Raven Bluff, a helicopter-accessible archaeological site in northwestern Alaska, preserves evidence of human activity nearly 13,000 years ago. Excavations found stone-tool debris, animal bones and what may be North America’s earliest northern fluted point. The “base camp” was a modern field camp used by archaeologists from 2009 to 2012—not an Ice Age settlement.
What Raven Bluff is—and what the base camp was
Raven Bluff lies in the Kivalina River drainage, about 100 miles north of Kotzebue, on an eroded limestone bluff between the De Long Mountains and a tundra plain leading toward the Chukchi Sea. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) says the site can be reached only by helicopter.

Because equipment and researchers had to be flown in, each excavation season required a modern support camp. BLM describes archaeologists transporting personnel and gear by helicopter to establish that camp. It supported fieldwork; it was not an ancient house, village or surviving “base camp” from the Bering Land Bridge.

The site surface contains a near-continuous scatter of stone artifacts and flakes produced during toolmaking, while additional artifacts occur in a relatively thick soil layer. These materials show human use of the bluff in the Late Pleistocene, nearly 13,000 years ago.

What archaeologists found at Raven Bluff
Stone tools and manufacturing debris
Raven Bluff’s stone remains record both finished tools and the work of making them. Flakes and other debris can indicate where people struck, shaped and repaired stone, even when complete tools are scarce. The assemblage includes a point that may be North America’s earliest northern fluted point. Fluting—removing a long channel from the base of a point—belongs to a technology central to arguments about the first peoples in North America.
The cautious wording matters: BLM identifies the artifact as what may be the earliest northern example, not as a settled proof of a continent-wide “first.” The find places eastern-Beringian technology in a wider historical and ecological context, which is also the focus of work by the University of Alaska Museum of the North, BLM and National Science Foundation-supported researchers.

Animal bones
Raven Bluff also has an unusually well-preserved assemblage of animal bones. Those remains can reveal which animals were available and which people used for food or other purposes, as well as how abundant particular resources were. The published BLM description does not provide a complete species list, so specific meals should not be assigned to Raven Bluff from the site summary alone.

What did people eat on the Bering Land Bridge?
At Raven Bluff, the strongest direct evidence for subsistence is the animal-bone assemblage. It demonstrates intensive use of animal resources but does not, in the available description, identify every species or explain the share of meat, marrow, fat or other foods in the diet.

A nearby-period comparison helps explain what daily life in eastern Beringia could involve without treating another site’s discoveries as Raven Bluff’s own. At Swan Point in central Alaska, remains from a phase dated 14,200–13,800 calibrated years before present include mammoth, horse, bison, elk, swans, geese, other birds and small mammals. That range shows how people could combine large-game hunting with birds and smaller animals when local conditions allowed.
Swan Point hearths contain burned bone, residue and soot-stained artifacts. Chemical analyses are consistent with burning bones of large ruminants and other herbivores, suggesting that fuel was scarce and usable bone supplemented available wood. This is comparative evidence for Beringian lifeways, not proof that Raven Bluff residents made the same fuel choices.

What did Beringia look like about 14,000 years ago?
The National Park Service defines Beringia as a region of more than 4 million square miles bounded by the Lena River, Mackenzie River, 72° north latitude and the tip of Kamchatka. During the Last Glacial Maximum, sea level was up to 300 feet lower than today, exposing land between Asia and North America.
That exposed region was not a narrow bridge. It was a tundra landscape more than 1,000 miles from north to south. Mammoths, mastodons, scimitar cats, Arctic camels, brown bears, moose, muskox and horses moved through it, alongside birds, fish and marine mammals. The first flooding of the land connection began around 10,000 years ago as climate warmed and sea level rose.

The landscape was also changing through time. Alaska’s Office of History and Archaeology describes a Beringian Period from about 14,500 to 13,000 calibrated years before present, when open grassland and parkland existed before forests became established. That setting helps explain why hunters could encounter large herds and diverse animal communities across broad, open country.

How climate fits migration theories
A 2018 Royal Society Open Science study reconstructed temperature and hydrology in the southern Bering Land Bridge. It associated the earliest unequivocal archaeological dispersals into Alaska with warmer, wetter conditions between 14,700 and 13,500 years ago, during the early Bølling–Allerød interstadial.
That climate correlation supplies environmental context for migration models: wetter conditions could alter vegetation, water availability and animal movements. It does not date Raven Bluff itself, establish one migration route or prove that climate alone caused dispersal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe National Park Service places the first definitive archaeological evidence for people in interior Alaska and Yukon at about 14,000 years old. Raven Bluff’s nearly-13,000-year wording therefore belongs to the later part of the region’s early archaeological record, rather than being interchangeable with the oldest evidence anywhere in Beringia.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us
- Well supported: people repeatedly used the Raven Bluff area in the Late Pleistocene; they made or repaired stone tools there; they exploited animal resources; and a rare fluted point links the site to major debates about eastern-Beringian technology.
- Still limited: the available site description does not specify Raven Bluff’s complete animal species list, exact camp layout, season of occupation, population size or the detailed preparation of meals.
- Best method: combine artifacts, manufacturing debris, bones, soil layers and environmental records, then compare sites such as Swan Point without transferring one site’s evidence to another.
Raven Bluff turns an otherwise abstract migration story into a physical place: a remote bluff where people worked stone and used animals during a period when Asia and North America were connected by a vast, cold, changing landscape. Its modern helicopter camp made the excavations possible, while the ancient materials—not the camp itself—preserve the clues to how people lived.
