What spigot.yml is used for
spigot.yml is the main configuration file for a Spigot-based Minecraft server. Paper is built on Spigot and uses the same file, although Paper’s documented options can differ from the Spigot documentation for a particular release.

The file contains server-behavior settings such as diagnostics, watchdog timeouts, crash-restart behavior, and world-specific configuration. It is separate from bukkit.yml, even though both files are normally stored in the server’s top-level folder.
Editing the file is useful when a setting is not exposed by a graphical control panel or when you need a value that applies to one world rather than every world. It is also a low-level change: a malformed YAML structure can prevent the server from loading the configuration correctly, so make a backup and change as little as possible.

Where to find spigot.yml
Self-managed server
On a server you manage directly, look in the server root directory—the folder containing the server JAR and normally bukkit.yml. The standard location is not the plugins directory. If you cannot see the file, start the server once with the correct Spigot or Paper installation; configuration files are commonly created in the root during startup.
Hosted server panel
Game-server hosts expose the same settings in different ways. Some provide a file manager where you open spigot.yml directly. Others provide a dedicated configuration screen. For example, Shockbyte’s documented path is Config > Spigot Settings. Use the panel’s Spigot or server-configuration section rather than editing an unrelated plugin configuration.

Prepare before changing the file
- Identify the software. Confirm whether the server runs Spigot or Paper and note its version. The correct reference documentation depends on that software.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the console’s stop control or the host panel’s stop button. Do not edit while the server is writing files during shutdown.
- Back up the original. Download or copy
spigot.ymland give the backup a clear name, such asspigot.yml.before-change. Keep it until the server has started successfully and the behavior is confirmed. - Know the exact setting. Read the option’s description, type, and default in documentation matching your software. Do not copy a value from a different server version without checking it.
- Use a plain-text editor. A host panel editor is suitable. On your own machine, use an editor that does not add rich-text formatting or alter indentation.
Step-by-step: edit spigot.yml safely
- Stop Minecraft. Wait for the console to confirm that the server has shut down. If your host has separate stop and restart controls, choose stop first so the file is not being accessed while you edit it.
- Open the server root or configuration page. On a self-managed installation, open the folder containing
bukkit.yml. In a panel, open the file manager’s root or the documented Spigot settings page. - Make a backup copy. Download the current file or duplicate it in the panel. A backup gives you a known-good version to restore if the server fails to start.
- Open
spigot.ymlas text. Preserve the existing section order and indentation. YAML uses whitespace to express its structure, so do not reformat the entire file just to change one value. - Find the setting you need. Search for the option name in the editor. Read the nearby comments and compare the option with the reference for your exact Spigot or Paper version.
- Change only the value. Keep the key name and its nesting intact. Use the value type documented for that option—for example, do not replace a number with a quoted sentence or move a key to another section.
- Save the file. Confirm that the editor reports a successful save and that the filename remains exactly
spigot.yml, not a second extension such asspigot.yml.txt. - Restart from the console or panel. Start the server again only after the file is saved. A restart is the documented application method for
spigot.ymlchanges. - Check startup output. Watch the console for configuration or YAML errors. If the server starts, test the behavior affected by the option before deleting your backup.
How YAML structure affects the result
A YAML file is hierarchical: a key at one indentation level belongs to the section above it. The spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and indentation of an option therefore matter. A value placed at the wrong level may be ignored, while a broken structure can stop the file from loading.

- Keep the indentation style already used by the file.
- Change the value after the existing key instead of recreating the section elsewhere.
- Do not delete surrounding parent sections when changing a child option.
- After saving, reopen the file and verify that the edited key is still under the intended heading.
If you are unsure whether a proposed edit is valid, compare the complete section with the version shown in the matching Paper or Spigot reference. Avoid pasting a whole configuration from another release when you need only one option.
Applying settings to one world only
spigot.yml supports a world-settings section. SpigotMC community guidance describes a per-world method: add a section under world-settings named after the world’s folder, copy the default settings into that section, and change the values for that world.
The important detail is the world-folder name. A world called survival must use the folder name that the server actually loads; the in-game display name is not a substitute. Keep the world section at the same indentation level as the other world entries.

Replace the angle-bracketed tokens with a real option and values documented for your server version; do not paste the tokens into a live configuration. Copying the defaults into the world section makes the override explicit, then you can alter only the setting that should differ.

How to determine what a setting does
Paper servers

Spigot servers
For a Spigot installation, use the SpigotMC wiki entry that matches the server version. The wiki documents each setting’s type and default, which helps you distinguish a Boolean, number, text value, or nested section before editing.
Why the references should not be mixed casually
Paper’s reference can differ from the Spigot wiki because Paper may add, remove, or interpret options differently over time. Select the documentation for the software actually shown in the startup log, then compare the documented default with the value currently in your file. Option names and defaults can change between versions, so treat an old tutorial as a starting point rather than an authority.

Restarting and verifying the change
The documented workflow is save, then restart. There is no verified basis here for claiming that a live reload command applies every spigot.yml change, so plan on a full restart rather than relying on a reload.
After startup, verify three things:
- The console reaches a normal running state without YAML or configuration errors.
- The edited value is still present when you reopen
spigot.yml. - The in-game behavior or server function controlled by that value matches your intended change.
Test with a small, reversible change first. If the result is not what you expected, stop the server before making a second edit so you can compare the file and restore the backup cleanly.

When a spigot.yml change does not apply

Restoring a backup
If the server fails to start or behaves unexpectedly, stop it and replace the edited file with the backup made before the change. In a self-managed installation, rename the current file, copy the backup back to spigot.yml, and start the server. In a hosting panel, upload the backup or use the panel’s restore action, then restart.
Once the server is running normally, isolate the problem by reapplying one change at a time. Keep a dated copy of each known-good configuration so you can identify which edit introduced a failure.
