Follow lane closures, merges and convoy controls
- Do not change lanes to get past queuing traffic. Where signs restrict lanes, follow them; merge in turn where that is the control shown.
- On high-speed roads, pass a works vehicle on the side indicated. Do not overtake a vehicle marked “CONVOY VEHICLE NO OVERTAKING.”
- Give extra room in narrow lanes and contraflows, where lane edges or road camber may change.
- At temporary signals, wait for green even if the red phase seems unusually long. At a convoy-controlled site, follow the escort vehicle and do not overtake it on a single carriageway.

If your vehicle breaks down in roadworks
Use the local signed safety arrangements, including a roadworks refuge if one is available, and follow the relevant breakdown guidance. Do not treat a generic roadside kit or the presence of a hard shoulder as a substitute for the site’s instructions: coned areas can contain significant hazards.

How to handle a security checkpoint
Checkpoint procedures depend on where you are and what kind of checkpoint you encounter. Stay attentive, follow posted controls and applicable lawful directions, and consult official local guidance for requirements concerning documents, searches or other obligations.
