AMD Catalyst 15.7.1 is the last Catalyst package commonly associated with Windows 10. AMD lists it for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 10 and identifies display-driver version 15.20.1062. It is a historical release, not the current software for supported Radeon cards. Newer supported products use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, while older “legacy” products should use the final driver AMD lists for that model.

Before downloading anything, identify the exact Radeon GPU or APU, check whether Windows 10 is 32-bit or 64-bit, and note whether the computer is a laptop or a prebuilt desktop. Those three details determine whether you need Catalyst 15.7.1, a final legacy package, a current Adrenalin release, or an OEM-specific driver.

What “AMD Catalyst drivers for Windows 10” means now

Catalyst was AMD’s former Radeon software and driver branding. Catalyst 15.7.1, released in 2015, lists Windows 10 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility and carries display-driver version 15.20.1062. Its release notes describe Windows 10 support, WDDM 2.0 and DirectX 12 support on Graphics Core Next (GCN) products, including Radeon HD 7000 and newer GCN graphics products.

AMD later replaced Catalyst with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Supported Radeon products receive Adrenalin packages rather than new Catalyst releases. If your card is classified as legacy, AMD says no further driver updates are planned; the correct choice is the existing driver or the final package available for that product.

Check compatibility before you download

Identify the exact graphics device

  1. Press Windows key + X and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters. Record the complete Radeon model name. If Windows shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the AMD driver is missing or not currently active; look at the computer’s documentation or AMD’s detection tool to identify the hardware.
  3. If the PC has both integrated and discrete graphics, record each AMD device. A laptop may use an AMD APU for integrated graphics and a separate Radeon GPU, and the manufacturer may publish one combined package.

Check Windows architecture and build

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Under System type, note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not install a 64-bit package on 32-bit Windows.
  3. Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and record the version and build. AMD’s current Adrenalin installation guidance lists Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later. A 32-bit installation, an earlier build, or an unsupported GPU may require a final legacy package or an OEM driver instead.

Determine whether the PC is OEM hardware

For a laptop or a branded prebuilt desktop, find the manufacturer’s exact model number. AMD’s generic package can work, but AMD warns that the OEM package may be required for full support and compatibility. OEM drivers can include the manufacturer’s display switching, power-management and hotkey components.

Choose the right package

Situation Package to look for Maintenance status
Supported, current Radeon product Matching AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition package, selected by exact GPU or found with AMD Auto-Detect and Install Receives current driver releases while the product remains supported
Legacy Radeon product AMD’s final listed driver for that model; Catalyst 15.7.1 may be the relevant Windows 10 package for older GCN hardware Final release; AMD says no further updates are planned for legacy products
Laptop or prebuilt desktop with compatibility problems Graphics package from the computer manufacturer’s support page Controlled by the OEM’s support policy and hardware configuration
Windows 10 32-bit installation A package that explicitly lists 32-bit Windows 10 support, such as the historical Catalyst 15.7.1 listing where applicable Do not substitute a 64-bit Adrenalin installer
Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 or later and supported Radeon hardware Current Adrenalin package matching the GPU Use AMD’s normal update path

Download from AMD’s official support tools

Use the product selector

  1. Open AMD’s official Drivers and Support page.
  2. Select the graphics family, series and exact Radeon model. If the model is an APU, choose the processor family shown by AMD rather than guessing from the marketing name.
  3. Select the Windows 10 edition and architecture shown on your PC. Read the operating-system line on the download page before starting the download.
  4. For a supported product, choose the current AMD Software: Adrenalin package. For a legacy product, choose the final package AMD lists, even if its release date is old.
  5. Save the installer locally. Keep the downloaded file until the installation has been tested so you can reinstall it if Windows later replaces the driver.

Use Auto-Detect when the model is unclear

AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool can identify supported Radeon hardware and present the appropriate package. It is useful when Device Manager shows only a generic adapter or when the machine contains an APU whose exact model is difficult to distinguish. Auto-Detect does not make unsupported hardware current; a legacy product still needs its final listed driver.

Install or update the driver manually

  1. Close graphics-intensive programs. Save work and close games, video editors and GPU monitoring utilities. The screen may flicker or go blank briefly during installation.
  2. Run the AMD installer with administrator permission. Right-click the downloaded file and choose Run as administrator if Windows does not automatically request elevation.
  3. Read the detected hardware and operating-system information. Stop if the installer identifies a different GPU, the wrong Windows architecture, or an unsupported operating system. Download the correct package instead of forcing the installation.
  4. Keep the default components unless you have a specific reason to change them. The display driver is the essential component; the accompanying AMD software provides version information and update controls for supported products.
  5. Allow the installer to finish. Do not power off the computer while the display driver is being replaced. A temporary low-resolution display is normal during the transition.
  6. Restart Windows. A reboot loads the new kernel-mode display driver and completes any pending file replacement.
  7. Verify the result. In Device Manager, open Display adapters, right-click the Radeon device, choose Properties > Driver, and check the driver date and version. In AMD Software, open its system or update information and compare the installed version with the package you selected.

What to do when installation fails

The installer says the hardware or operating system is incompatible

Recheck the exact GPU name, Windows architecture and build. Current Adrenalin guidance requires 64-bit Windows 10 version 1809 or later. If the PC is 32-bit, uses an earlier build, or contains a legacy GPU, look for the final package that explicitly supports that combination. On a laptop or OEM desktop, switch to the manufacturer’s package; AMD specifically recommends the OEM driver when the AMD.com package causes compatibility problems.

Windows returns to a basic display driver

Open Device Manager and inspect Display adapters. A Microsoft Basic Display Adapter entry means the AMD driver is not active. Reinstall the package that matches the hardware and architecture, reboot, and verify the Driver tab again. If the device is not identified correctly, use AMD Auto-Detect or the OEM model page rather than selecting a similar Radeon model by hand.

Windows Update replaces the driver after a successful install (AMD Error 205)

AMD documents Error 205 as a case where Windows Update can revert the driver version after installation. First restart the computer, then check the installed version in Device Manager or AMD Software. If the version has changed, run the correct AMD or OEM installer again and reboot. Keep the known-good installer available. On an OEM system, use the manufacturer’s package because it is the version intended for that system’s firmware and hardware configuration.

The display works but games or applications still crash

Confirm that the installed package belongs to the exact GPU and that Windows is reporting the expected driver version. A legacy driver will not gain new fixes or features: AMD states that no further updates are planned for legacy Radeon products. If the issue began immediately after a generic AMD installation on a laptop, return to the OEM package. Also check whether the problem is application-specific rather than a driver-selection error; changing between unrelated driver branches cannot guarantee that every crash will disappear.

Is Catalyst 15.7.1 safe to use?

The package is an official AMD release and its published Windows 10 support is real, but it is a 2015 driver and should be treated as historical software. It is appropriate only when the exact Radeon hardware and Windows installation match the package’s support list, or when AMD identifies it as the final driver for that legacy product. Do not use an old Catalyst installer merely because the word “Catalyst” appears in a download title on an unverified website.

Download from AMD’s support system or, for an OEM computer, from the manufacturer’s support page. Avoid repackaged installers that bundle unrelated software. Keep Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus product enabled; a graphics driver is not a substitute for security software.

Windows 10 support ended in 2025

Microsoft says Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. The operating system continues to run, but Microsoft no longer supplies normal software updates, security fixes or technical assistance for it. AMD driver availability does not change that operating-system status. If the hardware supports a newer Windows release, moving to a supported operating system is a separate security decision; otherwise, limit expectations about future driver and application compatibility.

Final verification checklist

  • The GPU or APU model in Device Manager matches the package selection.
  • Windows is confirmed as 32-bit or 64-bit, and the build is recorded.
  • Adrenalin is used for supported products; the final listed package is used for legacy products.
  • An OEM package is tried on a laptop or prebuilt desktop when AMD’s generic installer reports a problem.
  • The PC has been restarted and the installed version checked in Device Manager or AMD Software.
  • If Windows reverted the driver, the Error 205 recovery sequence has been followed and the correct installer retained.
