Copilot in Outlook on the web can draft emails from prompts, coach a draft on tone and clarity, and let you continue working with Copilot Chat beside Outlook. Microsoft’s support pages document those capabilities, but they do not confirm a general-release upgrade that adds a new conversational in-place editing and formatting tool to the web composer. Access also depends on your account and license.
What Copilot can do in Outlook on the web
Microsoft documents three related tools for working with email: Draft with Copilot, Coaching by Copilot, and Copilot Chat. They are useful at different stages, but they should not be mistaken for one newly announced editing-and-formatting feature.

| Tool | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Draft with Copilot | Creates a full-length email from a prompt, drawing on available thread context and organizational information. | When you need a first draft. |
| Coaching by Copilot | Suggests improvements to a draft’s tone, sentiment, and clarity; you can apply suggestions. | When you have a draft and want feedback before sending. |
| Copilot Chat | Opens a chat pane beside Outlook so you can continue interacting with Copilot while working. | When you want to ask follow-up questions or work across supported Outlook information. |
Microsoft describes adjusting a draft’s tone and length, and its Draft Instructions feature can express preferences such as concise wording, bullets, and a friendly tone. These capabilities do not establish that Copilot can carry out every requested formatting or in-place editing operation in the web composer. Microsoft’s Copilot in Outlook FAQ and its Draft Instructions guidance describe the documented workflows.

How to draft an email with Copilot
- In Outlook on the web, start composing a message and select the Copilot button in the compose window.
- Choose Draft with Copilot, then describe the email you need. Include the recipient’s purpose, key facts, desired tone, and any action or deadline the message should mention.
- Review the generated draft. Correct names, dates, commitments, and any details that need to be accurate before sending.
- If the result needs work, adjust the prompt or use Coaching by Copilot to request feedback on tone, sentiment, or clarity. Apply suggestions only after checking that they preserve your meaning.
For example, a useful prompt might be: “Write a friendly, concise follow-up to the project team. Thank them for today’s review, list the two actions below as bullets, and ask for updates by Thursday.” The more important the details, the more directly you should specify them rather than assume Copilot will infer them.

How to make drafts sound more like you
In new Outlook, Microsoft’s documented path for personal draft preferences is Copilot menu > Settings > Draft Instructions. Add your preferences, enable Draft Instructions, and save. Microsoft’s example asks Copilot to keep emails short and direct, use bullets where useful, adopt a friendly tone, and sign with the sender’s first name. The option is described for new Outlook; do not assume the same settings path is available in every Outlook version.
Instructions can guide style, but they do not replace a final read-through. Check that the message sounds appropriate for its recipient and that the requested sign-off or formatting fits the situation.

Who can use Copilot Chat and what it can access
Eligibility and data access vary by account and license. Microsoft says eligible Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Copilot Chat in Outlook. For work or school accounts, the experience depends in part on whether an administrator assigned a Microsoft Copilot add-on license: without that add-on, Chat can answer questions about inbox, calendar, and meetings using limited data; with it, Chat can interact with inbox, calendar, meetings, chats, and enterprise data. Consult Microsoft’s Copilot Chat access and data guidance and your organization’s administrator for your account’s specific entitlements.
Microsoft’s Outlook FAQ also says Outlook Copilot scenarios are limited to a user’s primary mailbox, are unavailable for archive, group, shared, or delegate mailboxes, and do not work on mailboxes that are not hosted on Exchange Online. The FAQ describes Chat with Copilot as available only with a work or school account in new Outlook for Windows or Outlook on the web, while Microsoft’s newer Copilot Chat page uses broader eligible-subscriber language. These pages may describe different feature scopes or reflect documentation timing, so availability should be checked for the particular account and feature.

Drafting and coaching are different from the Frontier preview
Microsoft separately describes a Frontier preview experience for managing an Outlook mailbox. It can generate draft emails and take mailbox actions such as moving, archiving, flagging, and creating rules. That is an action-taking preview, not confirmation of a generally released conversational tool for editing and formatting text in the web composer.
The Frontier support page describes the experience as preview-only and subject to program, platform, region, and functionality limits. Its rollout and availability details can change; consult Microsoft’s current Frontier mailbox-management page for the latest status. Microsoft also notes that changes generally appear immediately in Outlook on the web, while classic Outlook may take longer to reflect them because of synchronization.

Check the message before sending
- Verify names, dates, figures, links, and promises against the original thread or source material.
- Make sure the draft does not introduce claims or commitments you did not intend.
- Review tone and clarity in context; accept coaching suggestions selectively.
- Confirm the final formatting and recipient list in Outlook itself.
Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “As with any AI generated content it’s a great tool to get started, but it’s important that you review, edit, and verify anything it creates for you.” Microsoft Support’s FAQ recommends review and verification rather than treating generated text as ready to send.
