How to embed Google reviews with a hosted, no-API-key plugin
A hosted plugin handles the business search and synchronization through its own service. In the documented GR Widget workflow, the WordPress administrator searches for the business in the WordPress dashboard, chooses a layout, and publishes it with a Gutenberg block or shortcode. The site does not store or send a Google API key, while the provider’s public script loads on pages where the widget is used.
1. Verify the provider and plan details
Install only a plugin from a source you trust. Read its documentation for where review data is processed, where scripts are served, how often listings are synchronized, what happens if the service is unavailable, and which features are included in the current plan. Vendor limits can change, so treat them as plan details rather than permanent WordPress capabilities.
For example, the free GR Widget listing documents one widget per site, five layouts, up to five reviews per business, monthly synchronization, Gutenberg and shortcode support, and unlimited views. Confirm those limits in the plugin’s current listing before relying on them; a monthly refresh may not be suitable for a site that promises near-real-time updates.
2. Install the plugin in WordPress
- Sign in to WordPress with an administrator account.
- Open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for the review plugin by its exact name and inspect the author, update history, compatibility information and permissions.
- Select Install Now, then Activate.
If a provider supplies a ZIP file instead, use Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, upload the ZIP, install it and activate it. Do not upload an unknown file or a plugin copied from an unofficial download site.
3. Find and select the correct business
Open the plugin’s settings or connection screen and search by the business name, city and address. Compare the returned listing with the real profile. Check the business name, street address, rating, review count and profile link. If several locations appear, select the exact location that the page represents. A widget that displays a different branch is a trust problem even if the design looks correct.
4. Configure the review display
Choose the format that matches the page:
- Card or list: Best when visitors should read several complete excerpts.
- Slider: Useful in a compact area, but make sure users can pause or navigate it and that text is still readable on a phone.
- Badge: Suitable for a small rating summary near a call to action; it is not a substitute for readable review content when testimonials are central to the page.
Set the number of reviews, spacing, colors, typography and link behavior offered by the plugin. Keep the rating and review count visible, and retain a link to the Google listing when the plugin provides one. Avoid editing review wording or presenting an excerpt as if it were the complete original review.

5. Insert the block or shortcode
For a normal page or post, use the block editor:
- Open the target page or post.
- Select the + inserter and search for the plugin’s review block.
- Insert the block, choose the connected business and layout, then save or update.
If the plugin provides a shortcode, copy the generated shortcode exactly and place it in a Shortcode block. Depending on your theme and plugin, a shortcode may also work in a sidebar or footer widget, a reusable template, a page-builder module or a compatible PHP template location. Keep template edits in a child theme or the theme’s supported customization system so an update does not erase them.
6. Preview, publish and verify synchronization
Preview the page at desktop and mobile widths before publishing. Confirm that the business name, star rating, review count, text, profile link and any “read more” control are correct. After publication, revisit the page according to the provider’s documented synchronization interval and check that a new review appears when one is available. A hosted widget may update on the provider’s schedule rather than immediately after a review is posted.
How to use a Google API-key plugin
An API-key plugin connects your WordPress site or the plugin’s service to Google’s APIs. The documented Rich Showcase setup, for example, uses a free Google API key and a connection wizard. The exact labels differ by plugin, but the security and policy responsibilities are similar.
1. Create a Google project and enable the required API
Follow the plugin’s current documentation to create a project, enable the API it actually uses and configure any required billing or quota settings. Do not enable unrelated APIs merely because a tutorial lists them. API names, console screens and requirements can change, so use the current Google and plugin instructions.
2. Create and restrict the key
Apply the narrowest restrictions available. Depending on the architecture, that can include HTTP referrer restrictions for browser requests, server or IP restrictions for server-side requests, and API restrictions limiting the key to the required service. Never paste an unrestricted key into a public post, theme file, support ticket or version-control repository.
3. Connect the key in WordPress
- Open the plugin’s connection wizard or settings page.
- Paste the key only into the designated credential field.
- Save and run the plugin’s connection or business-search test.
- Select the authorized business listing and confirm its address, rating and review count.
If the plugin requires a server-side key, do not expose it in page source or client-side JavaScript. Review the plugin’s documentation to understand whether requests run from your server, the browser or the vendor’s service.

4. Monitor usage and failures
Set quota alerts where Google provides them, review usage periodically and rotate a key if it is exposed. Keep a record of who is authorized to manage each listing. A working widget is not proof that the integration is compliant: Google’s policy also governs which listings you may manage and how API-provided content can be accessed and retained.
Building a custom integration: when it is justified
Custom code is appropriate for a development team that needs a bespoke component, a controlled multi-location system or integration with an existing content platform. It is excessive when the requirement is simply “show the latest few reviews on one page.”
A custom implementation must account for authentication, API quotas, error handling, response validation, escaping review text, responsive markup, keyboard navigation, caching, invalidation, monitoring and deployment. You also need a recovery path when a credential expires, a listing changes, an API response is incomplete or Google modifies an endpoint.
Storage and retention limits
Google states that API-provided content may be stored only temporarily, securely and for no more than 30 calendar days under the policy’s conditions. Treat that as a compliance constraint for caches, database tables, backups and logs—not as permission to create a permanent archive of review content. Design cache expiration and deletion jobs deliberately, and verify the current policy before deploying.
Authorized access and indirect use
Google’s policy says: “You can only use the Business Profile APIs to create, manage, and report on business listings that you either own or are authorized to manage on behalf of the business owner.” The policy also prohibits indirect automated access in which clients use a provider’s project instead of their own permitted project. If an agency is building a system for several businesses, document the authorization model and confirm that the chosen architecture complies with the current terms.
Where to place Google reviews in WordPress
Testimonials or reviews page
Use a full-width list or cards when visitors are specifically evaluating reputation. Include context about the service or location and a clear link to the business profile.

Home-page trust section
Place a compact rating summary or a small selection of reviews near the value proposition or a relevant call to action. Do not let a large externally loaded widget push the main content below the first view on slower devices.
Service or location landing page
Show reviews that are relevant to the service or branch represented by that page. Verify that a multi-location site does not accidentally display reviews for the wrong profile.
Sidebar, footer or reusable template
A shortcode is often more practical than a page-level block when the same widget must appear in a sidebar, footer or page-builder module. Check the theme’s width constraints; a three-column desktop layout may become unreadable on mobile.
Use sufficient contrast, readable type, visible focus states and comfortable spacing. Test long names, long review text, missing profile photos and translated or unusual characters. No authoritative evidence establishes a guaranteed SEO, speed, accessibility or conversion improvement from embedding reviews, so measure your own site rather than promising a result.

- Limit loading scope: If the plugin documents that its script loads only on pages containing its block or shortcode, use that mechanism rather than adding a site-wide script. Still test the result in your own environment.
- Measure page speed: Compare the page with and without the widget using your normal performance tooling. Check first-view rendering, layout shift, script weight and mobile behavior.
- Review third-party requests: Identify domains contacted by the widget, what data is sent and whether cookies or identifiers are set. Update the privacy documentation when appropriate.
- Protect credentials: Restrict API keys, keep them out of public code and rotate them after exposure or staff changes.
- Preserve accessibility: Ensure controls have names, sliders can be operated from a keyboard, text is selectable and color contrast remains readable.
- Plan for service failure: Decide whether the page should hide the widget, show a cached summary or display a normal fallback when the provider or API is unavailable.
Troubleshooting common embedding problems
The wrong business appears
Delete the connection and search again using the exact business name, street address and city. Compare the selected Place or Profile with the public listing before saving. For a chain or multi-location organization, confirm the branch on every page that uses a reusable block or shortcode.
No reviews load
- Confirm that the Google listing is public and has reviews.
- Check that the plugin connection is active and that the selected profile still exists.
- For an API-key integration, verify the required API, key restrictions, quota and any billing configuration.
- Temporarily disable script-minification, firewall or content-security rules that could block the widget, then add a precise exception rather than leaving protections disabled.
- Inspect the browser console and the plugin’s logs for an authentication, quota or JavaScript error.
The reviews are stale
Look up the provider’s synchronization interval. A monthly schedule, such as the interval documented for the free GR Widget listing, will not reflect a new review immediately. Use the plugin’s refresh control if the plan provides one, and avoid repeatedly forcing requests that could consume API quota.
The widget breaks the layout
Switch to a list or narrower card layout, remove fixed widths, and test at common mobile widths. Check for horizontal scrolling, clipped buttons, overlapping star icons and text that cannot be enlarged. If custom CSS is needed, scope it to the widget wrapper so it does not change every button or heading on the site.
The widget affects privacy or security
Prefer a provider that clearly explains where scripts and review data are served. Document relevant third-party requests in the site’s privacy information. For API integrations, rotate exposed keys, tighten restrictions and review access logs.

A policy question arises
Use only listings the business owner has authorized you to manage. Recheck Google’s current Business Profile API policies before launching a custom integration, especially when using a cache, an agency account or a service that handles several clients.
