The steps below are for PC; console players should use the game publisher’s support guidance for their specific console.
First, identify the game and what the slowdown looks like
Before changing settings, note the game’s full name and version, platform, operating system, CPU, GPU and VRAM, system memory, graphics-driver version, display resolution and refresh rate, and current graphics settings. These details help distinguish a game-specific problem from a broader PC performance issue.

Describe when the symptom occurs: continuously, in a particular location, during camera turns or combat effects, while loading, or only after a long session. Also note whether restarting the game or PC changes it. These are useful observations, not proof of a particular cause. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helped; if it did not, restore it where appropriate before testing something else.

Use the game publisher’s current requirements and support or known-issues page, rather than assuming all first-person Soulslikes behave alike. Compare your PC with both the minimum and recommended specifications. Steam cautions that meeting requirements does not guarantee high FPS or strong performance (Steam Support’s performance troubleshooting guide). Capcom likewise advises lowering settings when a system meets minimum but not recommended specifications (Capcom Support, updated July 22, 2026).

If the publisher lists a known performance issue, follow its game-specific instructions. Requirements, menu names, patches and troubleshooting steps differ by title, and a fix for one game should not be assumed to apply to another.
Reduce graphics load and background activity
Lower settings when the PC is below the recommended tier
Try a lower preset or reduce selected graphics settings, then check the same scene or action again. If the game requires a restart for settings to take effect, restart it before judging the result. Make changes individually where possible; that helps reveal which adjustment matters on your system. There is no reliable universal preset or guaranteed FPS gain for an unnamed game.

Temporarily close resource-heavy apps and overlays
As a diagnostic test, close unnecessary background programs, especially recording software and performance overlays. Capcom includes resource-heavy applications among the possible contributors to poor performance. If closing an app makes no difference, reopen it and continue isolating the issue rather than treating it as the cause.
Update software and check which GPU the game uses
Install current graphics drivers and Windows updates, then restart the PC after installing a driver. On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the game is assigned to the intended high-performance GPU; otherwise it may run on the less capable graphics processor. These are PC-specific checks, not console troubleshooting steps.

Verify game files and treat shader caches as game-specific
If files may be damaged, use the official file-verification option in the game’s storefront or the publisher’s instructions. The exact procedure depends on where the game was installed.
Do not delete or compile a shader cache as a universal fix. Capcom says damaged shader-cache files can cause some graphical issues, while Square Enix describes a separate cache-compilation behavior for a particular supported game. In that game-specific case, Square Enix estimates compilation can take 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications; that duration and its menu instructions do not apply automatically to other games (Square Enix Support). Follow cache instructions only when they come from the publisher or GPU vendor for your actual game and hardware.

Check ventilation and power without guessing at overheating
Make sure the PC has clear airflow and is not obstructed. Capcom notes that “Gameplay may not be as smooth if your PC generates too much heat,” and suggests reducing settings or limiting frame rate to reduce heat (Capcom Support). A warm case or laptop alone does not establish thermal throttling; avoid diagnosing it without measurements. On a laptop, a cooling pad is at most a conditional option if airflow or heat is actually a problem, not an established cure for stutter.
When to contact support
If the problem persists, send the publisher’s support team the details that make it reproducible. Include your system specifications, driver version, resolution and settings; the exact location and timing; what was happening in-game; and whether restarting or any individual change affected it. A short recording or screenshots may help when they show the symptom clearly. State whether the issue appears only in this game or only in a particular area, rather than describing it as a system-wide problem.
