To download an update for software installed from a regular Nintendo Switch 2 game card, connect the console to the internet, highlight the game on the HOME Menu, press + or −, then choose Software Update → Via the Internet. Let the download and installation finish before you go offline. The update applies to the installed software—not to the game card itself.
Download the update while you’re online
- Connect your Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game’s software icon. Do not launch it.
- Press + or − on the controller.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete before disconnecting or leaving internet access.
Nintendo Support says the console will prompt you to download an available software update when you start a game or application while connected online. You can also enable automatic software updates, but those require an internet connection too. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 software-update instructions.

Can you update the game without internet?
Nintendo provides a local wireless option called Match Version with Local Users. It does not need an internet connection for the local transfer, but you need another nearby console with a compatible version of the same software available. Both consoles must have the latest system update installed; participants select the same software icon, join a local group, and the group creator starts the session. The process matches participating software to the most recent version available in that group. It does not download update data from Nintendo’s servers.

Regular game cards and game-key cards are different
A regular game card is not the same as a Switch 2 game-key card. Nintendo says a game-key card does not contain the full game: you must download the game data over the internet, and internet access is required for the first launch. Later launches can be made offline with the game-key card inserted. That full-game download requirement is separate from downloading an update for software already installed from a regular game card. If the console reports insufficient space, Nintendo identifies system memory and a microSD Express card as possible storage locations for game-key-card download data. A card is optional, not a standard requirement for the update steps above; consider extra storage only if free space is actually insufficient. Switch 2 requires the microSD Express format, so check a card’s stated compatibility and capacity before buying. What to check before going offline
- Confirm the update download and installation have finished.
- Start the game once while connected if you want to confirm it opens with the updated software.
- Do not assume every title will work fully offline: online multiplayer, cloud services, first-launch checks, or other title-specific requirements can still need a connection.
