scrcpy.exe is the Windows command-line program from Genymobile that mirrors and controls an Android device over USB or TCP/IP. Download it from the official Genymobile/scrcpy release, verify the archive’s SHA-256 hash, enable the Android permissions it needs, and start it from a terminal rather than double-clicking the executable.
The current Windows release documentation lists separate archives for 64-bit, 32-bit, and ARM64 PCs. The phone must run Android 5.0 (API 21) or later; audio forwarding starts with Android 11 (API 30), and camera mirroring requires Android 12 (API 31) or newer.

What scrcpy.exe does
scrcpy (pronounced “screen copy”) is Genymobile’s free, open-source desktop utility for viewing and controlling an Android device from Linux, Windows, or macOS. It carries the phone’s video—and, on supported Android versions, audio—to the computer over a USB connection or TCP/IP network connection. Keyboard and mouse input can be sent back to the phone, so the computer can act as a larger display and control surface.

It is not a conventional desktop installer with a setup wizard. The official Windows documentation describes scrcpy as a command-line application intended to be run from a terminal with command-line arguments. That design explains why opening the file by double-clicking can appear to do nothing: if the program reports an error, its terminal window may close before you can read the message.

Is scrcpy.exe safe?
Use the official project source
scrcpy itself is open source, but a file carrying its name from an unknown download site could have been modified or bundled with unwanted software. Use the Genymobile/scrcpy GitHub repository and the releases linked from that repository. The project specifically warns against downloading releases from random websites using the scrcpy name.
Verify the Windows archive
The official Windows documentation publishes a SHA-256 hash for each current Windows archive. After downloading, calculate the hash locally and compare it character-for-character with the value shown in that documentation. A mismatch means the file should not be used; download it again from the official release and check that you selected the correct architecture.

Get-FileHash .scrcpy-win64-v5.0.zip -Algorithm SHA256Replace the filename with the archive you actually downloaded. This command does not prove that a random download is trustworthy; it is useful when the expected hash comes from the official project documentation.

Windows downloads and compatibility
Choose the right archive

The filenames above are the release names documented for version 5.0. Availability and newer versions can change, so use the current release list when you download rather than assuming version 5.0 remains the newest file.
Other Windows installation routes
The Windows guide also documents installation through WinGet, Chocolatey, and Scoop. These package managers can install and update the utility without manually extracting a ZIP archive. Their package metadata and command syntax can change, so use the command shown in the current scrcpy Windows documentation for the manager you have installed. Whichever route you choose, make sure the resulting executable comes from the official package source and that Windows architecture is supported.
Requirements before the first launch
Android version
- The phone or tablet must provide at least API 21, which is Android 5.0.
- Audio forwarding is supported from API 30, Android 11.
- Camera mirroring is supported from Android 12 (API 31).
Phone settings
Normal operation requires USB debugging. Android hides that switch inside Developer Options, so enable Developer Options first, then enable USB debugging. Android presents a computer-authorization prompt the first time a device connects; unlock the phone and approve that prompt. If you reject it, scrcpy cannot establish the normal debugging connection.

A wired setup needs a USB cable that carries data, not a charge-only cable. Match the connector on the phone to the connector on the computer or its adapter. A “USB-C data cable for Android phone to computer” is the directly relevant accessory description, but wireless TCP/IP operation and OTG mode mean a cable is not required for every use case.

Set up a wired connection on Windows
- Download the official Windows archive. Select the win64, win32, or winarm64 ZIP that matches your Windows installation.
- Verify the archive. Calculate its SHA-256 value and compare it with the hash in the current official Windows documentation.
- Extract the ZIP. Extract the complete archive to a folder you can find easily. Keep the accompanying files together; do not copy only the executable to another directory.
- Enable Android debugging. On the phone, open Developer Options and turn on USB debugging.
- Connect a data cable. Plug the phone into the PC. If Android asks whether to allow USB debugging from this computer, approve it. Unlocking the phone may be necessary before the prompt appears.
- Open a terminal in the extracted folder. In File Explorer, open the folder containing
scrcpy.exe, then use the address bar or a terminal command to start PowerShell or Command Prompt in that folder. - Launch scrcpy. Run
scrcpyorscrcpy.exe. A window showing the Android screen should appear if the authorization and connection succeeded.
Starting from a terminal is preferable to double-clicking because errors remain visible. The project also includes Windows scripts for common launches; run them from the extracted folder so their messages can be read if setup fails.
Run scrcpy.exe without the window closing
Use PowerShell or Command Prompt
Open a terminal in the extracted directory and run the executable there. If no device is available, if debugging is disabled, or if a required component is missing, the terminal will display the reason instead of disappearing. Read the final lines before changing settings.
Keep the terminal open for repeated tests
Do not start by creating a desktop shortcut that launches the executable directly. First establish a working command in a terminal. Once it works, you can make a shortcut that opens a terminal and runs the command, but preserving the terminal output is still useful when a phone is disconnected or authorization expires.

scrcpy supports USB or TCP/IP transport. Wireless use sends the Android display and control traffic across the network, so the phone and computer must be reachable according to the wireless-debugging method supported by that Android version. The exact pairing and connection screens differ between Android releases; follow the project’s current wireless-debugging instructions for your version and network.

A practical first-time workflow is to make one successful USB connection, then switch to the documented TCP/IP procedure. USB is easier for initial authorization and troubleshooting. Wi-Fi avoids a cable after setup but introduces network conditions that can affect responsiveness and reliability.
OTG mode: the USB-debugging exception
OTG mode is a separate operating mode documented by the project. It does not require USB debugging. In OTG use, the computer can provide keyboard and mouse input to the Android device through a compatible USB-OTG connection, but the normal screen-mirroring workflow and its debugging authorization should not be assumed. Treat OTG as an alternative for supported control scenarios, not as a way to bypass every requirement of standard scrcpy operation.

Quality, frame rate, and latency
Genymobile describes scrcpy as capable of 30–120 frames per second, 1920×1080 or higher quality, roughly 35–70 milliseconds of latency, and about one second to show the first image. Those are project-published figures, not independent benchmark results; actual results depend on the phone, computer, connection, codec, resolution, and workload.
Reduce resolution when performance is poor
Lowering the mirrored resolution reduces the amount of video data to encode, transfer, and display. The project gives scrcpy -m1024 as an example. If the window is laggy or the computer is using excessive resources, try a lower maximum dimension before assuming the cable or phone is defective.

Choose the connection for the job
- USB: Usually the simplest route for setup and tends to avoid Wi-Fi congestion.
- TCP/IP: Removes the cable after wireless debugging is configured, but performance depends on network quality and distance.
- OTG: A special control mode that does not require USB debugging; it is not interchangeable with normal mirrored debugging sessions.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The terminal flashes and closes
Run scrcpy.exe from PowerShell or Command Prompt in its extracted folder. The terminal will show whether the issue is an absent device, denied authorization, or another startup error. Double-clicking hides that diagnostic output.
No device is detected
- Confirm USB debugging is enabled in Developer Options.
- Unlock the phone and look for the authorization prompt.
- Try a different USB port and a known data-capable cable.
- Reconnect the phone and approve the computer again if Android has forgotten or revoked authorization.
- Check that the archive architecture matches Windows and that you extracted the complete release.
The phone is listed but the screen does not appear
Close the session, reconnect the cable, unlock the phone, and run the command again from a terminal. If the problem persists, test with a lower maximum dimension such as scrcpy -m1024. Wireless sessions should be tested after confirming that a wired session works.
There is no audio
Audio forwarding requires Android 11/API 30 or later. On older Android versions, video and control can still work while audio forwarding is unavailable.

Camera mirroring requires Android 12/API 31 or newer. A device below that API level cannot gain this feature merely by changing a Windows setting.
The session is slow or unstable over Wi-Fi
Try USB to separate scrcpy from network conditions. If USB is responsive, repeat the project’s current TCP/IP setup while keeping the phone and PC on a reliable, reachable network. Lowering the resolution can also reduce the data rate.
Updating or removing scrcpy
For a ZIP installation, updating normally means downloading the newer official archive, checking its published SHA-256 hash, extracting it to a new folder, and launching that copy. Keeping the old folder until the new one works provides an easy rollback. For WinGet, Chocolatey, or Scoop installations, use the package manager’s documented update and uninstall commands, since syntax and package behavior can change.
To remove a ZIP installation, close any running session and delete the extracted folder. A package-manager installation should be removed through the same manager so its package records are cleaned up.
