1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf an electromagnetic brake will not release, the cause is usually somewhere in its electrical supply, rectifier, coil, or mechanical clearance—not necessarily in the brake assembly alone. Check the installed brake’s exact manual and ratings first: voltage, coil resistance, air-gap limits, and repair steps vary by model. Electrical testing and brake work can expose you to live circuits and uncontrolled machinery, so use qualified personnel and the site’s safety procedures.
How a spring-applied electromagnetic brake releases
On a common spring-applied design, energizing the coil creates a magnetic force that draws the armature away from the friction surface; interrupting power lets a spring apply the brake. Neri Motori describes this operating principle for its example brake design (Neri Motori). Do not assume every brake is built or controlled the same way: verify the installed unit’s design and instructions before diagnosing it.

Start with safety and identification
A brake is part of a machine’s load-holding and stopping system. Follow the site’s applicable electrical and machinery-safety procedures, secure the equipment and any load as required, and do not treat a hand release or a successful release test as proof that the load is safe. KEB’s COMBISTOP Type 38 manual instructs users to follow relevant safety guidelines before troubleshooting (KEB COMBISTOP Type 38 Instruction Manual).

- Obtain the current manual and wiring diagram for that exact installation. Do not borrow voltage, coil resistance, air-gap limits, or adjustment steps from another brake family.
- Decide whether the required checks are within your training and authorized work scope. Live measurements and internal repairs should be left to qualified personnel when the procedure or site rules require it.
Diagnose the cause in a safe order
1. Check the specified supply and wiring
Confirm the specified supply is present at the correct points and that wiring, connectors, and cables match the unit’s diagram. Missing or incorrect voltage, defective wiring, and cable faults are listed among the causes of a brake that will not release in INTORQ’s BFK458 troubleshooting instructions; KEB also lists incorrect voltage. These are checks, not permission to bypass a control or improvise a connection. INTORQ’s manual is for the BFK458 family and was issued in May 2012, so use it only where it matches the installed brake (INTORQ BFK458 Operating Instructions, BA 14.0168).

2. Check rectifier input and output
For a brake supplied through a rectifier, a rectifier fault can resemble a failed brake. If the exact procedure permits the measurement and the person performing it is qualified, check the rectifier’s AC input and DC output against the ratings in the brake and rectifier documentation. INTORQ directs technicians to check DC voltage; if it is zero, its troubleshooting procedure calls for checking AC voltage and the supply or wiring. It also identifies a defective rectifier as a possible cause. There is no universal AC or DC reading for all electromagnetic brakes.
Replace a rectifier only after confirming that the part is correct for the installed brake and control arrangement. If a replacement rectifier fails again, do not assume the rectifier is the only problem: INTORQ notes that a coil fault may emerge after heating and can be associated with a recurring rectifier fault.

3. Check the coil
With the equipment made safe and following the model-specific procedure, compare coil resistance with the brake’s rated value. INTORQ identifies an open or damaged winding, excessive resistance, and a short to ground as possible coil faults; its instructions call for replacing the stator in the indicated fault conditions. Resistance is model-specific, and a reading needs to be interpreted using the manufacturer’s procedure and the coil’s condition. Do not use a generic resistance figure or replace a coil based on an unverified measurement.

Excessive air gap can prevent release. KEB also lists foreign particles between the armature and lining; its troubleshooting guidance calls for adjusting the gap or replacing the lining when the maximum gap is reached. Inspect and measure only as the exact manual directs. Air-gap targets, wear limits, adjustment methods, and replacement parts depend on the brake model; do not set a generic target or force parts to move.

- Low Maintenance: Due to its simple and robust design, this power - off brake requires minimal maintenance, saving you time and costs in the long run.
5. Check model-specific switches or controls
Some versions have additional components that can affect release. INTORQ’s BFK458 troubleshooting table includes microswitch wiring or setting for applicable configurations. Check this only if the installed brake actually includes that microswitch, and use the correct wiring and adjustment instructions.
Use the right diagnostic tools—and know their limits
A digital multimeter is relevant for the voltage and resistance checks specified by INTORQ, but using one does not make energized testing safe for an unqualified person. A feeler gauge set may be needed if the exact brake procedure calls for measuring the air gap; the required range and acceptable measurement are model-dependent. Tool choice cannot replace the correct manual, safe isolation, or training.

When to stop and contact service
Stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or a trained brake technician if the cause remains unclear, the fault returns, or the procedure calls for replacing a coil, brake electronics, lining carrier, or brake assembly. SEW-EURODRIVE directs certain electronics, lining-carrier, and brake replacements to its service personnel or a trained specialist (SEW-EURODRIVE: Brake malfunctions). KEB likewise directs unresolved issues to its support. Use the brake and machine identification to confirm compatible parts and the correct service procedure rather than selecting a nominally similar replacement.
Why a brake may remain engaged
| Possible cause | What to verify |
|---|---|
| No or incorrect supply; wiring or cable fault | Specified supply and wiring diagram for the installed brake; INTORQ and KEB list these as possible causes. |
| Rectifier fault | Model-rated AC input and DC output, measured only under the prescribed safe procedure; INTORQ and KEB identify rectifier problems. |
| Open, damaged, or grounded coil | Coil resistance and fault checks against the installed brake’s rated value and instructions; INTORQ lists winding faults. |
| Excessive air gap, debris, or worn lining | Model-specified gap, cleanliness, and wear limit; KEB identifies debris and maximum-gap/lining concerns. |
| Microswitch issue on applicable versions | Whether the brake has the relevant microswitch, plus its specified wiring and setting; listed by INTORQ for applicable configurations. |
NORD’s 2013 installation-guide copy hosted by manuals.plus says the rectifier for the covered NORD equipment should be supplied from a separate source rather than inverter output because that output varies. This is a product-specific instruction from a third-party-hosted manual copy, not a rule for all brakes; confirm it against current NORD documentation and the installed control design before acting (NORD installation guide copy hosted by manuals.plus).
