Sons of the Forest has seven armor types: Leaf, Hide, Bone, Creepy, Tech, Ancient (the renamed Golden Armor), and Solafite (the upgraded Golden Bone Armor). Leaf, Hide, Bone, and Tech are made from gathered, hunted, or printed materials; Creepy comes from skinning mutants; Ancient is found in a late-game cultist cave; and Solafite is created by plating Bone Armor with Solafite in the Armor Plater.
The best choice depends on what you can replace, how much material you can spare, and whether you need ordinary protection or a story-critical outfit. Use the location-led routes below rather than relying on unverified coordinates, since cave entrances and armor requirements can change with patches.

The seven armor types at a glance
Most armor in Sons of the Forest is assembled as individual pieces. Those pieces can be consumed in combat, so a practical set is one you can replenish with the materials available in your current region. Ancient Armor works differently: it is a complete progression outfit with its own damage-resistance model, not simply another stack of breakable pieces.
| Armor | How you obtain it | Main dependency | Durability or protection information | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leaf | Craft in the inventory | Leaves and cloth | Specific numeric value not stated | Immediate, renewable early-game cover |
| Hide | Craft in the inventory | Animal hides, especially deer or moose | Specific numeric value not stated | Players with dependable wildlife nearby |
| Bone | Craft in the inventory | Bones and cloth | Specific numeric value not stated | General progression and the Solafite upgrade base |
| Creepy | Skin mutants with the utility knife | Mutant encounters | Durability 80, according to the Sons of the Forest Wiki’s 2026 crawl | Renewable mid- to late-game supply |
| Tech | Print Tech Mesh, then combine the electronic components | 3D Printer, batteries, circuit board, duct tape, wire, and printed mesh | Specific numeric value not stated | Players able to support a high-material recipe |
| Ancient (formerly Golden) | Find the complete outfit in the cultist cave by a large mountain lake | Late-game cave access and progression | Does not break; 30% resistance against cannibals and other mutants, 70% against demons | Story progression and demon-heavy endgame areas |
| Solafite (formerly Golden Bone) | Plate Bone Armor in the Armor Plater | 12 Solafite for each Bone Armor piece | Described as the highest-durability armor; no numeric value stated | Long-term combat protection after the upgrader is available |
There is no single “best” set for every save. Leaf and Hide are easy to replace but depend on ordinary gathering or hunting. Bone is a dependable bridge into higher tiers. Creepy is renewable once mutants are a regular part of your route. Tech spends several unrelated components. Ancient is exceptionally useful for progression but is not a normal replacement set, while Solafite gives the strongest durability description at the greatest material and combat risk.

How armor pieces and replacement affect your choice
Think of conventional armor as a stockpile rather than a permanent character statistic. A piece that is consumed or lost matters only if you can make or obtain another one quickly. This makes availability as important as protection:
- Gathering loop: Leaf Armor can be replenished wherever foliage and cloth are available.
- Hunting loop: Hide Armor is practical when deer or moose are present and you have enough hides in reserve.
- Scavenging loop: Bone Armor rewards trips through combat sites and caves where bones accumulate.
- Combat loop: Creepy Armor turns successful mutant fights into future armor supplies.
- Printer loop: Tech Armor is limited by batteries, electronics, tape, wire, and printer access rather than one renewable material.
Ancient Armor should be evaluated separately. It does not ask you to maintain a conventional ten-piece armor stack, and its mitigation percentages apply as a distinct system. Solafite Armor also changes the logistics equation: every upgrade consumes a fixed quantity of a scarce underground resource and starts an attack event, so preparation is part of the “cost.”

Where to get it
Collect leaves from ordinary vegetation and keep cloth in your inventory. Open the inventory, place the available leaves and cloth on the crafting mat, and complete the Leaf Armor recipe. The exact quantity is not specified in the available documentation, so use the recipe displayed by your current game version rather than a memorized number.
When Leaf Armor makes sense
Leaf Armor is the answer when you need protection immediately and have not yet built a reliable supply of bones, hides, or printed materials. It is especially useful after a difficult encounter leaves your normal pieces depleted: vegetation is common, and cloth can be carried ahead of time. Its weakness is not a documented resistance percentage; it is opportunity cost. Time spent gathering leaves does not build the stockpiles required for Bone, Tech, or Solafite upgrades.
Efficient preparation
- Carry spare cloth so foliage is the only material you need to collect on a recovery trip.
- Craft near a safe shelter or inventory access point rather than gathering in an active combat area.
- Switch away from Leaf Armor when your save begins producing bones, hides, or mutant drops consistently; the renewable emergency option is not automatically the most economical long-term option.
Hide Armor: a hunting-dependent upgrade
Where to get the materials
Hide Armor is crafted in the inventory from animal hides. The practical source animals identified for this route are deer and moose. Hunt those animals, collect their hides, and combine the hides with cloth using the inventory crafting interface.
Planning around wildlife
Hide availability depends on the wildlife around your base and the success of your hunting trips. If animals are scarce in your immediate area, Hide Armor may be slower to replace than Leaf or Bone Armor even though the recipe itself is straightforward. Keep hides in storage until you have enough for the pieces you actually need; spending every hide immediately can leave you without a replacement after the next fight.

Who should use it
Hide Armor suits a player who already travels through deer or moose territory and wants to turn routine hunting into protection. It is less attractive for a cave-focused run that produces bones and mutant encounters but little wildlife. The game does not provide a single published numeric durability figure for Hide Armor in the available references, so judge it by your replacement supply rather than an assumed statistic.
Bone Armor: the bridge to Solafite
Where to get the materials
Craft Bone Armor from bones and cloth in the inventory. Bones commonly come from combat sites and caves, making this set a natural companion to exploration. Gather them after encounters, move them into storage, and craft pieces when your current protection is running low.
Why Bone Armor matters beyond the early game
Bone Armor is the base item for Solafite Armor. A player who skips Bone Armor entirely still has to obtain it before using the Armor Plater, so collecting bones is part of the late-game upgrade plan as well as an early defensive strategy. This gives Bone Armor a unique role among the basic sets: every piece can be used immediately or held as an upgrade candidate.
Resource management
- Prioritize bones from caves and combat sites instead of discarding them after a fight.
- Keep enough cloth for both ordinary Bone Armor crafting and any pieces you plan to plate later.
- Do not carry every bone into a dangerous cave; store surplus materials and bring only what you need for the planned crafting session.
Bone Armor’s exact durability value is not stated in the available references. Its measurable advantage is strategic: bones are tied to activities you are already performing, and the same recipe feeds the Solafite path.
Creepy Armor: skin mutants for a renewable supply
Acquisition step by step
- Find a mutant encounter in a cave, at a combat site, or along a route where mutants regularly appear.
- Defeat the mutant safely enough to approach the body.
- Equip the utility knife.
- Use the knife to skin the mutant and collect the resulting Creepy Armor piece.
The Sons of the Forest Wiki records Creepy Armor durability as 80 in its 2026 crawl. Unlike material-crafted sets, its supply is tied directly to mutant encounters, so the armor becomes more renewable as your combat routes become more reliable.
Where to farm it
The Solafite Cave can also provide mutants that yield Creepy Armor. That makes the cave useful for two goals at once: collecting the material needed for Solafite progression and replenishing Creepy pieces. Do not assume every mutant body will be safe to skin immediately; clear nearby threats first, then use the utility knife.

Trade-offs
Creepy Armor avoids the printer and hunting requirements of Hide and Tech Armor, but it asks you to accept combat risk. It is a strong mid- to late-game choice when mutants are available in predictable numbers. It is a poor emergency option immediately after a failed expedition if you cannot safely reach another mutant encounter.
Tech Armor: print the mesh, then assemble the set
Find a 3D Printer
The 3D Printer Cave in the central-western area is identified as an early printer location. Reach a printer and make Tech Mesh before attempting the rest of the recipe. Printer access is the gating step; without it, the other electronic components cannot be turned into Tech Armor.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Collect every component
Tech Armor uses the printed mesh together with batteries, a circuit board, duct tape, and wire. The recipe is therefore more resource-intensive than the basic organic-material sets. Check your inventory for all of those categories before entering a dangerous area, because arriving with mesh but missing one electronic component does not complete the armor.
Recommended workflow
- Locate the printer and make the required Tech Mesh.
- Return to a secure inventory point or remain in the printer cave only if the area is safe enough to organize materials.
- Confirm that batteries, a circuit board, duct tape, and wire are available.
- Combine the mesh and components in the inventory crafting interface.
- Store spare electronic components separately so one lost expedition does not erase your entire Tech Armor plan.
Tech Armor is best for a player whose exploration already produces electronics and printer access. It is not the efficient choice when the only materials you can gather are leaves, hides, or bones.
Ancient Armor: the renamed Golden Armor and its cave route
What changed in the name
Ancient Armor is the current name for what older guides call Golden Armor. Searching for either name can help when reading different versions of maps or walkthroughs, but the item described here is the same late-game progression outfit.
Where to find it
Look for the cultist cave beside a large lake near the mountain. Location descriptions identify the landmark as near the south-western base of the mountain or by the large lake on the mountain’s eastern side. Because consistently verified GPS coordinates are not available, navigate by the lake-and-mountain landmark and the cave entrance rather than relying on a copied coordinate.

What the outfit does
Ancient Armor is a complete outfit rather than ten conventional armor slots. It does not break. Its documented damage resistance is 30% against cannibals and other mutants and 70% against demons. That split makes it particularly valuable when the threat changes from ordinary island enemies to demons in the late game.
Its story requirement
The outfit is automatically used when the plated version opens the late-game magma-cavern gate. Treat Ancient Armor as progression equipment, not merely as a stronger replacement for Creepy or Bone pieces. If you are preparing for the gate, keep the outfit available even if you prefer another armor set for ordinary fights.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Solafite Armor: convert Bone Armor in the Armor Plater
Required items
Start with Bone Armor pieces, then collect Solafite. Each Bone Armor piece requires 12 Solafite in the Armor Plater. The conversion is the current version of the upgrade formerly called Golden Bone Armor.
Where to find Solafite and the upgrader
Solafite deposits are primarily underground. The Solafite Cave southeast of the golf course and Maintenance Bunker C contain deposits, and the Solafite Upgrader blueprint is associated with this route. Explore those locations with enough inventory space for the ore and enough supplies to survive the return trip.
Plating procedure
- Craft or carry the Bone Armor piece you intend to upgrade.
- Bring 12 Solafite for that piece; multiply the requirement by the number of pieces you plan to plate.
- Use the Armor Plater and place the Bone Armor into the plating interface.
- Supply the required Solafite and start the conversion.
- Defend yourself when the resulting Solafite Storm attracts mutant waves.
- Collect the finished Solafite Armor and repeat only when you have another Bone piece and another 12 Solafite available.
Prepare for the storm
Plating is not a quiet crafting action. It starts a Solafite Storm that attracts waves of mutants. Clear space around the Armor Plater, place healing items and weapons nearby, and avoid beginning the process while already wounded or carrying irreplaceable exploration loot. If you are upgrading several pieces, decide whether to trigger the event once for a batch of work or to make repeated trips; the documentation establishes that the event occurs when plating begins, but not a separate event duration or enemy count.
Why Solafite is a late-game choice
Solafite Armor is described as the highest-durability armor, but its advantage comes with a fixed 12-Solafite cost per piece and a forced combat encounter. It is most efficient after you can repeatedly reach underground deposits, protect the Armor Plater, and replace Bone Armor without delaying other progression tasks.
Best Value
Choosing armor by stage, risk, and resources
| Situation | Recommended direction | Reason | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| You have just started and need protection now | Leaf Armor | Leaves and cloth are the simplest emergency materials | Waiting for a printer or a rare cave route |
| Wildlife is plentiful near your base | Hide Armor | Deer or moose turn hunting into a repeatable supply | Spending every hide without a replacement reserve |
| You are exploring caves and combat sites | Bone Armor | Bones arrive from the same activities and also enable Solafite upgrades | Discarding bones before the upgrade plan is complete |
| Mutants are a regular, manageable encounter | Creepy Armor | Skinning with the utility knife creates a renewable source; durability is listed as 80 | Attempting to skin bodies before the area is secure |
| You have printer access and electronics | Tech Armor | Printed mesh plus stored electronic components supports a specialized set | Starting the recipe without batteries, a circuit board, tape, or wire |
| You need demon resistance or the magma-gate progression | Ancient Armor | It does not break, resists demons by 70%, and is used for the late-game gate | Treating it as an ordinary stack of replaceable pieces |
| You have the Armor Plater and underground Solafite | Solafite Armor | It is the highest-durability option described and costs 12 Solafite per piece | Plating while unprepared for the mutant storm |
Use replacement availability for early-game decisions, durability and resource investment for mid- to late-game decisions, and story utility as a separate axis. Ancient Armor can be the correct answer for a gate even when Solafite Armor is your preferred combat set elsewhere.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A practical progression route
- Stabilize with Leaf Armor. Gather foliage and cloth so the first caves and combat sites are not attempted unprotected.
- Build a hunting or scavenging reserve. Choose Hide if deer or moose are common; choose Bone if caves and combat sites are producing bones.
- Start collecting mutant drops. Once you can clear encounters safely, skin mutants with the utility knife and add Creepy pieces to your reserve.
- Secure printer access. Visit the central-western 3D Printer Cave, produce Tech Mesh, and gather the electronic components before committing to Tech Armor.
- Reach the cultist cave by the mountain lake. Retrieve Ancient Armor when your route and equipment support the late-game cave.
- Locate Solafite underground. Explore the Solafite Cave southeast of the golf course and Maintenance Bunker C for deposits and the upgrader blueprint route.
- Plate Bone Armor deliberately. Bring 12 Solafite per piece, use the Armor Plater, and defend against the Solafite Storm.
This order is flexible. A player with early printer access can make Tech Armor sooner, while a player who spends most of the game underground may reach Bone, Creepy, and Solafite milestones in a different sequence.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Using an old name when searching
Golden Armor and Golden Bone Armor are older names. Look for Ancient Armor and Solafite Armor in current descriptions, while recognizing the older terms when reading legacy notes.
Expecting a complete recipe list with fixed quantities
Not every recipe quantity is consistently published in the available references. Use the quantities shown by your current inventory crafting screen for Leaf, Hide, Bone, and Tech instead of relying on an outdated list. The fixed Solafite figure is 12 per Bone Armor piece.
Going to a cave by copied coordinates
Verified coordinate tables are not consistently available. Use the named landmarks: the large lake and mountain for Ancient Armor, the central-western printer cave for Tech Mesh, and the golf-course or Maintenance Bunker C route for Solafite.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStarting the Armor Plater without a defense plan
The plating action triggers the Solafite Storm and mutant waves. Move healing items, weapons, and spare armor into position before starting. If you cannot defend the area, postpone the upgrade rather than losing the Bone piece and Solafite in an avoidable fight.
Confusing Ancient and Solafite roles
Ancient Armor supplies a separate resistance model and is tied to the magma-cavern gate. Solafite Armor is a plated version of Bone Armor with a 12-Solafite cost per piece. One does not replace the other’s progression function.
Assuming every value survives a patch
Armor behavior and progression requirements can change. Recheck the relevant in-game recipe, cave access, and current wiki documentation after a major update, especially before committing a large Solafite stockpile.
Final decision
For immediate survival, craft Leaf Armor. For a hunting-based supply, use Hide; for cave exploration and future upgrades, prioritize Bone; and for a renewable combat supply, skin mutants for Creepy Armor. Tech Armor is worthwhile when printer access and electronics are already secured. Retrieve Ancient Armor for its unbreakable outfit, 30% cannibal-and-mutant resistance, 70% demon resistance, and magma-gate role. When you can defend the Armor Plater and afford 12 Solafite per Bone piece, Solafite Armor is the long-term durability investment.
