That four-step chain is the fastest dependable route from a new spawn to stone tools, smelting, cooked food, glass, and the materials needed for later equipment. The exact grids below follow the recipes documented by current third-party guides; because Minecraft recipes can change between releases, verify them in your edition’s recipe book before committing rare materials.

The crafting order that matters most
Minecraft has hundreds of craftable items, but a new survival world does not require memorizing all of them. Your early progress depends on a short dependency chain:

How Minecraft crafting grids work
Your inventory grid versus a crafting table
The personal inventory provides a 2×2 crafting area, which is enough for the crafting table itself. Once the table is placed, opening it gives you the 3×3 grid required for the pickaxes and furnace in this guide. A recipe is shaped: the ingredients must occupy the same relative positions shown in the grid, while cells marked “empty” must contain nothing.
#1 Best Overall
Read the pattern, not just the ingredient list
Two recipes can use similar materials but produce different items because their positions differ. Put the top row first, then fill the lower rows exactly. If the output does not appear, remove every ingredient and rebuild the pattern; a misplaced item is more common than a missing material.
Use the in-game recipe book as a version check
Recipe behavior is not permanently fixed across all editions and releases. The current index at CraftMC is explicitly labeled as updated to version 26.3 in 2026, which is a useful reminder to check the recipe book for the version running on your world. Java and Bedrock interfaces can also present the same recipe differently, so follow the grid shown by your client when it conflicts with an older guide.
First ten minutes: a practical build sequence
- Collect logs. Break a nearby tree and keep enough wood to convert into at least four planks plus the planks needed for your first tool components. Different wood species still produce planks usable in the table pattern.
- Convert logs to planks. Use the 2×2 inventory grid. Keep a few planks aside rather than turning every piece into components; you need four planks together for the table.
- Craft and place the table. Fill all four cells of the 2×2 grid with planks. Place the resulting table where you can reach it while mining or building a temporary shelter.
- Prepare two sticks. The wooden and stone pickaxe patterns each require two sticks. If you do not already have them, use the recipe book in your edition to show the current stick recipe.
- Make the wooden pickaxe. Put three planks across the top row of the table and two sticks directly below the center cell. This is the first tool that lets you mine stone and coal, according to DigMinecraft’s recipe guide.
- Mine cobblestone. Use the wooden pickaxe on stone until you have the eight cobblestone needed for a furnace and three more for the stone-pickaxe head. Gathering extra cobblestone now prevents a return trip when you place the furnace.
- Upgrade immediately. Replace the three planks in the pickaxe’s top row with three cobblestone, leaving the two sticks in the center column. The stone pickaxe is the tier needed to mine iron ore.
- Build the furnace. Surround the center cell of the 3×3 table with eight cobblestone. Once placed, it becomes your early processing station for ores, food, and glass.
This sequence minimizes backtracking: wood unlocks the table, the table unlocks the wooden pickaxe, the wooden pickaxe unlocks cobblestone, and cobblestone unlocks both the stone pickaxe and the furnace.
Recipe 1: Crafting table
The crafting table is the first build because it expands crafting from 2×2 to 3×3. Without it, you cannot make the pickaxes or furnace shown later.

| Plank | Plank |
- Input: four wooden planks.
- Grid: all four cells of the 2×2 inventory grid.
- Result: a crafting table.
The four-plank pattern is also shown in the 2026 Minecraft Bible beginner’s guide. Place the table before spending time collecting stone; every later recipe in this core path uses its 3×3 surface.
Recipe 2: Wooden pickaxe
The wooden pickaxe is a bridge tool, not a long-term mining solution. Its important job is allowing you to collect stone and coal so you can move to the stone tier.

- Input: three wooden planks and two sticks.
- Grid: the planks form the complete top row; the sticks occupy the center cell of the second and third rows.
- Use: mine stone and coal.
If the output is missing, check that all three planks are in the same top row and that the sticks are vertically aligned. The documented pattern is available at DigMinecraft; Sportskeeda’s pickaxe guide describes the same progression.
Recipe 3: Stone pickaxe
As soon as you have cobblestone, replace the wooden pickaxe. The stone pickaxe is the tool threshold for iron ore, making it the first upgrade that changes what resources you can reach.

| Empty | Stick | Empty |
| Empty | Stick | Empty |
- Input: three cobblestone and two sticks.
- Grid: three cobblestone across the top, with two sticks in the middle column beneath them.
- Use: mine iron ore.
Do not place the three cobblestone in a column or spread them across different rows; the recipe is shaped. If you are still holding a wooden pickaxe, you can mine more stone, but iron ore requires the stone tier according to the documented progression.
Recipe 4: Furnace
The furnace turns raw materials into useful outputs. Its documented functions include smelting ores, cooking food, and making glass.

| Cobblestone | Cobblestone | Cobblestone |
- Input: eight cobblestone.
- Grid: cobblestone fills every edge cell; the center remains empty.
- Use: smelt ores, cook food, and make glass.
The ring arrangement is described by Sweetyhigh’s crafting tips. A frequent mistake is filling the center cell, which breaks the pattern. Clear the center and verify that all eight surrounding cells contain cobblestone.
What this four-item chain unlocks
| Milestone | New capability | Why it changes your decisions |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting table | 3×3 crafting | You can make shaped tool and utility recipes that do not fit in the inventory grid. |
| Wooden pickaxe | Stone and coal mining | You can stop relying on exposed surface resources and gather cobblestone underground. |
| Stone pickaxe | Iron-ore mining | Iron becomes collectible instead of a block you must leave behind. |
| Furnace | Smelting, cooking, glassmaking | Raw ores, uncooked food, and sand can become usable materials. |
Think of the table as the platform, the pickaxes as access tools, and the furnace as the first processing machine. Building them in another order either leaves you unable to mine the required ingredient or forces unnecessary trips back to the surface.

Common failures and precise fixes
“The crafting table recipe will not appear.”
Check that you used four planks, not logs, and that every cell of the 2×2 grid is occupied. If the table still does not appear, remove the materials and reselect the plank type from the recipe book; an interface filter can hide recipes that are not currently craftable.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“My wooden pickaxe pattern is correct, but I cannot mine iron.”
The wooden pickaxe is only the first tier. Use it to gather cobblestone, then craft the stone pickaxe with three cobblestone and two sticks. Iron ore requires the stone tier in the documented progression.
“The furnace recipe is missing.”
Count the cobblestone: you need eight, not nine. Put one in each of the eight outside cells and leave the center empty. Also confirm that you opened the crafting table’s 3×3 grid rather than the inventory’s 2×2 grid.
“An older tutorial shows a different grid.”
Stop and check the recipe book for your exact release. The CraftMC recipe index is labeled as updated to 26.3 in 2026, while older pages may describe earlier versions. Do not spend scarce materials based on a screenshot whose version is unknown.

Recipes to verify before relying on them
Many guides list beds, buckets, torches, chests, swords, bows, arrows, bread, cakes, brewing stands, enchanting tables, anvils, flint and steel, ladders, and fences as early or important crafts. Exact ingredient counts and output quantities are not consistently documented in the available third-party material: one guide misstates arrow output, and other guides disagree about some tool counts. Because those discrepancies can waste resources, use your in-game recipe book or a current version-specific index before publishing or following an exact grid for any of those items.

This caution is especially important for recipes that depend on later-game materials such as iron, diamonds, obsidian, books, or blaze rods. The four core recipes above are the dependable starting point; expand beyond them only after your client confirms the pattern.
Version, edition, and source limits
Minecraft crafting is version-sensitive. The current index cited here is marked “26.3” and dated 2026, but a recipe shown in an older guide may not match a future release or a different edition interface. Treat the version label as part of every recipe, not as optional background.
No official Minecraft or Mojang recipe page was available among the cited material. The links in this guide therefore point to third-party references, and their confidence is strongest for the four core patterns rather than for the longer list of later-game items. When an in-game recipe book disagrees with a web page, follow the game client for the world you are playing.
