You can stop future conversations from being used to improve models by changing a setting separately in each AI service you use. For ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Gemini, the controls differ—and opting out generally does not delete conversations already stored, undo training already completed, or stop every use needed to operate and protect the service.
Before you change a setting: what an opt-out does
A training opt-out is usually prospective: it applies to future conversations or activity as the provider describes, not necessarily to past data or models already trained. It also does not automatically prevent retention, service operation, safety review, abuse prevention, processing of feedback, or uses required by law. Check each provider’s explanation for the scope of its control.

There is no single setting established here that changes your choices across providers. Opt out separately for every service and account you use. Personal, work or school, and commercial accounts may have different terms or controls; if an organization manages your account, check with its administrator.
How to opt out in each service
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
- Open Settings > Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI also describes an alternative: submit a request through its Privacy Portal and choose “do not train on my content.” OpenAI says new conversations and tasks will not be used to train its models after you opt out. This is not a claim that existing conversations are erased or that information already incorporated into trained models is removed. Feedback may be handled separately, so consult OpenAI’s current explanation for the scope of feedback and any product-specific differences.

Claude (Anthropic)
- Open Settings > Privacy.
- Review the Model Improvement setting and switch it off. The label or exact path may vary by interface.
Anthropic’s consumer guidance says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if Model Improvement is enabled. It also describes an exception: conversations flagged for safety review may be used or analyzed to improve detection and enforcement of the Usage Policy, including training models for Anthropic’s safeguards team. Turning off Model Improvement therefore should not be read as ending every possible use. Commercial offerings have separate terms, so do not assume this consumer setting applies to them.
Microsoft Copilot (personal Microsoft account)
- In Copilot, open your profile or privacy controls.
- Find Training on conversation activity and opt out.
Microsoft’s privacy-controls guidance covers Copilot for individuals signed in with a personal Microsoft Account and gives app-specific navigation. It says opting out excludes future conversation activity from training. The page notes an updated Copilot app available from August 18, 2026; check the current support page if your app’s menus differ. This control is not a statement about every Microsoft AI product or organizational account.

Gemini Apps (Google)
- In the mobile app: open your account or profile activity controls and turn off Keep Activity.
- On the web: open Settings & help > Activity and turn off Keep Activity.
Google’s Gemini Apps Help says future chats with Keep Activity off will not be used to train its AI models unless you choose to submit feedback. It also says conversations can remain saved with your account for up to 72 hours so Google can provide the service, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. Some features or connected apps may become unavailable. Turning off Keep Activity does not control all other activity associated with your Google Account.

What to check before relying on the opt-out
- Account type: Confirm whether you are using a personal, work or school, commercial, or API account. A consumer control may not apply to managed or business accounts.
- What the control covers: Look for separate treatment of conversations, tasks, uploads, voice interactions, connected apps, and feedback. A setting’s label alone may not settle every category.
- What may continue: Review retention, safety, abuse-prevention, and service-operation explanations. Opting out of model training is not the same as preventing all processing.
- What you may lose: Disabling activity controls can affect history, connected apps, or other features, depending on the service.
- Whether the setting is still active: Recheck after an app or product update, and before sharing sensitive information. Labels and behavior can change.
