux Steam client and sign in.
- Choose Steam > Settings.
- Open Steam Play in the settings sidebar.
- Check Enable Steam Play for supported titles. This lets Steam use Proton for games Valve has identified as supported.
- Check Enable Steam Play for all other titles if you want Steam to offer Proton for every Windows game, including titles without a Valve compatibility designation.
- Restart Steam if it asks you to do so.
- Install or launch the game. Steam automatically downloads the required Proton compatibility libraries when Steam Play is enabled.
Leave the second option off if you want Steam to restrict Proton to supported titles. You can turn it on later without reinstalling Steam or your games. Enabling it does not guarantee that every game will run; it only makes Proton available for those entries.

Configure Proton for one game
Per-game settings are safer than changing the global default when only one title needs a workaround.
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a Proton version from the list.
- Close the properties window and launch the game.
To return control to Steam, revisit the same page and clear the checkbox. With it unchecked, Steam uses its default selection for that title. If you change versions, allow Steam to finish downloading the selected tool before launching.
How to choose a Proton version
There is no universally best Proton release. A newer build can contain a fix for one game and introduce a regression in another. Choose based on reports for the exact title, its graphics API, launcher behavior, and the stability of the workaround.

Before changing versions, read current ProtonDB reports for the exact game and, where relevant, its edition or launcher. Look for the Proton version used, launch options, required dependencies, multiplayer or anti-cheat status, and whether the report describes a complete session rather than only a successful startup. Treat reports as evidence for that title, not a guarantee for every system.
Graphics APIs: DXVK, vkd3d-proton and wined3d
Many Windows games render through DirectX, while Linux graphics drivers expose Vulkan or OpenGL. Proton selects translation layers according to the game’s API:

- DXVK translates DirectX 9, 10 and 11 rendering to Vulkan.
- vkd3d-proton translates DirectX 12 to Vulkan.
- wined3d provides an OpenGL-based path for supported DirectX 9/10/11 cases.
Vulkan is normally the preferred path when the driver supports it. Valve documents a targeted override, PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%, which switches supported DirectX 9/10/11 paths from DXVK to wined3d. Use it as a troubleshooting experiment for a specific game; remove it when it does not solve the problem or after a later Proton or driver update makes it unnecessary. It is not a general performance setting.

If the official builds do not address a game-specific problem, ProtonGE may be worth testing. It is a community fork that can carry fixes before they appear in a Valve release. System76 identifies ProtonUp-Qt as a tool for installing and managing Proton versions.
Using ProtonUp-Qt
- Install ProtonUp-Qt through a package source supported by your distribution.
- Open ProtonUp-Qt and select the Steam installation or compatibility-tool location it detects.
- Choose the ProtonGE release recommended by a current report for your game and install it.
- Restart Steam if the new tool does not appear immediately.
- Open the game’s Properties > Compatibility page, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select the installed ProtonGE entry.
Manual compatibilitytools.d installation
Steam also discovers custom tools placed in a compatibilitytools.d directory. The exact directory depends on the Steam installation and library location. Create the directory under the relevant Steam compatibility-tools path, place the custom Proton folder there, restart Steam, and select it from the same Proton dropdown. Do not place an unpacked tool in an arbitrary game directory; Steam will not necessarily detect it.
Keep a note of which game uses a custom build. If a later official Proton release includes the needed fix, clear the per-game override and return to Steam’s selection rather than accumulating permanent exceptions.
Use launch options for controlled diagnostics
Steam passes environment variables and arguments from the game’s launch-options field to Proton. Open Properties > General > Launch Options. Put an environment variable before %command%; Steam replaces that token with the actual game command.

Enable Proton logging
For a reproducible launch failure, enter:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%Launch the game, reproduce the failure, exit Steam or the game, and inspect the log named steam-$STEAM_APP_ID.log in your home directory. The $STEAM_APP_ID portion is replaced by the game’s numeric Steam application ID. A log is most useful when you record the Proton version, GPU and driver version, and the exact point at which the launch stops.
Test one override at a time
Do not paste a long list of variables from unrelated reports. Start with logging, reproduce the issue, then test one documented change. Remove a launch option after the experiment so it cannot obscure the result of a future Proton update. A launch option that fixes rendering can still cause a launcher, video, input, or performance regression.

Proton creates a separate Wine prefix for each game under the Steam library’s steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/ path. The prefix contains the Windows-style registry, drive mapping, installed redistributables, configuration files, and other state for that title. Two games therefore do not automatically share a change made inside one prefix.
When a prefix reset is appropriate
A damaged prefix can prevent a game from starting after a failed installer or incompatible tweak. Deleting or renaming the prefix forces Proton to create a fresh Windows environment on the next launch, but it also removes that game’s prefix-local settings and installed components. Treat this as a reset, not a routine cleanup.

- Back up saves according to the game’s own save design before resetting. Steam Cloud may not cover every save location or may synchronize an already-bad state.
- Record the current Proton version, launch options, and any documented dependencies.
- Prefer renaming the prefix temporarily when you need a reversible test.
- Launch once with no extra overrides and allow the game to rebuild its environment.
Do not reset a prefix merely because a game takes time to compile shaders or because the first launch is slow; those behaviors can be normal after a driver or Proton change.
A structured workflow when a Proton game will not launch
Change one layer at a time and keep the last known working configuration. This order separates configuration errors from game-specific incompatibility.
- Confirm the game type. Check whether Steam is launching a Windows-only entry or a native Linux build. A native build generally should not be forced through Proton.
- Confirm Steam Play. Verify Steam > Settings > Steam Play and make sure the per-game Compatibility checkbox is not forcing an unavailable or inappropriate tool.
- Read current title reports. Search ProtonDB for the exact game, edition and launcher. Note the reported Proton version, launch options, known dependencies, and multiplayer limitations.
- Start with Steam’s default Proton. Remove experimental launch options and test a clean launch so you have a baseline.
- Update the graphics stack. Install the current NVIDIA driver or Mesa/Vulkan stack recommended for your distribution and GPU. Reboot if required.
- Try one nearby Proton build. Test a stable release or Proton Experimental only when reports or a recent fix justify it. Wait for Steam to finish downloading it.
- Test ProtonGE if indicated. Install it with ProtonUp-Qt, select it per game, and retest without unrelated variables.
- Collect a log. Add
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, reproduce the failure, and inspect the generated log in your home directory. - Test a graphics-path workaround. If the problem is specifically tied to a DirectX 9/10/11 Vulkan path, try
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%as a temporary comparison. - Reset only with a reason. Back up saves and rename or remove the game’s compatdata prefix only after the preceding checks indicate a broken per-game environment.
Common symptoms and targeted responses
Steam shows Play, then immediately returns to the button
Check the title’s ProtonDB reports and run once with the default Proton and no launch options. Then update Vulkan drivers, try a documented alternate Proton version, and collect a Proton log. Immediate exits can result from a missing 32-bit graphics component, an incompatible launcher, or a title-specific regression; the log and reports are more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the whole game.
The game opens, but graphics are broken or unusably slow
Verify that the correct GPU driver is active and that Vulkan works outside the game. Identify whether the title uses DirectX 9/10/11 or DirectX 12, because DXVK and vkd3d-proton follow different paths. Test a driver update or a Proton version named in current reports. For a supported DirectX 9/10/11 case, compare with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%; keep whichever path is stable for that title and remove the override if it is not helpful.
A launcher appears, but the game itself does not
Read reports for the exact launcher and edition. Some launchers require a particular Proton build or a documented launch option. Avoid applying a workaround from a different game: launcher behavior, account checks and installed dependencies are not interchangeable.
Multiplayer or anti-cheat does not work
Successful single-player startup does not establish online compatibility. Look for current title-specific reports that explicitly cover multiplayer and anti-cheat status. Proton cannot make an unsupported server-side anti-cheat configuration compatible by itself; if the game’s current reports say online play is blocked, changing graphics options is unlikely to help.
Controller input works but rumble does not
Valve’s FAQ states that Proton supports controller rumble, but Steam for Linux’s Gamepad Configuration Support feature does not support rumble. If rumble is required and is not working, disable Steam’s Gamepad Configuration Support and test the controller again. This is a client-input setting, not a Proton version setting.
Keeping a working configuration maintainable
- Write down the game, Proton version, launch options, driver version and date whenever a change fixes a problem.
- Prefer the default Proton after a fix is incorporated upstream; remove stale per-game overrides.
- Keep Steam, your distribution and the graphics stack updated, but test a problematic game after each significant change rather than changing everything simultaneously.
- Use ProtonDB as a living, title-specific reference and distinguish reports for the same game but different launchers, editions or patches.
- Keep save backups independent of the compatdata prefix so a troubleshooting reset cannot destroy your progress.
Practical decision tree
- Native Linux build available? Use it first unless a known feature requires the Windows build.
- No native build and Steam Play disabled? Enable it globally, then restart Steam if prompted.
- Game has a strong ProtonDB report? Start with the reported Proton version and only the documented workaround.
- No reliable report? Use Steam’s default Proton, current Vulkan drivers and no launch options as the baseline.
- Still failing? Test one nearby official build, then ProtonGE if a report supports it, and capture a Proton log.
- Evidence points to a corrupt environment? Back up saves, rename the prefix, and rebuild it once.
Proton works best as a measured compatibility layer: current drivers, a per-game evidence-based Proton choice, and reproducible logs matter more than always selecting the newest or most experimental build.
