The Ken Burns effect is a slow pan, zoom, or combination of both across a still image. It creates the impression of camera movement and can guide attention to a detail or reveal more of the photograph over time.
How the Ken Burns effect works
An editor changes the image’s framing as it plays. For example, a move can begin tightly framed on one person and gradually pull back to reveal someone else in the same photograph. The image itself remains still; what changes is the portion shown on screen and its scale.

The movement can be a pan, a zoom, or both. It does not require live-action footage, and it does not create real depth. The Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) defines the technique as displaying still photographs in motion pictures or animated slideshows with slow panning and zooming. FADGI’s glossary definition includes the example of pulling back from one person to reveal another.
Why it is called the Ken Burns effect
The name is associated with documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, whose treatment of still photographs to convey history became known by that label. Burns described approaching a photograph like a master shot, considering different framings and movements to bring past moments to life.

In a PBS program transcript, Burns said: “I could take a photograph and treat it like a master shot with a long, a medium, a close, a tilt, a pan, which is a different way of saying, how do you wake up these past moments?” The phrase captures the creative purpose: movement can lead the viewer through the image, rather than simply decorate it.
What the effect looks like in an editing program
The exact interface varies by application. In Final Cut Pro, Apple describes the effect as a crop with one setting at the clip’s beginning and another at its end. The editor adjusts the size and position of each frame, which sets the movement across the image. Apple says the default motion smooths the start and finish; users can choose other easing options or linear movement.

Apple’s Final Cut Pro guide documents that implementation. It is one software example, not a universal set of labels or controls for every editor.

A strong zoom depends on having enough image detail. If an editor zooms far into a low-resolution photograph, the enlarged area may look soft or lose clarity. FADGI recommends using a high-resolution source still when the move needs to preserve detail, such as a face. The right framing also depends on the purpose of the move: a shift should direct attention or reveal meaningful context, not obscure the image’s subject.

When a pan or zoom helps
- To focus attention: move toward a person, object, or detail the viewer should notice.
- To reveal context: start close and widen the frame to show relationships or additional information in the photograph.
- To preserve stillness: leave the image static when motion would distract or does not serve the moment.
The technique is a framing choice, not an automatic improvement. Whether it suits a slideshow or film depends on the image, the intended point of attention, and the pace and tone of the surrounding material.
