FileZilla transfers the file; an associated editor performs the actual HTML editing.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The two mistakes that cause most failed edits are opening the wrong index.html and saving a local copy without uploading it. The procedure below shows how to identify the correct file, configure an editor, create a rollback copy, and verify that the new page reached the server.

What FileZilla does—and what it does not do
FileZilla Client is an FTP, FTPS, and SFTP transfer client. It displays files on your computer in the Local site pane and files on the server in the Remote site pane. It does not provide a full HTML editor inside the transfer window. When you choose View/Edit, FileZilla downloads a temporary local copy and opens that copy in the text editor associated with the file type.
Saving the document changes the local copy first. The live website changes only after the edited file is transferred back to the server. FileZilla can watch that temporary file and ask whether to upload it after a save, but you still have to accept the transfer (or upload the file manually).

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare the connection details
Get the connection information from your hosting provider before opening FileZilla. You normally need the host name, user name, password or private-key details, protocol, and—when the provider specifies one—a non-default port. The provider’s values take precedence over standard port numbers.
Choose the safest protocol available
| Protocol | Protection | Typical default port | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTP | Unencrypted data and commands | 21 | Only when the provider requires it or no encrypted option is available. |
| FTPS | TLS encryption | Provider-specified | Use when your host offers FTP with TLS. |
| SFTP | Encrypted session, including data and commands | 22 | Prefer this option when your host supports it. |
SFTP and FTPS are different protocols. Select the one your host actually issued credentials for; changing the protocol or port on your own can produce a connection failure even when the user name and password are correct.

- Open FileZilla Client.
- Start the server connection using the host, user name, password or key, protocol, and port supplied by your host.
- Wait for the connection log to finish and for the Remote site pane to populate.
If you use the wrong protocol, port, or credentials, stop and obtain the provider’s exact settings rather than repeatedly retrying random combinations. The common defaults are FTP port 21 and SFTP port 22, but a hosting account may use different values.
Find the website’s document root
The document root is the remote directory whose files are served for the domain. Its name depends on the hosting account. public_html is a common example, but it is not a universal location. Some accounts use a domain-specific folder or another name defined by the provider.

How to identify the right folder
- Read the hosting provider’s setup instructions for the domain you intend to change.
- In FileZilla’s Remote site pane, open that documented directory.
- Look for the site’s existing
index.htmland the other files that make up the same homepage, such as its referenced style sheets or image folders. - If several directories contain an
index.html, do not guess. Confirm which directory is mapped to the domain before editing.
Editing an identically named file in a backup, staging, subdomain, or old domain directory will succeed as a transfer but will not change the homepage visitors see.
Back up the current index.html
Before changing anything, download the existing remote file to a clearly named local backup, such as index.html.before-edit or a dated folder. Keep the original contents unchanged. If the revised page breaks, uploading that backup to the same remote path restores the previous version.
A backup is especially important when you are editing a live site, because a missing closing tag, a wrong file path, or an upload to the wrong directory can make the page appear broken immediately.
Configure the editor FileZilla uses
If View/Edit opens the file in a web browser, FileZilla is following your operating system’s association for HTML files. A browser can display HTML but is not a practical place to edit the source. Set a text editor instead.

Use the system default editor
- Open Edit > Settings in FileZilla.
- Choose File editing.
- Select the option that uses the system default editor.
- Apply the setting and retry View/Edit on
index.html.
Choose a specific editor
- Return to Edit > Settings > File editing.
- Select Use custom editor.
- Browse to the executable for the text or code editor you want to use.
- Save the setting, then open the remote file with View/Edit again.
FileZilla Pro also supports file-type associations. In an association command, %f represents the file path that FileZilla passes to the editor. Use the editor’s documented command-line format if you configure associations manually.
Edit index.html and upload it
Once the correct folder and editor are ready, use this sequence for each change:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In the Remote site pane, right-click the site’s
index.html. - Choose View/Edit or Edit; the exact label depends on the FileZilla version and context.
- Wait for the local copy to open in the configured text editor.
- Make the HTML change. Preserve the file name and its location unless you intentionally mean to change the site’s entry point.
- Save the document in the editor.
- Return to FileZilla or close the editor so FileZilla can detect that the temporary local file changed.
- When FileZilla asks whether to upload the modified file, approve the upload.
- Wait for the transfer queue and status area to report completion.
The prompt uploads the edited local copy to the same remote path from which it was downloaded. If you opened the wrong remote file, the transfer can complete normally while leaving the intended homepage unchanged, so verify the directory before approving the upload.
Enable automatic change detection
FileZilla’s automatic prompt depends on its file-watching option. In Edit > Settings > File editing, enable Watch locally edited files and prompt to upload modifications. With that setting active, FileZilla monitors the temporary copy created by View/Edit and prompts after the editor saves it.

The watch option does not edit the server silently: the upload confirmation still appears, and the transfer must finish before the remote file changes.
Upload manually when no prompt appears
A missing prompt does not mean the edit was lost. You can transfer the saved local file yourself:

- Set the transfer direction to Upload.
- Select the saved local

index.html. - Start the transfer and watch the queue/status area until it reports completion.
Manual Transfer is useful when file watching is disabled, the editor was closed before FileZilla noticed the save, or you edited a separately downloaded copy rather than the temporary View/Edit copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify that the live homepage changed
- Confirm the transfer queue has no pending or failed item for
index.html. - Refresh the website at the domain whose document root you edited.
- Check the page source or the browser’s developer console if the expected markup or behavior is missing.
- If the old page remains, compare the remote path and file name with the URL you opened. File names and paths are case-sensitive on many servers, so
Index.htmlandindex.htmlare not necessarily interchangeable.
Verification should be tied to the same domain and directory you confirmed earlier. A successful upload to a staging folder, a subdomain, or a different account is not a deployment to the public homepage.

Troubleshooting common failures
View/Edit opens Chrome, Edge, Safari, or another browser
Change the association under Edit > Settings > File editing. First try the system default if your operating system already associates HTML with a text editor. Otherwise select Use custom editor and browse to the editor executable. Then right-click the remote file and use View/Edit again.
Saving produces no upload prompt
Enable Watch locally edited files and prompt to upload modifications in the file-editing settings. If the prompt still does not appear, save the file to the same temporary path that FileZilla opened, return focus to FileZilla, and allow a moment for detection. You can always use Transfer > Manual Transfer to upload the saved local copy to the confirmed remote path.
The transfer completes but the homepage does not change
- Check that the upload target is the domain’s document root, not a backup, staging, or unrelated directory.
- Confirm the remote file is named exactly
index.html, including capitalization. - Make sure you refreshed the domain associated with that directory.
- Inspect page source or the browser console to determine whether the new HTML is present but references a missing asset or contains a markup error.
A hosting layout may use public_html, but that folder is only an example; follow the provider’s documented web root for your account.
FileZilla cannot connect
- Recheck the host name, user name, password or key, protocol, and port supplied by the provider.
- Use SFTP on port 22 when your provider issued SFTP access, or FTP on port 21 only when those are the instructed settings.
- Do not substitute FTP for SFTP or FTPS merely because the host name is the same; the authentication and encryption settings differ.
- Confirm that the account is authorized to access the website directory.
Standard ports are starting points, not guarantees. A provider’s custom port and protocol instructions take precedence.
The wrong file was edited
Search the remote account for the directory that actually serves the domain, then compare the surrounding files with the page you see in a browser. If you made a backup first, restore the original in the mistaken location before proceeding, so an unused directory is not left with an unintended change.
A repeatable safe-edit checklist
- Use the provider’s host, credentials, protocol, and port.
- Prefer encrypted SFTP when it is available; use FTPS when that is the provider’s TLS option.
- Open the documented document root rather than assuming
public_html. - Download a backup of the existing
index.html. - Configure a text editor under Edit > Settings > File editing.
- Open the remote file with View/Edit.
- Save the local copy, then approve the upload prompt or use Transfer > Manual Transfer.
- Wait for the queue to finish and verify the correct domain, path, and filename.
Do you need FileZilla Pro?
No. The basic workflow—connect, download or use View/Edit, edit in an external text editor, and upload—does not require the Pro edition. FileZilla Pro documentation describes the editor-watch setting, manual transfer, and file-type association features, but those concepts do not change the essential requirement: the edited file must be uploaded to the correct remote path.
