For routine dust, steady the assembled LEGO model and lift dust gently with a clean, soft cloth, working around delicate projections instead of dragging across them. Treat this as cautious practical advice for a built display model: LEGO’s official cleaning guidance covers hand-cleaning bricks and pieces, not a tested dusting method for assembled models.
How do you dust a LEGO model without loosening pieces?
- Place the model on a stable surface and support its base or sturdy sections as you work.
- Use a clean, soft cloth. Lightly lift dust from accessible surfaces rather than rubbing hard or pulling the cloth across small parts.
- Work around antennas, leaves, clips, minifigure accessories, and other fragile projections. Dust those areas with especially light touches, supporting the nearby structure where practical.
- Check the model as you go. If a section shifts, stop and steady or reattach it before continuing.
A soft microfiber cloth is one option, but the LEGO Group does not specifically recommend microfiber; any clean, suitably soft cloth you already have may work. Avoid forceful wiping that can catch on protruding pieces.

When should you wash instead of dust?
Use dry dusting for ordinary surface dust. If a loose brick or piece has grime that cloth dusting will not remove, hand-clean that piece separately rather than assuming an assembled model can be immersed. LEGO’s instructions are for cleaning bricks and pieces by hand, not soaking a complete model.
Hand-cleaning loose bricks and pieces
The LEGO Group’s official US care page, “Cleaning your LEGO® bricks and pieces” (publication date not stated; accessed October 7, 2026), says: “We recommend that you clean your LEGO pieces by hand using water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge.” Mild detergent may be added, and the pieces should be rinsed well with clear water afterward.

Sensitive or electronic pieces
For electronic components and other sensitive or metal-containing pieces, LEGO advises wiping with a cloth moistened with water and mild detergent without perfume or oil. This is wipe-cleaning guidance, not permission to soak those components.
What cleaning and drying methods should you avoid?
- Do not put LEGO pieces in a washing machine or dishwasher.
- Do not dry them in an oven, microwave, or with a hair dryer.
- Do not leave pieces to dry in direct sunlight.
LEGO warns that excessive heat can change the shape of bricks so they no longer work properly. The guidance does not give a drying-time estimate; allow washed loose pieces to air-dry without direct sunlight before rebuilding.
