Use OpenAI’s Microsoft Store route
OpenAI directs Windows users to download the app from the Microsoft Store. The Help Center article is a good starting point: follow its Store link rather than searching the web for a standalone installer. Microsoft recommends getting apps from trusted sources such as Microsoft Store and keeping antivirus protection current.

- Open ChatGPT from Windows after installation.
Using the Store is a safer, more trustworthy route than relying on an unrelated download site, but no download source eliminates every risk. Be cautious about unexpected installers, and keep Windows security protection up to date.

OpenAI’s Help Center lists Windows 10 (x64 and arm64), version 17763.0 or higher, as the minimum system requirement. Store availability can also depend on device compatibility and, on managed devices, organizational settings. If the app does not appear or install, check those factors before trying another download source.

Installing on a work or school computer
Access to Microsoft Store apps may be controlled by your organization. Ask your IT administrator whether ChatGPT is approved and which installation method to use; do not bypass workplace restrictions.

This is an administrator-managed option, not a workaround for individual users whose organization blocks Store downloads.

What to know after installation
With the app open, press Alt + Space to open its companion window for quick questions, file uploads, image generation, and new conversations. If another application already uses that shortcut, change it in Settings > App > Companion window hotkey.
OpenAI notes that some features available on the web and macOS may not be available in the Windows app version described in its Help Center article. App capabilities can change, so check OpenAI’s current Help Center information if you need a particular feature.
