Insert the card, connect the console to the internet, follow the HOME Menu download prompt, and wait for the game data to install in system memory or on a compatible microSD Express card. You need Switch 2 system software version 20.1.1 or later, enough free storage, and the card inserted whenever you start the game. Internet is required for the download and first launch, but Nintendo says later launches can work offline while the matching card remains inserted.
What a Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card actually does
A game-key card looks like a conventional physical game card, but its role is different. Nintendo describes it as a key for downloading the complete game over the internet rather than as storage containing the complete game itself. The card authorizes the Switch 2 to obtain the software, while the game files are saved in the console’s system memory or on compatible expansion storage.

That distinction affects setup and everyday use:
- You must download the game before you can play it.
- The download consumes the amount of storage printed on the game’s package.
- The console must be online for the download and for the game’s first launch.
- The physical card must stay inserted when you launch the game, including after the download is complete.
- After the first launch, Nintendo says the game can be started without an internet connection as long as the card is present.
In other words, the card is physical ownership and launch authorization, not a self-contained copy of the game. Removing it does not remove the installed files, but the software will not have the physical key it needs to start.
Requirements before you begin
Check these items before inserting the card. Resolving them first avoids a stalled download or a first-launch error.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| System software | The Switch 2 is running version 20.1.1 or higher. | Nintendo specifies this minimum system version for game-key-card software. |
| Internet connection | Connect the console to a reliable Wi-Fi or other supported internet connection. | The game data must be downloaded, and the first launch requires an internet connection. |
| Free storage | Read the required-space figure on the game’s package and compare it with available system memory. | The card does not hold the full game, so the complete download must fit on the console or expansion storage. |
| Expansion storage, if needed | Use a Nintendo Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card when internal storage is insufficient. | Nintendo identifies microSD Express as the expansion-storage type for this use. |
| Physical card | Have the matching game-key card available and keep it inserted after installation. | The card is required to authorize launching the software. |
Nintendo also states that a Nintendo Account is not required to download the game data. The documented download prerequisites are the console software version, internet connection, available storage, and the game-key card.
How to download a Switch 2 game-key card
-
Update the console to version 20.1.1 or later
Open the Switch 2’s system settings and check the system software version before starting. If the version is below 20.1.1, update the console while it is connected to the internet, then restart or complete any update steps the system requests. A game-key-card title may not install or play correctly on an earlier version.
-
Check the game’s required storage
Look at the game-key card package for the title’s required free space. Compare that figure with the free space shown in the console’s storage settings. If the internal memory is short, install a compatible microSD Express card before beginning the download. Leave additional room for system data and future updates rather than planning to fill the medium to its exact printed requirement.

Start the download from the HOME Menu
Follow the instructions shown on the HOME Menu. The console will use the card as authorization and begin downloading the complete game from Nintendo’s service. Keep the console connected to the internet and avoid removing the card while the download is in progress.
-
Wait for the installation to finish
Let the download reach completion before launching the title. The time depends on the game’s size and your connection speed; Nintendo’s requirement is that the data be fully downloaded to system memory or compatible microSD Express storage.
-
Launch the installed game while online
Start the software after installation while the console still has an internet connection. This first launch performs the required online authorization. If the game asks for the card, confirm that the matching card is fully inserted.

Keep the card inserted for future play
Once the first launch is complete, leave the game-key card in the card slot whenever you start the title. The installed data remains on the console or microSD Express card, but the physical card continues to function as the key that authorizes access.

Do you need internet to play a game-key card?
You need internet at two specific points: while downloading the game data and when launching the game for the first time. Nintendo’s support guidance says that an internet connection is only required for that first launch; after it has completed, the game can be started without an internet connection.
For an offline session after setup, leave the matching game-key card inserted, start the title from the HOME Menu, and use the console normally. Offline play is not the same as skipping installation: the entire download must already be present, and the initial online launch must have succeeded. If the console reports that an online check is required, reconnect it to the internet and complete the first launch before trying offline play again.
Where the game files are stored
The game-key card itself is not the storage location for the complete title. The downloaded files go to one of two places:
- System memory: Use the Switch 2’s built-in storage when it has enough free space.
- microSD Express storage: Use a compatible card when the game’s package requirement exceeds available internal space or when you want to reserve internal memory for other software.
Use the package’s required-space figure for the specific title rather than estimating from the card’s physical size. Two game-key cards can require very different amounts of storage, and the printed requirement is the relevant planning number for that release.

Choosing expansion storage for Switch 2
Nintendo names microSD Express as the expansion-storage format for game-key-card downloads. Choose a card identified as compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 and select its capacity based on the title’s required space and the other software you plan to install.
SanDisk’s datasheet for a microSD Express card officially licensed for Nintendo Switch 2 lists read speeds of up to 880 MB/s and write speeds of up to 650 MB/s. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results, and actual performance can vary with the console, card capacity, workload, and other conditions. The speed rating does not change the game’s required storage amount: use the package figure first, then choose a capacity that leaves practical headroom.
| Decision | Practical approach |
|---|---|
| Only one small title | Check whether the game’s printed requirement fits comfortably in free system memory. |
| Large title or several downloads | Install a compatible microSD Express card with capacity beyond the immediate requirement. |
| Replacing an existing card | Confirm that the replacement is microSD Express and identified for Switch 2 compatibility before moving or redownloading software. |
| Comparing speed claims | Treat figures such as up to 880 MB/s read and 650 MB/s write as the manufacturer’s maximum specifications, not guaranteed console performance. |
Troubleshooting a missing download prompt
The game-key card is inserted but no download instructions appear
- Remove the card and reinsert it firmly in the correct orientation.
- Return to the HOME Menu and look for the title or an instruction associated with the inserted card.
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet.
- Check that system software is version 20.1.1 or higher.
- Verify that sufficient storage is available for the package’s required-space figure.
These checks cover Nintendo’s documented prerequisites. If the title still does not appear after they are satisfied, power the console off and on, then insert the card again and follow the HOME Menu instructions.
The download stops because there is not enough space
Read the required-space number on the package again and compare it with the console’s free space. Delete or archive other software only if you are sure you can redownload it later, or install a compatible microSD Express card and retry. The game-key card cannot be used as a substitute for storage because it does not contain the full game.

The internet connection drops during download
Reconnect the Switch 2 to the internet and return to the HOME Menu. Check the title’s download status and resume or restart the download as the console presents the option. Keep the card inserted until the installation is complete.
The first launch fails while offline
Connect the console to the internet and start the game with the matching card inserted. The first launch requires an online connection even though later launches can be offline. Complete that first authorization before disconnecting again.
The game asks for the card after installation
This is expected behavior for the format. The downloaded files are on system memory or microSD Express storage, but the physical game-key card remains the launch key. Insert the same card before starting the title.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The console has an older system version
Update to version 20.1.1 or later, then retry the installation. The minimum version is a requirement for game-key-card software, not an optional enhancement.
What happens if you remove or replace the card?
Removing the card does not turn the installation into a standalone digital purchase. The files may remain on the console, but the title still needs its matching physical key card to launch. Reinsert the same card to regain access.
Because the card is tied to the title it authorizes, another game-key card cannot serve as a substitute. If you move the installed data to different compatible storage, the launch requirement remains unchanged: the matching card must be inserted when the game starts.
Account and privacy details
Nintendo states that a Nintendo Account is not required to download the game data. The essential setup path is therefore based on the console’s system version, an internet connection, available storage, and the physical card. Do not confuse the absence of an account requirement for the download with requirements that a particular title might separately impose for online features; the game-key-card installation guidance only establishes that the download itself does not require a Nintendo Account.
