Before you leave, download and update the games you want, load their virtual game cards onto the console you’re taking, and test each title with Wi-Fi off. Game-key cards need a download and first online launch; cloud-version games require internet.
Prepare your games before you leave
- Connect to dependable Wi-Fi. Install any available system update and update the games you plan to play. Download the games, DLC, and other content you need. Nintendo’s System Settings overview covers internet, Airplane Mode, and data management.
- Load digital games onto the travel console. Nintendo says a digital game or DLC can be played offline when its virtual game card is loaded on that console. Arrange this before departure: swapping virtual game cards between linked consoles requires an internet connection. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide.
- Prepare game-key cards separately. A game-key card does not contain the full game. Download its game data and launch it once while online before the trip. After that, the game can start offline, but the game-key card must remain inserted. Nintendo explains the requirements in its Game-Key Card Overview.
- Test each game offline. On the console you’ll take, turn off Wi-Fi or enable Airplane Mode, then launch each intended game. This is a practical check, not a guarantee for every mode: a game may require internet for a service, membership check, or online feature. Check the game publisher’s requirements if a particular title matters for the trip.
Know which game types work offline
| Game or feature | What to do before travel | Offline expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Digital game with its virtual game card loaded | Load the card onto the travel console and download the game. | Nintendo says it can be played offline, though specific game features may still need internet. |
| Digital game using Online License without a loaded virtual game card | Do not rely on this setup for an offline trip. | Online License play requires the console to be connected to the internet. Details are in Nintendo’s Online License instructions. |
| Regular physical game card | Insert it and install any available updates or DLC you want. | The card is distinct from a game-key card, but requirements vary by title and feature. Test the game offline. |
| Game-key card | Download the game and complete its first launch online; bring the card. | Can start offline after first launch, with the card inserted. |
| Cloud-version game | No offline preparation makes the streamed game playable without a connection. | Requires a stable, high-speed internet connection to stream. See Nintendo’s Cloud Versions of Games FAQ. |
| Save Data Cloud | Back up or retrieve cloud saves while connected and with the required Nintendo Switch Online membership. | Cloud backup is not a way to play a cloud-version game offline. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ covers save data. |
Turn on Airplane Mode
Airplane Mode can be enabled in handheld or tabletop mode, but not in TV mode. Nintendo’s Airplane Mode instructions give two paths:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Airplane Mode and turn it on.
- Or hold the HOME Button for at least one second to open Quick Settings, then toggle Airplane Mode.
Airplane Mode turns off wireless communications by default, but you can switch Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or NFC back on individually. If you plan to detach Joy-Con 2 while Airplane Mode is active, turn Bluetooth on while the controllers are still attached.
Check storage and transfer timing
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards, up to 2 TB; the card is sold separately. It can store downloaded software, updates, and DLC, but not game save data, which remains in system memory. A system update over the internet is required the first time you use a microSD Express card, so set it up before travel. Nintendo says the console has 256 GB of storage, with some reserved for system use, and that no individual Switch 2 games currently require an extra card to play. See the compatibility information and microSD Express FAQ.

Buy extra storage only if the downloads you want to carry need more room. A standard microSD card used with an older Switch is not a substitute for microSD Express storage for Switch 2 software, and an Express card does not back up saves.
If you’re moving to a new console, complete the transfer and download the games onto the target console before leaving. Nintendo’s transfer guide says a system transfer and subsequent software downloads require an active internet connection; a completed transfer alone does not make the new console ready for offline play.
