The strongest match is Umbra Mortis, whose Steam listing describes a free-to-play, three-player online PvE shooter. Before installing anything, search Steam for the exact title and confirm that the official listing shows Free To Play and the expected game description. Once confirmed, install Steam, open the listing, choose its play/install control, and launch the game from your Library.
Confirm the exact game before you download
Several Steam games could fit a generic description such as “free co-op shooter.” The instructions below use Umbra Mortis because it is the strongest match currently identified, but treat that identification as provisional until you see the exact store page. A wrong match can give you the wrong player count, requirements and invite procedure.

What the Umbra Mortis listing says
The listing identifies Umbra Mortis as a free-to-play, three-player online PvE shooter. Its description says: “This game is a 3 player coop PvE shooter where you play as members of a secret organization, Umbra Mortis.” That means the central mode is cooperative player-versus-environment play for a group of three, not a competitive player-versus-player-only game.

- Search the title in the Steam client rather than relying on a similarly worded search result.
- Open the game’s official store page and verify the title, artwork and developer information match the game you intend to install.
- Look for the Free To Play designation and the play/install control. For the identified listing, Steam displays Play Umbra Mortis, Free To Play and Play Game.
- Read the current system-requirements panel before starting the download. Store pages can change as a build is updated.
If the page you find has a different title, player count or genre, stop and use that game’s own requirements and instructions instead of assuming this guide applies.

What you need before installing
Accounts and connection
- A Steam account that can sign in to the Steam client.
- A Windows PC that meets at least the listing’s minimum specifications.
- Broadband internet. The game is an online co-op title, so an internet connection is needed for the intended multiplayer session.
- At least 2 GB of available storage according to the listing. Leave additional free space for Steam’s download process and future updates.
Umbra Mortis PC requirements
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit | Windows 11, 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-8250U | Intel Core i7-12700H |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce 2070 | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 |
| DirectX | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 2 GB available space | 2 GB available space |
| Network | Broadband internet | Broadband internet |
These are the specifications displayed on the identified Steam listing, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image-quality setting. A computer that only meets the minimum may need lower graphics settings, and the requirements can change with later updates. The graphics entries are especially important: the listed NVIDIA GeForce 2070 minimum and RTX 3070 recommendation are discrete GPUs, so do not assume that any integrated graphics chip will qualify simply because the processor is fast enough.
Install Steam on your Windows PC
- Open Valve’s official Steam website and select its Install Steam link.
- Download the Windows installer and run it after the download completes.
- Accept the installer’s prompts and choose the installation location. Keep enough free space on that drive for both the Steam client and the game.
- Start Steam from the desktop or Start menu.
- Sign in with your Steam account, or create an account if you do not already have one.
Use the official Steam download route rather than an unofficial mirror. The Steam client is the normal download, update and launch path for the PC version.
Download the game from its official store page
- With Steam open, use the store search field to find the confirmed game title.
- Open the official listing. Recheck the title and the Free To Play label before proceeding.
- Select the listing’s play or install control. On the Umbra Mortis page, the controls are shown as Play Umbra Mortis and Play Game.
- When Steam asks where to install the game, select a library drive with enough available space. The listing states 2 GB, but retaining extra free space helps Steam stage downloads and updates.
- Confirm the installation. Steam will show the download in the Downloads view; wait until it reports completion.
- Open the Library tab, select the game and choose Play.
If the button says Purchase, Coming Soon or something other than the free-play control described above, you may be on a different listing or the store status may have changed. Do not assume that a similarly named result is the same game.

Start your first session
Launch and sign in
Launch from the Steam Library after the download finishes. Steam must be signed in because it supplies the account session used to start the game and connect with friends. The first launch may take longer while the game creates local settings or completes a one-time setup; allow that process to finish before closing the client.
Plan for three-player PvE
The identified listing is built around a three-player online PvE session. “PvE” means your group faces the game’s enemies and objectives rather than fighting another player team as the primary mode. The listing does not establish that solo play, a two-player mode or a larger party is supported, so organise a group of three for the mode described on the store page.
Invite friends
- Add the people you want to play with as Steam friends before launching the multiplayer flow.
- Open the game’s multiplayer, lobby or co-op option. Exact menu labels can change between builds, so follow the wording shown in your installed version.
- Create or join the lobby, then use the in-game friend invite control or the Steam overlay’s friend list if the game exposes that option.
- Confirm that all intended players appear in the lobby before starting the mission or session.
The available material confirms the three-player format but does not establish one permanent invite-button name or screen path. If you cannot find an invite control, check every multiplayer and lobby submenu, make sure each person is on the same current build, and verify that all accounts are online in Steam.

Use a controller if you prefer gamepad controls
A keyboard and mouse are not the only option. Steam documents support for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo controllers, as well as configuration for supported third-party input devices through Steam Input.
Basic setup
- Connect the controller by USB or pair it through your PC’s supported wireless connection before launching the game.
- Open Steam and select the game in your Library.
- Open the game’s controller options and enable Steam Input when the title provides that choice.
- Start the game and open its controls menu to select a layout, remap buttons or adjust sensitivity.
- Test movement, aiming, firing and menu navigation in a safe area before joining friends.
If the game ignores the pad, close and relaunch it with the controller already connected, then revisit the game’s Steam Input setting. You can also test a different supported layout or the game’s native controller option. A controller is optional; the important requirement is that your chosen input is recognised before you enter a co-op session.
Choosing a Steam-compatible PC controller
For a new purchase, look for a Steam-compatible PC gamepad that explicitly supports your preferred connection method and has the button layout you recognise. Compatibility with Steam Input is useful when a game does not expose every control directly. Confirm the device’s support on its documentation rather than assuming that every third-party pad maps identically.
What “free to play” means here
“Free To Play” on the store page means Steam allows the game to be downloaded and started without an upfront purchase price at the time of the listing snapshot. It does not, by itself, explain whether the game contains optional purchases, account restrictions or future changes. The available listing information does not establish a complete monetisation policy, so read the current store disclosures before authorising any transaction.
Do not confuse permanent free-to-play access with a limited free weekend or a temporary promotion. A promotion normally has an end date or a separate event notice; the identified listing is presented as Free To Play. Verify the current label immediately before installation because store status can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInterpreting the current Steam review snapshot
The listing snapshot accessed in 2026 displayed 83% positive ratings from 67 user reviews. That is a small, time-sensitive sample, not a performance test or a guarantee that your experience will match other players’ experiences. Steam’s displayed percentage can move as new reviews arrive, so treat it as a current snapshot rather than a permanent score.

Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
The game is not the one you expected
Return to the store search and verify the exact title, the Free To Play label and the three-player PvE description. The generic phrase in the title is not unique, so a search result with a similar name can lead to a different game.
The install control is missing
Check that Steam is signed in and that you are viewing the official PC listing rather than a soundtrack, demo or community page. If the page shows a purchase control or a different availability message, read the current listing status before continuing.
The download will not start
- Confirm that the selected library drive has more free space than the stated 2 GB requirement.
- Check that your broadband connection is active and that Steam is not paused in its Downloads view.
- Restart Steam and try the install again from the Library or store page.
The PC does not meet the requirements
Compare your system with every row in the requirements table, not just the processor and RAM. The listed minimum includes Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 12 and an NVIDIA GeForce 2070. If your graphics hardware is below that specification, installation may still be offered by Steam, but the listing does not promise that the game will run acceptably.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Friends cannot join
Make sure every player has completed the installation, is signed in to Steam and is running the same current build. Reopen the game’s multiplayer or lobby screen and send the invite from the control exposed by that build. Because the exact interface is not fixed in the available listing information, use the labels shown on your screen rather than following a button name from an older guide.
The controller is not detected
Reconnect the controller before launching, then review the game’s Steam Input and in-game control settings. Try one input mode at a time so you can tell whether the game is using native support or Steam’s remapping layer.
A practical first-session checklist
- Confirm the exact game title and official Steam listing.
- Verify the Free To Play label and current requirements.
- Check Windows version, 64-bit support, processor, RAM, graphics card, DirectX 12 and available storage.
- Install Steam from Valve’s official page and sign in.
- Install the game into a Steam library with spare space.
- Launch once from the Library before inviting friends.
- Add your teammates as Steam friends and open the game’s multiplayer or lobby flow.
- Use a three-player group for the co-op format identified on the Umbra Mortis listing.
- Connect and configure a controller before launch if you prefer gamepad controls.
Following those checks gives you the correct download route, a realistic hardware baseline and a reliable way to assemble the intended co-op group without mistaking another similarly described Steam game for the one you wanted.
