The method depends on where the GIF came from. If someone posted it as a file in a message, you save that file from the message. If you chose it from Discord’s built-in GIF picker, you are not downloading a file at all: you are sending one of Discord’s search results. Favoriting a GIF in Discord is a shortcut for finding it again inside the app. It does not create a copy on your device.
Step one: identify what kind of GIF you are looking at
Before you try to save anything, check how the GIF reached the chat. The steps differ for each case.

- Uploaded attachment: someone sent a GIF file to the channel or conversation. It appears as an image in the message, and you can open it at full size.
- GIF picker result: the GIF was chosen from Discord’s GIF tab and sent from Discord’s search. There is no file uploaded by the sender in the usual sense.
- Pasted link: the sender pasted a GIF or image URL into chat, and Discord displayed it as a link preview. The file is hosted on another website, so any save happens from that site.
Saving a GIF file someone uploaded
Discord’s help article “How do I upload images and GIFs?” (updated June 11, 2026) explains how GIFs are uploaded and shared. It does not describe a save gesture for each Discord app. The steps below rely on ordinary browser and operating-system behavior. Menu labels vary by browser, operating system and Discord version, so treat the labels as examples.

- Click the GIF in the message to open it at full size.
- In a browser, right-click the image and choose the save option, which is often labeled “Save image as…”.
- In the Discord desktop app, look for a download option on the attachment. If the app offers none, open the attachment in a browser and use the browser’s save command there.
- Open the saved file in a browser or an image viewer and confirm it moves. Discord’s help articles do not explain why a saved GIF might appear as a still image, so if it does, compare it with the full-size view in the message before assuming the file is wrong.
Saving a GIF from the GIF picker
Discord’s “Sending GIFs on Discord” article (updated June 29, 2026) covers searching for and sending GIFs. Its steps end when the GIF is sent. Discord does not document a method for saving a picker GIF to your device, nor does it promise that a picker GIF keeps its animation or original format.

Desktop and browser
Click the GIF icon next to the emoji picker to open the GIF categories and search. To add a GIF to your favorites, click the gold star on it. Favorites appear in a Favorites category inside the picker, so you can send them again later. Favorites are available only in the desktop and browser clients.
Android and iOS
Tap the chat or message field, tap the emoji icon, then open the GIF tab, search, and select a GIF. Discord’s mobile guidance states that favorites are not currently supported in the mobile app.

If you need the GIF file itself
Picker results are not documented as downloadable files. If you need a local copy, ask the person who sent it to upload it as a file, or look for the original on the site the GIF came from. Use the original source only if you have the right to save and reuse the file.
Saving GIFs and images on a phone
Discord’s “File Attachments FAQ” (surfaced in September 2026) explains a setting called Save to Device, found in Chat settings. It applies to images and videos that you send directly from your phone, which the FAQ says are saved to the phone automatically. The FAQ does not say the setting saves GIFs that other people send you. Do not rely on it as a way to download received GIFs.

Finding attachment links in your data package
Discord’s “Your Discord Data Package” article (updated September 25, 2026) describes a ZIP file containing your account data. Message records in that package can include CDN links for images or files included in your messages. You can request the package from Data & Privacy settings in the desktop or browser app, or in the mobile app.
This can help you locate the link to an attachment from your own message history. The article does not describe the package as an export of GIF-picker favorites, and it is not a one-click GIF downloader.

Why some uploads open as downloads instead of inline
The “File Attachments FAQ” lists 20 MB as the free upload limit as of August 2026. Images larger than 20 MB that are uploaded directly are shared as downloads rather than displayed inline. This changes how a file appears in chat. It is not a general limit on downloading files.

Troubleshooting
- You want to find a GIF again inside Discord: use favorites on desktop or browser. This is not a download.
- You want a local animated file: confirm whether the message holds an uploaded attachment or a picker result. Only an uploaded attachment has a documented source you can save from.
- The saved file is a still image: Discord’s official articles do not establish the cause, so do not assume a specific bug or fix.
- You are tempted to install a third-party download tool or browser extension: the basic workflow above does not need one. Tools of this kind are outside what Discord documents, and their security is not something this guide can vouch for.
- The menus look different: Discord and browser interfaces change. Check the current labels in your version.
