To install custom content (CC) in The Sims 4, download the creator’s files, extract any ZIP or RAR archive, place the CC files in your user-folder’s Mods directory, enable mods in the game, and restart. EA’s instructions cover PC and Mac; mods are not available on PlayStation or Xbox.
What counts as CC, and where can you use it?
EA uses “mods” as the broad term for player-created content. Custom content is usually an addition such as hair, clothing, or furniture; gameplay mods can change how the game works. A normal CC download is not necessarily a script mod.

The official installation workflow is for PC and Mac. EA says mods are unavailable on PlayStation and Xbox. EA’s guide to mods and custom content also explains that EA and Maxis do not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific third-party mods or CC. Choose a creator or download source you trust, and read the creator’s installation and compatibility notes.

Download and install CC on PC or Mac
- Choose the content and read its instructions. Check the creator’s notes for required files, supported game versions, and any special installation steps.
- Download the file. If it arrives as a ZIP or RAR archive, extract it with your computer’s archive utility before installing. Do not place an unopened archive in the game folder.
- Check the file type and destination. Ordinary CC package files belong in the
Modsfolder. Lots, rooms, and Sims may include files meant forTrayinstead; follow the creator’s instructions rather than putting every download in Mods. - Open your user-data folder. The usual path is
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. Use the Documents location configured on your computer; the target is your user folder, not the game’s installation directory. IfModsis missing, EA says you can create it. - Move the extracted CC file into Mods. Keep files organized in a way that makes them easy to identify if you need to remove or update them. For script mods specifically, EA Forums community guidance says they should be no more than one folder deep inside Mods; this is supplemental forum guidance, not a substitute for the creator’s instructions.
- Enable CC in the game and restart. Launch The Sims 4, select
Game Options > Other, checkEnable Custom Content and Mods, apply the change if prompted, and relaunch the game.
For a lot, room, or Sim, use the creator’s file-placement instructions to determine whether the included files go in Tray. CurseForge also publishes a manual Sims 4 installation guide; it is an installation reference, not an endorsement of every download hosted elsewhere.

Why CC may not appear
- The archive was not extracted. Extract ZIP or RAR files and place the resulting content files in the correct folder.
- The file is in the wrong folder. Package CC generally belongs in
Mods; files for lots, rooms, and Sims may belong inTray. The Sims Resource’s placement guide covers the distinction. - CC is disabled in game options. Check
Game Options > OtherforEnable Custom Content and Mods, then restart the game. - A game update affected compatibility or settings. Updates may disable mods. Check the creator’s latest compatibility guidance and re-enable the option if needed. EA advises exiting without saving if the game says CC or mods were disabled: saving first may remove that content from the save. Correct the setting, relaunch, and check the content before saving.
EA’s post-update guidance is available in its instructions for mods disabled after an update.
