Why a first class can feel difficult
Separation anxiety and fear of unfamiliar people are common from about 6 months to 3 years, while children are still learning that a caregiver will return. Those are broad developmental patterns, not milestones every child follows; anxiety can last longer or show up during other stressful periods. A new room or unfamiliar adults can also feel daunting even when a caregiver stays. Before the class: make the unknown more familiar
Explain what will happen
Use a few simple, upbeat details: “We’re going to a room where children sing and play, and I’ll be with you.” Describe what the child may see or do without promising they will like every moment. Keep the explanation calm and matter-of-fact rather than warning that the class might be scary. UK early-years guidance recommends preparing children for change and talking about positive aspects without setting an expectation that the event will be difficult.
Preview the place and routine if you can
Ask the provider whether you can visit briefly, see a photo of the room, or hear a simple outline of the session. Familiarization through visits, photos, and discussion is recommended in England’s school-transition guidance; applying it to a community class is a practical adaptation, not a class-specific tested protocol. The Department for Education guidance is specifically about transition into reception in England.

Practice a short separation only if the caregiver will leave
If the format involves leaving your child, try brief stays with a trusted relative or friend first, then increase the time gradually if that suits your child. UNICEF and the NHS recommend building familiarity with short separations. If the caregiver remains throughout a parent-and-child class, there is no need to rehearse being left; the new transition may simply be entering the activity together. UNICEF’s separation-anxiety guidance and the NHS guidance describe gradual practice.

- Does the caregiver stay for the whole class, or leave after settling-in?
- Can a child watch quietly before joining?
- What happens if a child cries or wants the caregiver?
- Are a familiar toy or blanket allowed, and are there safety or storage limits?
- What should you bring, and what does the session routine look like?
There is no universal group-class policy on caregiver presence or comfort items. The provider’s plan is the relevant one.

Choose a time that works for your child’s basic needs
Where possible, avoid arriving when your child is hungry, overtired, or unwell: these can make separation harder, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. HealthyChildren.org’s guidance also recommends explaining when you will return in terms the child can understand.

At arrival: follow the class format and your child’s cues
If you are staying
Move into the activity at your child’s pace. They may stay close, take your hand, or watch from the edge before exploring. Offer an invitation—“Would you like to watch the bubbles with me?”—rather than demanding that they join or greet other children. If the instructor permits, familiar play materials or parallel play beside other children can make joining less abrupt.
If you are leaving
Agree on the handoff plan with the instructor, give a warm, predictable goodbye, and then follow through. A short ritual—such as a hug and a wave—can be easier to understand than a long, uncertain departure. Tell your child when you will return in a concrete, age-appropriate way, such as “after snack,” and keep that promise. The NHS recommends a confident, positive goodbye and a familiar comfort item; the AAP recommends a consistent ritual and a clear return explanation.

Do not repeatedly slip away without telling your child, or return after leaving in a way that restarts the goodbye, unless the agreed plan calls for it. A small familiar toy or blanket may help with self-soothing, but check that it is permitted and safe in the class setting; it is optional, not a requirement.

If your child watches, clings, or cries
Watching rather than participating can be a reasonable way to warm up. Some children need longer to feel comfortable with a new person or setting. Stay calm, acknowledge the feeling, and offer gentle reassurance without pressuring the child to perform sociability. For a younger child, playing alongside peers rather than directly with them may be a natural first step. Head Start notes that some children who are slow to warm up may take longer to show ease with a new person; UK early-years guidance also recommends listening, reassurance, familiar materials, and a phased approach where needed.

If your child cries, use the instructor’s settling-in approach and the class’s caregiver policy. One difficult session is not enough to diagnose a problem or decide that the child cannot manage a group. Notice whether the child gradually settles, observes comfortably, or becomes increasingly distressed, and use those cues when deciding what to try next.
When to ask for individualized advice
Talk with a health visitor or pediatrician if the distress is intense, your child remains upset for a long time after you leave, or the difficulty continues for more than a few weeks. The NHS advises seeking help from a health visitor in these circumstances, and the AAP recommends speaking with a pediatrician if a child is not adapting. Ordinary tears during a transition are common; persistent or severe distress merits advice tailored to your child.
